Re: Team 6

Forgot to mention that between Dec 1 and yesterday, we have gotten pictures of some very nice bucks. We havent had the cameras out lately due to technical difficulties. The buck seen in my avatar(think that's what it is, the pic under my name) has showed back up. That picture was taken July 22 and he hadnt been seen since. He reappeared in front of the camera Dec 2 and he's grown into a dandy buck. He looks to be a 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 year deer. He's a main frame 10 with a kicker coming off each G2. My dad and I both think high 140's but two B&C scorers have said mid 150's. Either way, i want my arrow to find him. Also had pictures of a big main frame 8 with a kicker off one G2. He's prolly 4 1/2, but he'll be passed hopefully with a gun but not with a bow. Also another big 4 1/2 8, and he's gonna be shot with either if opportunity shows. He's a pretty good buck, but ugly. Also pics of a young 11 and a young 10 which will be passed with guns but definitely not bows. 2 more young 8's and a big young 6 just not good genetics on him. Maybe i'll get one of the good ones this weekend. By the way, these were all taken same night in same place. Rut should kick up in a week or so, just in time for my Christmas holidays

Re: Team 6

Got us 5 more points this morning smile.gif

Got in the tree about 6 this morning, it was still very dark, so I was just sitting there waiting on the critters to start stirring and the morning to begin. A little after 7 I hear something coming behind me, I looked around the tree and here came 2 does and 2 yearlings. I got stood up and had my bow in hand, ready to send an arrow towards either of the older does. They got out in front of me and one gave me the shot and I sent my muzzy tipped arrow towards her.

I will get the pics up when I get back home from my parents sometime tomorrow.

Re: Team 6

I'm out of school til the third of Jan. The rut should be very very near, the only problem is that it is a little warm. Can't go this evening because of weight lifting, but i'll be perched in a tree when the sun pops up tomorrow. Rifle starts back Sat morn, so then i have to start back deciding what i'm going to take each time

[ QUOTE ]

Yesterday evening I decided to go to a little strip of oak woods that hadn't been hunted this year. On one hand, i thought i was probably wasting my time there but something kept telling me to go there. As i left my uncles house ( woods about 200 yards behind the house), i told him it was time for me to get a buck with a bow and that 7 years and 14 days were long enough.

I went back, and found a tall pine to climb among all the oaks. Saw pretty good sign coming in but figured that most of it was made at night. Got settled in at 5:10 and started the long fight with skeeters. At 6 30, i heard some deer jump the fence coming out of the bedding area about 60 yards from me and out of view. I readied my self and waited. 5 minutes later a buck appeared 20 yards in front of me and fed to my left. He had 3 points on the left and nothing on right, so he isn't legal in MS. Then i saw the other buck. I saw he was a good racked deer and didn't look back at the horns again. for sure a 14" 8, didnt really get a head on view. He fed to ten yards and then turned perfectly broadside. i drew but when i did my Scent-Lok facemask (first time i've ever worn it, dont know why i switched yesterday evening) got caught in my mouth. I couldnt get my kisser locked in, but i aimed and fired anyway. shot hit in middle of front shoulder but i was confident anyhow.

We gave him an hour, then my dad, uncle, and me went back. My arrow had broke off 20 yards into his run. we had all but 4 3/4 inches of the arrow. we figured it all that was buried inside we should get him. didn't find blood til 80 yards down the trail. followed it easy for 60 yards then it got weak. We backed out and came back this morning. found no blood past where we stopped so we started following different trails through the pine thicket.

We never found him after 3 hours of circling. I feel like he'll live. I'm still sick at my stomach. he was gonna be a great MS bow buck. especially a first. I guess my quest for a buck will have to wait a lil longer. Maybe this evening. But i guess it is like my uncle said, "You win some, You lose some"

I just went back and read this post from Oct 15. Guess what? I found the skull and horns yesterday. It made me sick at my stomach. He was a 10 with a 15 inch spread. I'll try to post a pic. He was around 300 yards from where i shot him and 150 from where we had last blood, but he had circled totally away from that direction. we found it in a little strip of woods about 10 yards wide that separate two pastures. This was the last place i would have thought he would have gone. As i said in the earlier post, i exerted everything i could to find this deer, but i guess i was wrong. We were in total shock when we found him. My dad, uncle, and myself could not believe that he ran where he did.

Re: Team 6

Haven't been here in a while. Had trouble finding our thread for team 6. Anybody had luck lately? I went Christmas eve morning and saw 4 does. When I went to put my scope on the first one I must have breathed on my end of the scope because it was fogged up. By the time I got it cleared off with my sleeve, all were in the woods. Plan on going back out this afternoon. We have had a front move through and it should stop raining around noon. Temps have dropped since this morning. Hope they will be moving this afternoon. Maybe i will get a chance.

Re: Team 6

Yesterday was closing day for my area. Didn't have any luck this season. That sucks. I have gotten something the past 3 years. I guess everyone has dry years. Was hoping to add a little meat to the freezer. Sorry team. It wasn't for lack of trying. I was out in the stand every chance I had. Will really practice this summer with my new bow so maybe this fall I will have a chance before rifle even opens.

Re: Team 6

Hey all. Yeah MRS, everyone had dry years and it looks like we are both gonna have one. My season is up at the end of this week. I've been hunting every weekend hard, but in PA, after rifle (the slaugher) its rough to get the deer to come out of their burrows. They go nocturnal except for the youngest and dumbest. I saw the same three this past Saturday as the Sat. before it, and they were all slickheads... and that was after driving roughly 300 acres that normally holds at least 20 deer. Oh well, I guess I should keep my hopes up for Saturday!?!

Re: Team 6

well it looks like i will have a dry year also. I've got til the 31st but every weekday evening is baseball along with half of saturdays. So for my count, i can find a way to go for 3-6 days. I'm not counting it as over, but it might be. I'm still gonna go at it the same though. All in all, this season has been pretty good. Passed many good bucks, including a 9 or 10 yesterday evening. Season has had only 2 dark spots, the wounded buck with my bow and a late November drought for about two weeks.

Re: Team 6

Well my season is over guys. No harvest. Was a great season if you don't measure success on the killing. Yeah, it maybe the purpose, but it was a great 4 months for me. I'm gonna prolly write a summary in the Deer Hunting room, so look for it please. Sorry i didnt bring any points to the team. It's been fun being on yall's team. Maybe i'll be matched with some of you next year.
