Turkeygirl
Hey, any of you NYer's a licensed guide in NY state or know of someone who is. I've been trying to decide on what my career is going to be. Was researching on the internet today and found out I could get licensed as a guide in NY State! Of course I'd have to get a doctor's signature, cpr/first aid certifications, and pass the exam, but it is really something to think about. Maybe if I could get some more hunting/fishing knowledge, I'd be ready. I dunno...any one have any advice/thoughts?
hunterfisherman
Re: NYS Outdoor Guide?? I've read many of your post and I think you would be a good guide and you certainly love the outdoors. I'm sure there is an agency in NY that regulates outfitters. Try to find them and ask them some questions about good ones. You can learn some of those other skills on the fly or before hand. There are also several guide schools also
popgun
Re: NYS Outdoor Guide?? You might try contacting some of the licensed outfitters in NY and see if they need a helper/guide apprentice. At least that would get your foot in the door. Have you looked into any of these places? Nicrum Outdoors - East Concord, NY - Guide, Outfitter, Lodge Endless Hills Guide Service - Winfield, NY - Guide, Outfitter, Lodge HWC Guide Service - Roosevelt, NY - Guide, Outfitter Hidden Valley Vacation Adventures - West Winfield, NY - Guide, Outfitter, Lodge Woods and Water Guide Service - Knox, NY - Guide, Outfitter Adirondack Mtn & Stream - Omstedville, NY Guide, Lodge, Outfitter, Taxidermy Services The biggest problem around here, and a lot further south of here, is that the guides get paid in tips. This can be good some weekends and very poor other weekends. I hope you can find something in your field because I think you would be good at it, but most of the jobs I noticed on the Internet that required a degree in Outdoor Education, also wanted teaching certification. It's not too late to use the time you are working custodial to get teacher certified. This reply makes me feel a little guilty because I kid around with you sometimes about your trips and falls, but today I sorta feel like I'm talking to one of my own kids that has just informed me that they want to become a "starving artist" after receiving their BS Degree in Outdoor Education. I wish you the very best, and I think you are better than a "tip worker". ....popgun
