Re: Colorado Mountain Goat (with Pics)

Nice billy in some serious country. I have a hard time elk and deer hunting in the 10-12,000 foot elevation range. Brings back memorys of my sheep hunts. Talk about breathing pure fire 14k feet is seriously high. Congrats again on a great billy. With the availablity of tags that is truely a once in a life time hunt.

Re: Colorado Mountain Goat (with Pics)

This is my buddy. He finally drew a tag after 13 years of trying. It was for unit G13----the same unit I hunted in 2000. Fact is, I got out my maps & showed Ed where I got my billy-----it was on Iowa Peak---13900'. Ed got his on Mt. Huron, 14003' peak, which is right next to Iowa. He got the billy just below the summit---He had scouted a billy Labor Day weekend, the season started the Tuesday after Labor Day & Ed started his climb @ 3AM. Most 14000'peaks have a hiking trail up to the summit----we Coloradoians like to summit the 14ers. Anyway, Ed saw the goats on his climb up. He saw where the goats got on a ledge & bedded. He got within 50 yards of the bedded goats----that's the photo of the one laying down. There were 4 goats----2 big & 2 smaller ones. He was thinking that they were nannys & a couple of kids. But he watched them for a good 30 minutes taking pictures & enjoying the morning----he was going to pass on them because he wanted a billy. It's really hard to tell the difference between a billy & nanny--most tell by watching them urinate. Anyway a couple hikers were starting to climb up the switchbacks & he could hear voices. So did the goats---when they heard the voices-- up out of their beds they came. Ed could see the sac hanging down but before he could shoot the goats were off the ledge & headed around the mtn. Ed sat there for awhile & let things settle down. Then he went off after them. If you know anything about goats the like cliffs-----he went around the ledge & saw the 2 goats bedded on a sheer rock ledge. He crawled to within 40 yards of the goat-----the goat was facing away from him. I had told to anchor the goat because they WILL jump off a cliff face when shot. He got a rest & shot the billy in the neck---he never moved an inch out of his bed. Ed said the cliff was a good 400' straight down.

He billy had 8 1/2" horns-----5 1/2" bases. He plans on doing a full body mount----he was starting to get it's winter hair---he has a good set of pantaloons.

This is in the collegiate peaks--near Buena Vista & Leadville.

It's on the otherside of the continental divide from where the Realtree Elk hunt is going to take place. If you went up & over the CD----you would come out close to Talyor Reservior.
