Re: Who\'s holding out....

im playing the same game i have been doing for about 5 years now. shoot a doe right off the bat if i can. then hold out for a buck. last year i shot my biggest at 148 , this year anything under that gets a pass.

i know there are several bucks in the 150 class and above in my areas. while i havent patterned them yet. its just a matter of being selective and waiting on a good one to come to my rattleing or grunt calls.

you just never know , one year i see bunches of big bucks and the next year nothing over 130 class.. its kind of hit an miss. i only have access to a few small spots. so i have to hunt smart and be prepared at all times. here in Iowa you might only get one chance at a buck of a lifetime and i plan on being ready.

Shoot Strong

Re: Who\'s holding out....

Depends on where I'm hunting. Here at home any mature buck will catch an arrow. We just don't grow them as big as other places I travel to out of state. There's one buck in particular that I've got some trail cam pics of that I hope to meet up with here at home. During my hunt in Kansas I'll hold out for something in the 150 class range or better. In Illinois I'll try for one in the 140 class range or better. I'll also mix in a doe or 2 here at home.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

I like getting out as much as possible so I'll hang onto my buck tag as long as possible to see if I can get something that grosses 170 or better. If I cannot find one like that I'll be willing to hang my either sex tag on a doe at the end of the year. Getting out lots is #1, getting a big buck is what I aim to do with my buck tag.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

Normally its the first legal deer that offers an oportunity for me and my hunting buddies.

There are no trophy sized animals in my area and we are severly doe heavy so I encourage a doe to everyone who hunts my property naturally.

Though anything leagl is my bottom line for anyone who hunts it.

I have been seeing some more bucks this year on my trail cam and may wait for one of those. Been years since I took a nice buck with my bow.

But we will see once I am actually on stand and have deer in my sights. LOL

Re: Who\'s holding out....

Does and mature bucks are not safe around me. I really don't put a minimum on size, despite having taken a couple pretty big deer. One of the biggest bucks I ever took is a 7 point with mass out to the ends of his beams. I let little bucks and yearlings walk. Too hard not to whack baby bucks when taking yearlings.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

time in the hunt is key for me...ive just finished a big move and live about an hour and 30 mins. from my woods that i hunt in and so ive just made it back intime a weekago to put a camera out where TYPICALLY i get good results so we'll see, and opening day for me is this sunday the 1 st.....wish they wouldve made it on sat, but only on sunday, then its back to school and wait out another week till i can head back. ive taken some nice bucks the past few years and typically im gonna get my doe outta the way and get settled in for the pre rut..rut..and post rut hunts!!!...130 or better

Any clues as to why you are not seeing deer like you had been? confused.gif

Yep, several reasons. This area used to be somewhat of a well kept secret. The secret somehow got out and now private lands are over run with hunters, some not even there legally. A property of 138 acres 2 miles up the road that had been up for sale for several years. This property is behind my wifes step fathers house, from what my sister in laws husband told me that property was leased to a group about 3 years ago. He told me they had 10 guys deer hunting that property. The property behind us that was 400 some odd acres had been leased to a group of 3 deer hunters for a long long time, the landowner passed away four or five years ago, think his wife is now allowing more people on, or she is not stopping anyone from just doing whatever they want. The property next to that one I know of a man who is tresspassing, the wife worked with his wife and she told the wife right where he was going, only problem the permission he has for the property is not the property he is on, and he is crowding in on the property behind me. The warden will not do anything about it because landowner has to prosecute them and the landowner really does not want to be bothered with this, so the wardens hands are kind of tied.

All this coupled with increased limits and more liberal seasons on does, it is really easy to see what is happening.

Unfortunatley I have been down the road of trying to get other hunters on the same page trying to manage for better quality deer, and to major disappointment that has just not worked out.

Re: Who\'s holding out....

Goal is to take a mature 5-6 year old class buck that hits Pope & Young. Spotted many all over the place and dialing them in at each respective area is going to require a lot of patience and time. Hunting with my best friend Drake this year...two in the stand. One on camera and the other on the bow. He's up first so we will go at it till he puts something down.

We have a lot of does to take out to help keep the whitetail numbers managed. 4 does per hunter so what ever steps out to get this done will be covered.

Free range Axis deer litter this area as well. Out of axis venison so thats another side to this season. We spotted one huge Axis buck on trail camera this summer and we are hunting them as well. No tag requirement to take one so even if we tag out, we will still be on the stand hunting axis.

Our goal this year, a couple of mature bucks down and all shots on video this season. Bowhunting is tough enough...we just made things way tougher LOL!

My goals are pretty much the same every year, we've been doing quality deer management for the past 10 years, the first thing that we look at with deer is there age if there 2 1/2 or younger they wont be shot, we do occassionally shoot a 3 1/2 year old but it has to be a big one....so i guess my goal for this year would be a deer older than 3 1/2 and one that would make P&Y

Re: Who\'s holding out....

I think I'm holding out this year when i hunt in Indiana. Last year i saw a few 1 1/2 yr olds but they were two small and I didn't have a good shot. This year I moved my stand in a better location so they pass me right up.

Unless one that is decent sized, I'll pass them up. There is at least a 130-140 class deer that lives near my stand and ground blind that i saw last year. He's been there an aweful lot so I may wait for him.
