Who's holding out....

Ok, just curious as to what is your goal for this year? Who all is waiting for a record class deer, who has actually been watching and patterning a specific deer, what are some of your guys' "minimum" size requirements, who is just looking for anything with horns..maybe your first deer..... For the past several years I have put my limit on an 8 point minimum. Basically I know when I see a deer if he is too small for me. I have spent a couple seasons trophy hunting. Last year I hunted a specific buck and ended up getting a shot. This year may be interupted alot due to me having to move during the first week of November frown.gif, but I do have my eye on a nice 8 point about 130 class with perfect symetry. So, lets hear what you guys are shooting for.....

Re: Who\'s holding out....

I just started manageing my land for trophy whitetail three years ago so I shoot eight points or better usually 130 class or higher too. If I want meat I go with some doe. I've patterned a hugh 9 point that goes over 150 so opening day is Sept. 30 we will see how it goes.

Now I do hold out for 150", but many years I wanted the meat in the freezer and to concentrate on getting the kids a deer. Now I can just relax and work for horns. I still respect anyone's right to take any deer legally. Do what you enjoy, as long as you are within the regs.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

I am wanting a specific deer, but I will be honest whatever comes under my stand is pretty much going to get an arrow. The land owner told me to shoot ALL the deer!! And If I wont he will get someone who will. I guess he is fed up with the crop damage! he is older and has no good feelings towards deer!So I am going to take them ALL! If I can!

Re: Who\'s holding out....

I usually take the first deer I see (within reason) to get meat in the freezer. This year I'am playing the game a little different. I've got 2 deer ( 8 & 10 ) that I'am going to try and harvest. Both look to be over 130". I will give them my first two weeks, then I'am back to hunting the meat deer. I get one in the freezer, then I start hunting for the large racks.

This will proable be the first year since I have been bow hunting that I won't kill one on opening day. I have been bow hunting for 9 years now. My streak has to end so time.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

Honestly have to say it does not look too good here this year, despite the dozens of bucks I have passed up over the past several years. Just not seeing the kind of deer we were seeing here up to 3-4 years ago.

Would like to hold out for a good solid 8 pointer beyond its ears, but realistically the odds dont look too good. Have gotten pics of only one or maybe two different bucks that I considered shooters all year long.

Any adult doe gets a ride in the truck, but for bucks, I'll be trying to hold out for something mature. Don't like to put a minimum # of points b/c there are old 6-points and young 8-points, and young 8-points become old 10's or larger. Let my first buck walk last year, but that was only a spike. If I can keep myself from thinking about grilled tenderloin when a young buck walks by, he might live till next year wink.gif.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

I've not scouted at all this year what with the new baby and all. I think I have to go with my gut on this season and just hunt as much as possible. I know most of the areas by now and have a pretty good idea of what's there as far as travel routes. I will take whatever goes close enough to my stand and considering I have a 50 yard pin that's just begging to be used, I might have some supper on the table more often than before. I won't shoot a fawn because that's just a waste of a tag but if they are a good table size then it's going down if I can help it.
