Guest Dust
Okay so I know most of you won't read this and most don't care but I have to have an outlet. I convinced my wife to go back and get her masters degree and yes I will admit there were some self motivating factors for me. So anyway she does and has been done now for about 6 months with degree in tote. So I get her financial aide statement and I about fell out of the dang chair. 1 1/2 semesters 10,000 grand. Good god no wonder kids can't afford to go to school. The best part is they put us on a payment plan. 87 dollars for 20 years. My lands what is happening now days. Her entire bachelors did not cost that much. What is sad is I don't have a degree. My salary is triple hers. It is freakin sad. She is a school teacher and our state ranks near the bottom. They have to pay 1/2 their own retirement and if the family need health care tack on another 600 dollar deduction a month. Now my personal satisfaction in both her degrees. I had a baby girl in high school (my oldest daughter) by a different girl. The baby has lived with me since she was 2 weeks old now 15 1/2 years and her real mother gave up rights to her. This was the end of my sophmore year. My wife and I got married the day after we graduated. We were told it would never last and my wife would never finish college by her mother. It has now been 14 years. I pushed this just to show her we did it with out any help. She refused to pay for my wifes college because she got married, but paid for her other 2. I just can't seem to get ahead no matter how much money I make. It is one thing after another. But that is a whole different story.
ParrotHead2005
Re: Student loan rant It is not cheap. I am a teacher and we get the same pay raise if we get our Masters or take hours. I am lucky our district is one of the highest paying in the state. We just got a new contract. 1st year makes 37,500 and after 20 years your maxed out at 65,189. since I am single my health insurance is $1 dental is$5 and vision is $7 for the year. I get 15 PDO which are Paid Days Off. Per year and they roll over if not used. Our district pays our retirement 5% of our salary plus I do a 403B. They also pay all of our Health Insurance after we retire.
Newarcher
Re: Student loan rant Been there and done THAT! Make sure to keep immacuate records of each and every payment and make sure you get a payoff record for the account. Once you do, keep the records FOREVER. The student loan people have come back against people who have paid their loan off 20 years before and sued them. No records, you stand a chance of paying that loan twice plus penalties and interest. As for college costs, well....they are skyrocketing. Try livng here in GA where we now have the hope scholorship funded by the lottery. Not only is it hard to get into a GA school because of the demand, prices are skyrocketing. Feel your pain brother. New
hunterfisherman
Re: Student loan rant My education cost me 28,000 dollars. I will be paying for it forever. Needed it in my field though so I had no choice. The student loan people own me.

Tominator
Re: Student loan rant Yep. My total undergrad cost probably around $10,000, which took almost 4 years to complete. My Masters will cost me just over $10,000 and will take 16 months to complete. Graduate fees are quite a bit more. I feel the pain on the teacher's pay. Not quite as bad here in Ohio though. LLBUX
Re: Student loan rant There is little incentive to get your Masters and become a "Highly Qualified" Teacher when you pay $10K and get back a raise of about $400/year. Doesn't pay the interest on the loan. BTW, a starting teacher in my district gets about $24,000 and we top out at about $50,000 with 35 years experience and a Masters degree plus 24 hours towards a Doctorate Degree. I started teaching in 1980 at about $12,500. My college degree cost me about $25,000 in 1970's dollars. Makes ya wonder why people teach. It is not for the money. They gotta love kids to stick around.
Guest Dust
Re: Student loan rant If I didn't make a decent living we might be in trouble. Needless to say there are not very many jobs left in this world that pay what I make and don't have college. So kids if you are reading this. GO TO SCHOOL...... Get everything they give ya. Get your education.

Randyman
Re: Student loan rant [ QUOTE ] Makes ya wonder why people teach. It is not for the money. They gotta love kids to stick around. [/ QUOTE ] There's the bottom line. Anyone who became a Teacher for the money, picked the wrong profession! Teachers are WAY underpaid on average. Around here voters are constantly shooting down higher property taxes for better Teacher salaries.
markyj987
Re: Student loan rant Woah woah...let's not get on the case of voters and their choices regarding property taxes...I might need to ask someone to move this post...LOL. But Chris knows I would never EVER complain about teachers' unions in Wisconsin.
Turkeygirl
Re: Student loan rant I just graduated college, consolidated all but one loan (a loan the college owns, said I would be better off paying it after the grace period) so I have right now like $17,700 in loans - paying about $111 per month which I've been told isn't too bad. SaskMan
Re: Student loan rant I've been paying for my education for 7 years, just 3 more to go. 230 bucks a month. It's a bloody joke that student loans aren't interest free, at least they aren't here.
ParrotHead2005
Re: Student loan rant I got lucky for my undergrad. I could put a ball through a hoop once in a while and they paid me to go to school.
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Student loan rant I was very fortunate to have not had to take out loans on my college education, even if I had to its still worth it, nothing beats a higher education, the job market anymore wants it! In 20 years maybe some with a BS will need a Masters just to be considered for the position. Education is something that once you have it, no one can take it away!! ParrotHead2005
Re: Student loan rant THis is how missed up the system is. I had a basketball scholarship. I was at school about 4 weeks in and they call me and tell me to come pick up my check. I had no idea what they meant so I go down to some office and I have a check for 7,400. I am like what is this for. All the money left over like from grants and things I applied for I got to keep since everything was already paid for. So at the beginning of each Sem. I would go down and get my check.
