Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

I'm going to finally get my little one (ML anterless) posted today, so that'll be five points for the team. Once MCH's 8pt is on there, we should be #1!

UPDATE: For some reason, the Picture Post area is limiting me to one photo upload per day. Although I've uploaded the pic of me with the deer, I guess I won't be able to upload the pic of the tag until tomorrow, so it'll be at least tomorrow before we get my five points for the team.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

Well, I'm officially done for the season. Gator came down this weekend and we had a blast hunting together. I ended up taking a small 7 pointer with my bow on the last morning. It was great having a hunting partner within hearing distance of you and taking a buck.

What's funny is that when I went to stop the 7 point to get a better look at him, I whistled. Next thing I know, Gator whistles back.grin.gif

BTW--the only hold up on getting my deer entered is that the check in station had run out of carcass tags the day I was there so they just wrote the info on a flourescent index card.grin.gif When I checked in my buck today, they said to bring the card back and they would give me an official carcass tag. Will probably get that later this week.

Re: 7 - The Freezer Fillers

I got my little one posted to the entry thread, so count five more points for Freezer Fillers.

Click here for pictures or read on below for details on the hunt.

"Spazzy fawn"

Since this was my wife's first year muzzleloader hunting, I spent some time helping her set up a her blind and get comfortable with everything on the day before OK muzzleloader season opened, Friday October 27. She hunted there opening day, October 28, and passed on a small four point buck that morning before seeing a very big bodied, decently antlered 10 point chasing after a large group of does that evening. She decided she wanted to get that 10 point, which became known as the Fork Horn Buck because of some unusual branching in his G2 tines.

Since she never had a shot she was comfortable with on Saturday and believed he would show up Sunday afternoon, she opted to sleep in Sunday morning. I decided to sit in her blind and see what appeared.

Very shortly after settling in and with it still too dark to shoot, I saw a group of two large does and two fawns appear from my left (west) feeding to my right through the low draw in front of me. I first saw them around 6:05AM, when it was still so dark I couldn't even see my open metal sights. I watched and videoed them as they fed by in front of me, all the way out of sight into the edge of a nearby field, before slowly turning around some bois d'arcs in the corner of the field and starting to feed back my way.

By around 6:30AM they were in front of me, out at about 66 yards.

I decided if they came closer, within about 50-55 yards, to shoot the largest of the two does. She seemed interested in the blind (I'd just moved it 110 steps west that morning, so it was a new camo blob where one hadn't been the day before). She took several steps closer, eating, then looking up quickly at me and the blind, trying to "catch" the camo blog moving.

As she got within about 45 yards, she turned to my left and started feeding by broadside. I braced on the blind cross-pole for a shot. I decided to wait until she stopped and was eating, broadside and still. She stopped at 40 yards. I pulled the set trigger to set my main trigger to hairpin. She was still feeding, stationary, when I started pulling the trigger to fire.

There was a rush of sensations as my mind simultaneously registered "I think she took a step or two", the loud kaboom of the rifle firing, and the cloud of smoke belching forth from the muzzle. As I wondered if I'd really seen her move right as I shot, I saw three deer running away, not four. I then saw one on the ground, and it died within 2 or 3 seconds. I said a prayer of thanksgiving and set about reloading (just in case) and gathering up my things in the blind.

When I got out of the blind and walked over to the "doe", however, it wasn't the big one I was expecting. In fact, it was one of the fawns. And then it hit me: Just as I pulled the trigger, the doe *did* move forward out of the shot, and just a she moved, so did one of the fawns that had been standing clear of the shot, closer to me up the little rise than her, only a moment earlier. This little buck fawn had literally moved right into the line of fire at the last instant.

I wished he hadn't done that, but knew there was nothing I could do about it now. Again I thanked God for the venison for my family and headed for the farm house to get the truck.

Footnote: My wife shot the Fork Horn Buck later that evening. His antlers truly are unique, and she's decided to have him mounted.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving

Tonight is the last night for me boys. I haven't been able to out-do my buck from Iowa. I've been working on a buck that would eat that Iowa 150" for breakfast. Had one opportunity on him about a week ago and didn't take the shot. Best of luck to everyone who is still hunting, and congrats to those who have tagged out already.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving

yeah dave this year it ends feb 4th. hopefully i will get out this afternoon. I have not had the opportunity to hunt since muzzleloader a few days after christmas. Hopefully the woods are settled and the deer are up after all this rain. I have an unpicked bean field half a mile away that i am going to set up on and hopefully catch them coming to feed.
