Re: The Lucky #13

Just thought I'd report in.

I've been kind of down the last couple days. Sunday evening, I shot a huge 8 pointer. 140 class deer. I botched the shot. 30 yards, hit him very very high. I watched him for over 10 minutes after the shot. Very calm, no blood on him, he did act hurt though. I got down, found my arrow, no blood, but all meat on the arrow, back strap. So I walked out and returned Monday evening with two friends. We did find some blood, but not much. We looked for 5 hours on Monday. I looked another 4 hours last night. Myself and the two who helped me have come to the conclusion that the buck is still walking, which is a good thing. We are extremely experienced trackers and we did all the text book stuff.

This is the first buck I've ever lost in 20 years of doing this. I've been pretty sick to my stomach over this and the only thing keeping me going is that I honestly think he'll be fine. I've been beating myself up pretty bad because I botched the shot. I preach and preach about patience and shot selection, yet I let myself rush the situation.

Good news is that there are several BIG bucks on my farm and the surrounding farms due to our QDM program. So, I know there will be other opportunities. I'll be back out there in a day or two chasing another big one.

Re: The Lucky #13

Honey hole, yea, pretty much. Look at this. These were in my area last year and a buddy just brought them into my office a little while ago.

These two bucks were found dead within 200 yards of each other about 1/2 mile from where I hunt. Many of us in this area practice a very regimented QDM program and we manage the area for good bucks. It is very unfortunate that these were lost. We have no idea how they died. The smaller of the two was found last spring and the larger one was found just last Thursday. One of my best friends who hunts the farm between my farm and the one that these were found on, just brought these into my office. I took these pictures and rough scored them less than an hour ago.

Great bucks, deserving to be the wall, not found rotted in a field.

The one on the left in the photos rough gross scored at 158, rough net 130. The one on the right, rough grosses at 133, rough net 129.

Two dang nice bucks. Unfortunately, they could not make it for this years seasons.

Derek don't beat your self up because it happens to everyone that hunts long enough. I shot a doe last year in what sounds like about the same spot. I seen what I thought was her later in the season and she appeared to be healthy.Deer are some very tough anamials and I'm pretty sure that the one that you shot will make it. As for you pictures It is a shame that two great bucks like that didn't make it. I think that I am going to go to Illinois this weekend and try my luck. Well good luck to yall. Later Cornbread

Re: The Lucky #13

I shot a big doe here in Illinois this morning at about 8 yards and it fell dead 28 yards from the stand. She was around 160 lbs. I have been seeing a good many bucks but no shooters. But I will be back in less than two weeks and it should be good. A deer just entered the corn field. I tell more about the trip later.

Re: The Lucky #13

Good activity on Saturday. Four different bucks at 10 yards or less. All small 1 1/2 year olds.

On Saturday night I had a nice 10 pointer about 50 yards from me working a scrape. I could not get him to come in to me though. Instead, he went over and thumped on a forkie that was working a scrape about 80 yards from me. Good deer. Had he come in, I probably would have shot him.

I had a pair of 6's fight right under me Saturday morning. Not sparring. They tore into each other. Awesome to watch.

Hey now, the smaller ones are harder to hit. I like a challenge. smile.gif

Actually, I get very selective about bucks, but when it comes to does, all are fair game. Big ones and small ones.

And yes, you are right, my yellow lab is bigger than she was. grin.gif

It is a sad day when your 7 year old daughter makes fun of you for shooting such a small doe. frown.gif

Re: The Lucky #13

Derek don't let them pick on you for shooting little does. They have three things that make them better to shoot. They taste better, they are harder to hit, and they are easier to drag. The deer that walked into the corn field the other night was about a 120" 8 pointer. I got about 15 mineuts of video of him in the field. When I have the time I will take the pictures from the video and post them. I also called in a coyote but he caught my wind before I could make the shot. Good luck. Cornbread

Re: The Lucky #13

Hey team, sorry I just got around to checking in. Looks like some of you are having a great year so far. I spent last weekend on the mule deer opener here in Utah. I have passed on a dozen bucks so far looking for a good one. I made a 4 hour stalk on wednesday and got within 50 yards of a 24" wide 22" tall 3pt (8pt eastern count). A truck spooked him off, but I am looking for a big one anyway. Right now it is snowing and I am headed back out tomorrow.

We did get a nice little 3x3 for my cousin on the opener.

Re: The Lucky #13

I hung a couple ladder stands today. Found several rubs scattered around the property, but none were very big. I put one stand at a new spot, which is a little further back on the property than the others. I probably won't hunt it until the 2nd or 3rd week of gun season. By that time, there is usually a ton of sign back in that area.

I didn't do any hunting this weekend, but I will go bowhunting at least once next weekend. Hopefully I'll see the buck/s that made all the rubs out there.

Re: The Lucky #13

I finally got around to taking pics from the video that i have taken this year. I carry a video camera to the woods everytime that I go. It makes for some great memories and some times you get pictures that you have to see to believe. The first pics are of the buck that entered the corn field when I was posting the other day from Illinois.

These next pictures are of a little buck that got an apple stuck in his mouth while in Missouri. It is some of my favorite video i have taken. To see the video is hilliourious. He had it stuck for about 2 min but i was laughing to hard and forgot about the camara so i only got about a min and a half of video. He does end up shaking it out. I bet he will never eat another apple.

The last one. Here is a buck that I had at 12 yards but he is just to small.

Hopefully i will have some more pictures to show later. I will be leaving for Illinois thursday and hopefully i willl be able to upgrade my buck from earlier this season. Well good luck every one and i will check back in later.

Re: The Lucky #13

Awesome pics Cornbred...Hey all im sorry i havent been on much but i havent forgot about the contest...Im sure i had you all worried...I have been out hunting just about every day, i took a nice doe which ill be posting pictures of as soon as i get them developed..I shot a 140 class 9 point a couple weeks ago, but my bow string caught my arm and ripped my sleeve so it through my shot off...im pretty sure it was just a flesh wound...i tracked tiny spots of blood for about a mile. then ran out of blood..the rut here in Illinois is kickin...a lot of bucks chassing doe's and they are responding to rattling and grunting quit a bit...well just thought i would give you the update....Good Luck everybody!
