Strut10
Re: Quigley Down Under Good flick as long as you can, for two hours, ignore all you know about range estimation and the terminal ballistics of the 45-120 cartridge. total disaster
Re: Quigley Down Under I like at the end when he said "I never said I couldn't use a handgun I said I have no use for one" LOL

RangerClay
Re: Quigley Down Under That is a great western. Did you know that Tom Selleck hosts a shooting contest every year and you have to use Sharps rifles? It is advertised in my SASS newsletter every year. Like Strut10 said i am sure that it was exaggerated in the movie. [/ QUOTE ] BOLOGNA!!!!! In our local SASS long range competitions we shoot Sharps rifles at 500 yards with OPEN SIGHTS!! We are expected to hit the vitals of a large steel buffalo and the vitals are not bigger than the bucket Quigley shot at in the movie. The movie does not exaggerate a single thing. http://www.sassnet.com/

Like Strut10 said i am sure that it was exaggerated in the movie. [/ QUOTE ] From what I have seen, the accuracy of the Sharps is very impressive. My point was ballistics vs. range estimation. At 500 yards....... just using for illustration....... a typical 535 gr. hard lead cast bullet shot from a 45-120 (sighted in dead on at 100 yards) is dropping right around 3 feet every 25 yards. Who here can tell me that an 18 inch bucket is 500 yards away and not 475?? Or 525??
Strut10
Re: Quigley Down Under Just for discussion..........at 1000 yards you'd have to aim 132 feet high.
TexasDeerHunter
Re: Quigley Down Under A 3ft drop in 25 yards seems a bit much, are you certain that is accurate?
Strut10
Re: Quigley Down Under Yep. It's right. Sighted in dead on at 100 yards it's 26 inches low at 200 yards. Now, this is for a blackpowder load of 120 gr. of FFg and a 535 gr. hard lead cast bullet at 1200 fps. Maybe with smokeless powder you could get somewhat better numbers. But I don't think Quigley had any smokeless.
Jeramie
Re: Quigley Down Under Not on my top ten list but I rarely pass it up on the way through! It is a great movie. I like Tom and have since his PI days...

It just hasn't quite made it to the top yet. I should think, when shooting at a known distance, a guy could do some pretty fancy shooting with one. I've done some 300 yardish shooting with a Trapdoor Springfield 45-70. Hitting small targets isn't that hard once you figure out your sight setting. Think about it........in the days of the buffalo hunters..........a guy would have all the time he wanted to "walk his shots in". Once you had your reciever sight dialed in.........shoot away.
