Re: Team 1

I took a friend out muzzleloader hunting this weekend. He had a mule deer tag, I had a whitetail tag. He ended up cutting his tag on a beautiful muley. My friend is an avid bird hunter, but a little short on experience when it comes to big game, so this is his first big buck.

I glassed this buck in his bed from 600 yards away. We were able to close the distance to 50 yards, and my friend made a perfect double lung shot when the buck stood up.

The buck's rack has 18 scorable points - 10 on the right, including 3 brow stickers and 8 on the left including 2 brow stickers. I rough scored the rack at 185 1/8 gross. The deer had a live weight of around 300 lbs - the field dressed weight was 242 lbs, and the carcass weight was 210 lbs. It was a bit of a task getting him out of the hills and into the truck, but we enjoyed every minute of it. My friend had one of his hunting dogs pass away suddenly last weekend, so this hunt was really good therapy for him.

I had a chance at a whitetail that would make you guys quickly forget about my little "no field photo" booboo with my mule deer earlier this year. This whitetail had at least 6 typical tines on his right side. I passed on a 100 yard running shot, hoping the buck would stop since he wasn't aware of me. He stopped briefly, but he was 171 yards with his backend to me. I'm hoping to get out a couple of days during the rifle season in late November to try to catch up with him again.

[ QUOTE ]

My brother shot a nice buck back home, but I haven't talked to him a whole lot about the hunt.

My brother and dad officially pulled one on me good. He sent me the following picture yesterday telling me he had shot a buck...

He then sends me the following pictures today and tells me he actually shot a doe and my dad found the buck dead roughly 5 yards from where the doe expired. I had a good laugh, but I owe them now. grin.gif

Re: Team 1

Guys my season seems to be going down hill. At the beginning of the season I was seeing alot of bucks and does most were about 45-60 yards out so I couldn't get a shot. The others were fawns that came in closer and since the third week of October I have only seen 1 NICE buck and that was when I wasn't in the stand now the only thing I see are fawns. I am hoping the right starts to kick in here soon so hopefully i can see that big buck again.

Re: Team 1

Went home this weekend ti hunt and was skunked. I saw 5 deer over 2 days, only 1 buck and it was a small 6pt. My brother and dad haven't seen anything to shoot either. Rutting activity is just starting back home. Will be back there next weekend, hopefully some good bucks are spotted.

Re: Team 1

I hunted Saturday and Sunday morning.Saturday was terrible, didn't see a single deer in 4 hours of hunting in the morning. It was pretty windy so I'm sure that didn't help.

Sunday I had a buck coming in before daylight and he was grunting like crazy. He got about 2 steps from the tree and I could see from the moonlight he was a little basket rack. After he walked off a ways I heard another buck make a snort wheeze which was pretty cool.I've never heard that in the woods before so I was getting pumped. After the sun came up I gave a few grunts and estrous bleats and about 5 minutes later this little buck came back in.He worked a scrape at 20 yards right in my shooting lane.I wish he was a little bigger I would have been sending an easton his way.Only other deer I saw that morning was a doe that snuck in behind me and never gave me a shot.

Looks like I'm done till next Sunday.

Re: Team 1

Massive weather change going on here. It's been around 70 the last couple days and tomorrow's high is around 40. It's very windy and raining now, with a chance of it changing to snow overnight. At home where I hunt, the rain/snow is suppose to carryover to in the morning, so it should be some excellent weather for some big buck action. I'll be in my Ameristep blind staying dry in the morning. Hopefully a big guy comes by. Good luck all and hunt safe.

Re: Team 1

Where abouts are you going pheasant hunting?I've went for about 12 straight years up until this year.We went around Woonsocket and Letcher, which is about 20 miles NE of Mitchell.Sounds like fun!

I'm stuck at work today, but plan on going out tomorrow morning.Tomorrow it's supposed to warm up some and our wind is supposed to be SE,which is terrible for all of my stands,so I'm not sure what I'll do yet.

Re: Team 1

We are going to be going around Witlock, I think it is more north central. But I have been out to the woonsocket area before.

just actually got home from hunting tonight and boy was it a MESS!!! Had deer within 30 yards of me but it is the area to thick to shoot into. So we decided to come home since it is to muddy to do anything, even with a fourwheeler.

Re: Team 1

Saw a few deer the last couple weekends. Had the "Bent Brow" 8-point within 40 yards but couldn't get a shot. I'm probably done bowhunting for the year. This is my final semester in tech school, so I'm going to concentrate on that rather than late season. I have gun season the 18th to 26th and a 4-day doe season in December.

Re: Team 1

This is possibly the worst season I've ever had for seeing bucks. I've seen a total of 3 bucks while hunting so far. Nothing bigger than a 2 1/2 year old 120" 8pt. Hopefully things get better next weekend with firearm season coming in for 3 days.

Rut hasn't really kicked in yet either. Bucks not chasing does yet. Heavy rubbing and scraping just now starting in our area. This might be the latest I've ever seen the rut get going good.

Re: Team 1

Well, another frustrating weekend for me.I saw a ton of movement Saturday night, and took a shot at a doe.I drew back when she was behind a tree and she heard the seat on my stand creak and froze. As she took one more step I released and heard the arrow "thwack", and thought I nailed her.I got down and checked the arrow...no blood or hair, but the arrow was bent and a fletching was ripped off.As I replayed the thing in my mind I noticed a scar on the tree she was behind. The arrow hit it and veered in front of her.Last night I jumped two does going in to my stand about 30 yards from the truck, and that was all I saw the whole afternoon.I'm taking off Thursday for bowhunting and Friday for Illinois shotgun opener,so hopefully this time next week I'll have a few points to add.

On a brighter note,my neighbor managed to shoot a absolute pig last night. It was the first time he's had a chance to bowhunt all year...he said he got to his stand about 2:30 and shot the buck about 3:15.This thing has 15 scoreable points and is absolutely massive.I would say he should score around 170".I'll try and get a few pics from him,but it will probably not be till next week.
