Re: Team 9

I've been fighting a nasty cold all week. Sore throat, real stuffy head. headache, chest is congested.....pretty much the works. I got all packed up ready to go last night, but honestly wasn't sure if I was up to it. Woke up at 3:45, and came down on the computer to do some reading, and see how I felt. I pretty much felt like crap. I read the story fromanother forum that a friend of mine posted last night last night. He shot a buck, a doe, and a turkey last night, from the same stand. That got me pumped, and made up my mind to get my butt out in a tree. I medicated myself with claritin, afrin, and ibuprofen, and headed out. Was 34 degrees with a heavy frost. Perfect morning! got to Paugusset State Forest. got on my pack, and started the long hike in. It's about a mile and a half hike. It is a river valley, and I was disappointed to see there was no frost, and it was extremely foggy. I got to my stand, and got situated by 5:50. At legal shooting time, 6:33, it was still too dark and foggy to see. The fog didn't burn off until around 9am. at 10;05, I have 2 deer come up behind me. They never offered a shot they just followed the path the leads out of the draw I'm in. One was a doe, the other was a big bodied 12" or so spike. He was safe, as I had no plans to take him anyway. Around 10:20, I have deer coming in again. They are coming from directly in front of me, which is the worst place for me to have deer come from. There is a hill there ,and the deer are almost at eye level with me at one point.I grabbed my bow, and help it in front of me to try and break me up some. A large doe, and a skipper came in. Never knew I was there. There is a run off directly under my stand, and they headed right to it and were drinking from it. I watched them for about 20 minutes. Every time the doe got more then 20 or 30 feet from the skipper, the skipper came running over to the doe. nuzzling her. It was entertaining. I had a few shots at the skipper, but the mother never gave me a shot. I most likely wouldn't have taken it if she did. I'm getting soft...lol.

One thing about today. I'm pretty confident about my scent control. The spike, and the doe went up the exact trail that I walked down to my stand. They never spooked. The doe, and the fawn both spent at least 5 minutes directly under me. The doe was rooting around in the leaves, exactly where i climb into my tree ,and she never spooked. She looked up at me a few times, but didn't seem to even notice me. I have a really good feeling about this stand with the rut coming up. Trying to decide if I should stay out of it for the next couple weeks. Small game opens next Saturday, so there is a good chance that the deer habits are going to change drastically. I hope not though.

Well that was my day. It was an entertaining morning. I stayed in this afternoon as I'm really feeling like crap. Gonna relax today and tomorrow and hope to kick this cold.

Team 9 picture reminder

Just want to remind everyone to make sure you get a picture of you, and your deer, before he is caped out. The picture need to show you, and the whole deer. Bushman, on team 20 just lost good points for his team for only having a picture of his 15 point non-typical caped out. Just wanted to remind everyone.

Re: Team 9

Great weekend for me guys. No kills but plenty of opportunities. Saturday afternoon I traveled to a new spot to hunt and was just setting up when I had a little mishap. I had just set my climber down and was starting to trim some limbs so I could climb the tree when I stubled slightly and my saw slipped off the tree limb and right into my thumb! What a mess I was in then. I can honestly say I have never seen anything bleed so much. I wasn't sure the extent of the injury do to the amount of blood that was comming out of my thumb. Looked like I had been hit with a Muzzy!!! Anyway, I wrapped it up in my fleece face mask and began the chore of packing all my stuff back to my ATV, driving the ATV back to the truck, unloading all my stuff from the ATV into the truck, loading the ATV into the truck, changing out of my hunting duds, and driving the 45 minutes back home. All with one good hand. I finally arrived back home and got it stop bleading and decided I didn't really need stitches. So I cleaned it up reall good, put some butterflies on it and headed back to the woods.

This is where the story gets good. Take a good look at my avatar. This is a trail camera I got last year and a deer I almost got a shot at last year. Well, let's just say he is still in the area this year. He came by at about 50yds on Saturday evening, but no shot presented itself. He has longer tines, more mass and a wider spread. Nothing short of amazing let me tell you. I have never seen anything like it my life.

Due to different wind conditions on Sunday I stayed out of that particular area and hunted a different property where I have spotted a couple 150"+ deer. I had between 20 and 30 does and fawns less that 20ft from the base of my tree between Sunday morning and evening. I also had a little 120in basket rack 8-pt come by sniffing the does and grunting up a storm. He came right to the base of my tree and looked up but never busted me. I could have blazed some of those does this weekend but I was in an area where I knew there were a couple nice bucks and didn't want to reveal my ambush spot just yet. I can always stick a few does later in the season after I have my buck tags filled.

All this action I can't believe why some people wonder why we hunt. Man, I love this stuff.
