Arctic Cat recalls 50,500 snowmobiles due to steering problem

Associated Press

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn.

- Arctic Cat Inc. said Tuesday it's recalling 50,500 snowmobiles because of potential steering-control problems.

The company said it has received 42 reports from riders who lost control on certain 2002-2006 models made between May 2001 and April 2006 and sold worldwide. No injuries have been reported, the company said, but it advised owners not to ride the machines until they've taken them to a dealer for free repairs.

Arctic Cat said the steering shaft on certain snowmobiles can fail at the steering shaft/steering arm attachment.

"This could cause a loss of steering control of the vehicle, and result in injury or death," the company said.

It was the second snowmobile recall for the Thief River Falls-based manufacturer this year. Last April, Arctic Cat recalled 52,000 snowmobiles because of fuel tanks that could crack and leak. No injuries were reported from that problem either, but owners filed 217 warranty claims.

Tuesday's recall include the following models:

_All 2002 440 Sno Pro Models.

_All 2003 Firecat 500/600/700, Firecat 700 Snow Pro, and 440 Sno Pro models.

_All 2004 Firecat 500/600/700 (STD and Sno Pro), and Sabercat 500/600/700 models.

_All 2005 Firecat 500/600/700 (STD and Sno Pro), M5, M6, M7, and Sabercat 500/600/700 models.

_All 2006 Crossfire 600/700, Firecat 500/600/700, Firecat 700 Sno Pro, Sabercat 500/600/700, and all M-Series models.
