Going to Montana!

Hey team just dropping in to tell you how I have November planned out! Well first off this weekend is the opener for rifle and that last for 2 more weekends after this one! If I fill my rifle tag and possibly my extra antlerless too I will be bowhunting whatever weekends are left. Then after those weekends on the 19th I will be going to Montana for a Mule Deer Doe! I won't be back till the 26th! grin.gif I have a very fun filled month!

Re: Going to Montana!

Well guys I had a great last day of hunting. Last night I saw 3 bucks, but no shooters and this morning I saw 9 different bucks!! We hunted two different locations, but that is a great sign that the rut is starting to happen. I have taken off work for part of next week to hunt, so hopefully I upgrade that doe in the next couple of days.

Re: Going to Montana!

Sorry I haven't been in lately team-mates.......I haven't even had the time to take the necessary pics to enter my buck in the contest......

Leroy_Trophy-4.JPG

He's got 14 scoreable points and should gross in the 158-160 range.......

Where do I start......let's just do a short version......I've known about this buck for 3 years.....I actually think he was a bit bigger last year, but had a perfectly tyypical frame then.....he had more charcter this year......

I started getting trail cam pics of him at the end of July......I shot right over his back, at 20 yards, Sept. 2nd !! blush.gif.........and then by stories end, I have nearly 250 trail cam pics of him, a 24 yards nearly broadside shot at last light October 28th......but I couldn't locate him for several hours with a flashlight, so I slipped out and spent a sleepless night at home till i found him first thing in the morning.......it didn't take me 5 minutes to find him....he had doubled back from the last direction I had seen him speeding off to......so he was actually on the oposite side of the creek from where I had been looking the night before.........

A tremendous buck, and a ton of fond memories.......

Now another note, I'm hoping my luck hasn't quite ran out for 2006, because I located a smoker of a buck to go after during rifle season.......I'm just hoping the road hunters, don't slop into him, before I get a chance to go after him........I threw out a couple of trail cams, so hopefully I have some pics in the next couple of days.......the one thing I did see, was tons of mass........never got a chance to count tines.......

Re: Going to Montana!

Congrats to both of you! Once again no deer for me for the weekend. frown.gif This rifle opener was not the greatest. The least amount of deer I have seen a lot of people take in awhile. My party came out with 1 buck shot by my friend Steve. It was 9 point. We'll be out this weekend again and I'll be trying to sit in that stand as long as possible. Its hard sitting all day though when your not seeing anything.Did get a good 20 hours in the tree though.

Re: Going to Montana!

Well guys tonight was a rough one. I've been hunting since Wed every day and I got my shot tonight at a nice 10 pointer. I thought he was at about 35 yards and shot him for that. Well he ended up being 46 after I ranged it later. I hit him in the front leg just below the body. He ran off about 40 yards and then came back in after the doe he was with b/c she didn't run. I never got that second shot and he ended up chasing her down into the woods farther. After the shot I couldn't understand what happened b/c even though the range was wrong my arrow was tracking perfect up until the hit. Once we saw where he was standing at we realized that the was brush right in front of him about 5 feet. I'm guessing my arrow had to deflect down and forward off that brush to make it hit him in the leg like it did. The reason I know it hit him in the leg is b/c I got my binoc's up and saw blood covering his right front leg. He bled for about 50 yards and then dried up. I'm pretty positive it wasn't fatal b/c he came back in after the doe and then ran her off and I watched him go. I'm about sick to my stomach right now even thinking about it. I won't be hunting until shotgun in a couple weeks b/c of other committments, but hopefully I will get a nice deer then. It's definitely frustrating to hunt that hard and then get the shot and have this happen. I passed through that frint leg b/c there was blood on all three veins of my arrow, but he did use that leg when he was going away. He didn't want to put weight on it at first, but he sex drive took over and he began to use it when going after the doe again. One positive note is that I have seen about 6 different shooter bucks including this one while hunting. He is the smallest of the 4 ten's and there are two 8's that are right around his size. This is by far the most shooters I have seen in one year of hunting. Let's hope I get to them before the neighbors do in shotgun.

Re: Going to Montana!

Hunted last night. Had a decent 8 pt come out about 75 yards away. Grunted at him and he circled around behind me. He was about 20 yards away but i couldnt get a shot with my bow.

Re: Going to Montana!

Hi gang; I'm home from the job for an extended weekend, then it's back to work again.

Looks like some interesting results lately. iminrut, beauty buck! struttinhoyt, you're having yourself quite a season; good going. Hoosier, tough break but maybe you'll run into him again. Good luck to all the rest of you who haven't had the opportunity to do much hunting yet. Staying tuned for more good news.

Re: Going to Montana!

Congrats on the doe Steve! Sorry guys, but this season isn't going as well as I planned at all. My rifle season is over and I've got nothing to show for it. A lot of the bucks are getting shot around my area. The 4 point I got a picture of last week was shot. 2 more bucks were shot across the road. The other neighbors got a "big buck". I'm starting to think that was tipster too. frown.gif Plus I only got one picture over the whole week again and it was a doe at 4 in the morning. I will be in Montana for 8 days so hopefully that goes really well and I can atleast get that Mule Deer doe for the team. I should be able to bow hunt possible a couple more weekends and the last week so I guess we'll see what happens. Good luck to everyone else.

Re: Going to Montana!

here's a pic of a little guy that came by the trail cam I just bought

trail_cam_022.jpg

This is a stealth cam 1.3....Trigger time is absolutely horrible on this camera I might add. It take about 2.5 seconds to trigger....It only was 100 bucks, but be prepared to get some frustrating pics of bucks walking away...

BTW this is a guy I passed on earlier this year.
