7 - The Freezer Fillers

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

Filled my anterless muzzleloader tag over the weekend. At home/work for a couple of days, then

back late Thursday to hunt through the close of smokepole season this Sunday.

If I don't get an upgrade by then, I'll post the pics and stats to the entry thread.

Also, a fellow in my hunting group killed one of the big boys I've been looking for since I saw him on Labor Day weekend. 132 lbs dressed, 10 point, guess him to score 150s and make the Oklahoma record book easily. An absolutely beautiful deer, very symmetrical. I'll post a pic of him, plus my wife's 118lb 10pt with some nice forked horns, sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Tomorrow is my last day for two whole weeks!! Woohooo!

I'll be hunting everyday up until the 15th and then I'll be moving my family into our new home.

The 9th, I'll be heading up to Okie Bow Camp with a bunch of fellow forum members...ought to be fun.

Good luck with the move, MCH, and to everybody hunting this weekend. I'm headed to the woods later this afternoon.

elnor, you should see if you could stop by one day. We're always at camp around noon time, shooting lies and telling bull.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

good luck this weekend everyone, i found a hot rub line running on the other side of the neighbors fence so im going to go sit on the fence line and try little bit of rattling tonight, if that doesnt work the farmer told me there are does that walk right down to where i will be almost every night through the pasture, so who knows.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

We'll put your mom in our prayers YB.

Tried getting in some hunting on the last day of blackpowder season but the weather didn't cooperate. Rain started 30 minutes into my hunt. I lasted an hour, but finally decided to come out. It's still raining as I type this.

Oh well, I'm off for the next two weeks and should get some quality hunting time in.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

No luck last weekend. I saw plenty of does and spikes up close, but nothing big to hang my buck tag on. The only big boy that came close was there-and-gone so quick I didn't even have time to raise my Hawken and sight on him.

I'm planning to be back in the woods on the 18th for deer, and maybe a day or two between now and then for a little fall turkey hunting (OK's fall turkey gun season is Nov 4-17 this year).

I'll post my muzzleloader antlerless photos and story if I don't get something bigger by the end of rifle season (Dec 3). Nothing fancy about it, just a lil'un that jumped in front of Mama Doe at exactly the wrong time.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

went out last weekend, saw a 5 and 6 pointer along with a few does and a button buck, nothing i wantedto shoot at, my uncle walked in to meet up with me and jumped buck sleeping on the same hill i was on about fifty yards away, never knew he was there! we got permission to hunt on a new property right by where we hunt, i found rubs in the guys driveway, see deer there all of the time, correct me if im wrong but he said he ones 3000 sq feet in one direction, even if his property was a hundred foot wide, wouldnt that be like a couple hundred acres?

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

yeah, i got that now, where he told us wasnt exactly right, he has about 13 acres all in all, go figure we saw a few treestands near the property line and one guy that hunts on six acres behind the property had his treestand about ten yards over the fence on the property we are going to be hunting, theres no unpressured spots around here!

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

I'll give you guys an update. I haven't posted much on the regular board about my latest happenings for fear of being flamed. I've shot, and lost two dandy bucks this year. The first being a @140" as a straight ten point. The shot was low, and I don't believe the deer was fatally wounded. I had good blood for the first hundred yards, and he then bedded down. After he got up, I could only find drops of blood here and there and that went on for about a mile before the blood finally ran out. He never bedded down again. A week later, I had yet another opportunity on an even larger buck. This one being a huge eight point. I would estimate him to be in the high 140's to 150 range. He was ONLY 6 yards! 6 yards and quartering away! You couldn't ask for a better shot. But, it was probably too close. I don't know exactly what happened on the shot, because the buck turned 180 degrees and I couldn't see where the arrow hit. Nearly the same story as the first buck. I had four people helping me the next day, we tracked him definitely for a mile on only drops of blood before finally running out of blood. He never bled good. I held the draw about to the point that I could no longer hold it on that deer. I must have severely pulled the shot and put it in front of his shoulder, and exited the brisket. No idea really. Before I get flamed or any accusations are raised; I shot my bow all summer. I shoot practice arrows each time I enter the stand. I have practiced broadheads, etc., etc., etc. No idea what the deal is, just bad luck I guess...2X. I'll be rifle hunting, as well as headed to Iowa for shotgun season, and I'll be back home to hunt our late season. Just had a rough year thus far.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

Bad luck, JamesVee. Happens to all of us at some point, unfortunately. I've had the "good" luck over the years of missing too many. Twigs where I didn't see them, good shots gone bad for other reasons, you name it. I even had the big boy I'd been scouting this fall get shot by a visiting out of state hunter (friend of my uncle) on the last hour of the last day he was in hunting camp...after I'd scouted that 145 class ten point for the last two months! I guess that's just huntin.

The good news is, tomorrow's a new day. In my case, I'm going to be back in the woods come this weekend, gunning for my second choice buck and a little doe venison.

Good luck to everyone hitting the woods again!

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

Sorry to hear about your luck JamesVee. It happens.

Well guys, I went deerless at Okie bowcamp. I just knew I was going to harvest another big 'un. But the area I was hunting somehow got very popular since last year. Last year at the campsite, there may have been 10 campsites. This year??? Over 30.

Still with 30,000 acres, there's more than enough room for 100 hunters you'd think. But in my area alone, I had 4 hunters in a 20 acre area. Needless to say, I didn't even see a deer in that pressured area.

On the last evening there, I decided to hunt an area Gator had been hunting where he hadn't seen another hunter. Guess what?? Had a hunter come by twice in 30 minutes AND some mexican workers were working on some geological studies within 100 yards. And they weren't quiet.grin.gif

Oh well, I returned home and began seeing deer like I should. Passed up a young 8 point yesterday morning. He had good width, but his mass and height weren't up to par. I've only got one buck tag for my bow so I'm gonna be a little picky. I still plan on upgrading my spike to at least an 8 even if I have to take one with a rifle during the next two weeks.

I'm closing on my new home at 10:30 this morning so the next couple days of my vacation will be spent moving.grin.gif

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

well tomorrow is my last day of vacation and so far deer hunting has been rough. have not seen as many as usual but that is mainly because i have been hunting on my property that i just got this fall. mostly a recon mission for future years. so far with trail cameras and my eyes i have seen 6 different bucks in the 140-160 range but only had one in range so far and i hit a twig. i had a 120 8 pt cross at 10 yards but i let him walk. friday it is back to work for 6 days then i am off for 9 days to have shotgun season to hunt. hopefully i will at least shoot a doe during our gun week and get us at least 5 points.
