MUDRUNNER
Re: Team 1 How did everybody do this weekend? I went out Saturday morning, and seen a few does.I took a shot at one ,but somehow managed to shoot right over her back at about 25 yards.Seems every year I manage to botch up one shot for some reason.Next Saturday I'm going to a farm I haven't hunted all year so it should be good. Then I'm going to put my scope on my slug gun and zero it in so I'm ready for shotgun season. Chrud
Re: Team 1 I didn't see any this weekend. I have come to the conclusion that it is near impossible to move in a stand or draw on a turkey without being busted. We did find where I'll rifle hunt this year. It'll be a good spot for a food plot in the next few years also.
Guest LDB
Re: Team 1 Well guys, I screwed up. Last Wednesday I got a nice muley buck with my muzzleloader that rough scores 190 with 12 scorable points. I was hunting by myself in a foot access only area, and it was cold. My digital camera had been sitting back in the truck, and when I returned to the deer to take some field photos before de-boning it and hauling it out, my camera had frozen up. No field photos. I just looked at the deer entry rules and noticed that they aren't accepting photos of the just the rack, so it looks like I won't get to enter that deer in the contest. I wasn't going to haul him out just field-dressed - the deer was probably over 300 lbs on the hoof. 110-125 lbs of meat in the coolers plus hide and antlers is a lot easier to haul out on my deer cart than 250 lbs of field-dressed deer, especially when you have to cover a couple of miles of hills and valleys in the dark. I guess I'll either have to get a new digital camera that isn't a big sissy in cold weather or I'll have to remember to keep it with me to keep it warm. Sorry again guys. Here's a field photo of the moose I got on Friday. My camera stayed warm long enough to take 2 field photos before seizing up on this one. IowaDeerHunter
Re: Team 1 Hey congrats on the moose AND mulie! Don't worry about it though, as ong as you post pictures of the rack for us to see! I haven't had much luck. Went down this weekend, passed a young seven point, button buck, and missed a doe (misjudged her and she ducked hard when I shot) no excuses though. Guest LDB
Re: Team 1 Here's a photo of the rack from my muzzleloader mule deer buck. The photo is a bit generous - it makes the rack look slightly bigger than it is. Saskbucks came by last night and gross scored it at 191 3/8. I snuck up within 40 yards and then waited 4 hours to get a shot at this buck. I passed on a buck with a similar sized rack but smaller body that was in the same group as this buck. After 4 hours, I had started shivering so I decided to make things happen before the shivering got uncontrollable. I grunted at the buck to make him get out of his bed on the other side of a willow bunch. He noticed me just as I was aiming and had moved a bit at the shot. It turns out that I hit him in the liver, a fatal shot that would have taken a little while to kill him. I watched him trot/walk about 500 yards after the shot and bed down again. After waiting 1 hour, he still had not expired, so I snuck in again to about 30 yards and shot him through the neck. He wasn't the biggest buck that I had seen that day, but I am really happy with him and the way the hunt played out. Usually patience is one of my downfalls. I'm going to try get out for whitetails before the end of the month. I'll be buying a disposable camera for a back-up in case the cold weather freezes up my digital again. Sorry again about not being able to enter this buck for the team - I should have had a back-up camera, and I should have read the rules about not being able to enter skull plate photos. Anybody else been doing much hunting?
tp793
Re: Team 1 Man thats one heck of a buck..congrats!! I've been out pretty often but only after soccer practice in the afternoon and on the weekends. Only been seeing does though. Got one so far, but it seems like things will really start to heat up here around the rut!

Guest tyshe17
Re: Team 1 great deer LDB! I had a rough weekend hunting. I missed a small buck at 18 yds. Bottom limb hit the stand and all I managed to do was take some hair off his back. Then Friday morning, I shot a trukey 22 yards. I aimed for a the wing joint and hit about an inch below it. Gave the thing 2.5 hours then followed pools of good blood for 70 yards or so. Then everything quit. Came back and looked twice more, and nothing new. If it had been a 3-d target it would have been a 10 so the shot was good. I dont know what I should do differently. I figured at 1 3/16 muzzy hole would put it down... Finally I went with the little brother Sunday morning, and we busted deer around where the stands were before dark so I sent him on up the hill. He had two does at 40, but he wont shoot over 30. These were the first deer he has seen this season so I was happy about that. I saw nothing which is the first time in 3 years I have been blanked at that stand. Guess they bedded early Sunday morning. I will be at it agian in two weeks with bow and muzzleloader so we will see how it turns out. Good luck to everyone. MUDRUNNER
Re: Team 1 Well, nothing this weekend.I went out Saturday, and it was SSLLOOWW.I saw a little basket six and a doe come by about 9:00 a.m., but couldn't get a shot at the doe. Then I jumped a few does up about 50 yards from the truck on my way out.I shot my slug gun a few times getting it ready for gun season.I'm going to try and go out Tuesday after work for a few hours, and I'm trying another new farm next weekend. Chrud
Re: Team 1 It's been really, really slow since the first couple weekends. There is a lot of scrapes and rubs though. We saw 8 deer yesterday while giving a tour. The only reason we saw them is because we didn't have any bows with us. I think the switch will start flipping next weekend. At least I hope so. Mach1
Re: Team 1 I can't get out again until the first weekend in November, but then it'll be every weekend for a month. Rutting activity should be kicking in about that time in our area.
toddyboman
Re: Team 1 [ QUOTE ] I think the switch will start flipping next weekend. At least I hope so. [/ QUOTE ] I think you are right. I have seen buck starting to chase does, buck fighting a bit more aggressivley. Sunday night I saw a good shooter buck out rubbing and fighting. Had a shot at 40 yards but thougth he was going to come closer, but I did not know there was another buck coming in behind me, well needless to say the shooter buck went from coming towards me to going towards the other buck. Got to watch them fight. Then some does came in and the chase was on. Its starting to heat up in the wild outdoors. YEAH!!!
MUDRUNNER
Re: Team 1 I left work at 3:00 yesterday and went out and sat till 7:00.First time all year I got completely skunked and never even saw a single deer.I'll try again Saturday. IowaDeerHunter
Re: Team 1 Well with football and the whole playoof system my hunting will be messed up, as I will be practicing on the weekends. So looks like the bucks are starting to chase and I am busting out the doe decoy with the HIGH PRICED standing estrous. Gonna be hunting while my brother video tapes. tp793
Re: Team 1 yeah, my hunting season is a little wacky too. With soccer tournaments in full swing, and us playing better than ever, Im more focused on that right now so my hunting has taken the back seat for now. I will be in the woods on Saturday morning and Sunday also.
IowaDeerHunter
Re: Team 1 yeah hunting is on the back seat. not many people have the chance to make a run for a state championship in football, let alone possibly twice in my HS career. So i can hunt all my life, but only play football once.
tp793
Re: Team 1 yep, we are farther than any team has ever been in tournaments for soccer for our school. and playing the team that upset us last year in tourny's and possibly playing the winner of two nationally ranked teams, hunting is not #1 right now. BUT i will be out as soon as we are done!
Guest Finn
Re: Team 1 Good luck with your tournaments, guys. That's awesome to make it so far in playoffs. I probably won't get to hunt until December, when I fly to Wisconsin for 2 weeks.
IowaDeerHunter
Re: Team 1 Nothing this weekend, but we did put up an AWESOME new stand right in the middle of a valley, where there is a TON of deer/buck sign.
