He just would not come in so I could wack him he stayed about 75 yards out in the corn field. I'm going back to the same stand tonight so I'm hopeing that he will come by alittle closer. Good luck and happy bloods trails. Cornbread.
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: The Lucky #13 The woods has been on FIRE the past few days around here. Saturday evening, I had a basket 8 chasing does all over the field out in front of me. He had them all worked up. Sunday morning, I saw a small buck skirting a swamp, so I thought I'd mess with him and do some calling. A couple aggressive grunts and then a snort wheeze and he came in on a string. Small 6 pointer. He circled my stand and walked on. About 30 minutes later, I saw a BIG bodied deer moving through the thick swamp. I saw rack and put the calls to the test. Again, a few aggressive grunts got his attention, but the snort wheeze sealed the deal. He bought it hook, line, and sinker. Good deer, BIG body, not the rack I wanted. He's a heavy horned 6 pointer (main frame 8 w/ no brows). Good deer, but not what I want. He came right to me, circled me and went back to the other side of the swamp. When he got back to the other side of the swamp, I figured I'd have some fun with him and kept calling to him. Finally, after 20 years of hunting I finally heard a buck grunt. He grunted at me several times before giving up and leaving. I decided to take Monday off work and wow what a good choice that was. At about 7:30 am, I noticed a big buck about 100 yards from me. One look through the binos confirmed it was the big 6 from Sunday morning. He was dogging a couple does. The does came to a thicket about 40 yards in front of me. The big guy walked right under my stand just as the day before. He is an impressive deer, just not enough bone on the head for me. Then what happened over the next 3 hours I'll never forget. He stood in front of me from 15 to 20 yards for 3 hours, while that doe stayed in that thicket. What he did int that period has now changed what I once thought about deer vocalizations. I don't want to sound like a MADD or Primos spokesman, but trust me there is a growl or a roar or what ever you want to call it. That buck was pizzed and he wanted that doe like it was prom night and he'd just dropped a Ben Franklin on dinner and a tux. He let out four consecutive growls that started from deep in his gut, real low building and building until they finished off with a thundering roar. He was at 15 yards and I mean, I could FEEL it in my chest when he did it. I've never witnessed anything like it. He did it 4 times. And then the bucks all came in, just like in the MADD product promo video. The most aggressive buck to come in was a 7 pointer. He went right for the doe. Then the big 6 did what I never thought I'd witness. SNORT WHEEZE at that small buck. He was so close to me, I saw the spit fly when he did it. It was the coolest. So he ran the other bucks off and settled in with the doe. About an hour later, he did the deep growl again, two more times, and sure enough here came more bucks. Then another snort wheeze with some very aggressive lunges and he ran them off. INCREDIBLE action. I had that big 6 in visual range of me from 7:30 am until 4:00 pm yesterday. Mean while I lost count of all the smaller bucks and does I saw during the day. In all, I could have arrowed 5 different bucks yesterday. No does came close enough to offer a shot, but I wouldn't have taken one anyway. They were bait and I was betting on a real monster coming in. Unfortunately a monster never showed. Most incredible day deer hunting that I've ever had and I never even drew back.
Guest cornbread
Re: The Lucky #13 Derek that sounds like an awesome day hunting. The rut is wide open here in Illinois. I have seen shooter bucks everytime I have been the woods the last 3 days. Yesterday morning I had a shooter at 30 yards. He had came in from behind me and downwind and caught me off gaurd. As I was turning around and taking my bow off of the hook he knew something was not right and turned and walked away not offering a shot. Then yesterday evening I had a 125 ish 8 pointer walk down the edge of the corn field at about 15 yards but he is not the type of deer I'm after. I seen a total of 6 diffrent bucks last night one was right at dark and about 100 yards in the field. I could tell he was big but don't know how big. This morning before day light I had some chaseing going on but it was to dark to see. But the buck was grunting with every step. Then he stoped and snort weezed. That was the first time that I have ever herd that. But I have only seen one other deer this morning and he was a 135-140 eight pointer just crusing thru the field. I tryed to call him in and he started my way but when on his way. He never got with in 75 yards. Well good luck yall and happy blood trails. RDNKHNTR77
Re: The Lucky #13 man, sounds like everyone is havin some exciting times in the woods this yr. my story from last weekend isnt quite as exciting, but it was nice to just get out. i sat on stnd till 10:30 and saw nothing, and i had to leave to go to our football game. then, as i am walkin back, i kick up 3 does in some thick pines. then i look to the left about 40 yds. and there is another big doe just standing there. she is about 60 yds away from me and behind a tree. the wind was right so i decided to try a little stalk. got to within 40 yds and she decided to start walking, but amazingly she came right for me!!! she was in some thick stuff and i saw one small shooting lane and grunted at her as soon as she stepped into it. shot, and all i hear is a "snap", DANGET, hit a branch. i went and looked and there was about the smallest branch in the woods snapped off. pretty pissed, but thats y they call it hunting, not killing
lil hunter
Re: The Lucky #13 I didn't go hunting today. Had a football game a few hours away last night, and didn't get back home til 3:30 this morning. I probably won't go out tomorrow either. My dad went out to our hunting property this morning, just looking around some, and said he found a couple really big scrapes. Gun season opens next weekend, so I should have a decent chance to kill one this year.
PAbowhunter4life
Re: The Lucky #13 On my way to my morning spot yesterday I had a MAMMOTH of a buck, 170" or better easy, dog a doe acrosss the dirt road in front of me. Things were looking promising to say the least. Well, set up by 5:40 a.m., sat till 11 in the pouring rain and saw nothing but squirrels. Went home, dried out a little bit and grabbed some grub, back in the woods by 2 p.m. and sat till dark . At 3:45 p.m. in the midst of another quagmire I happen to look up and out of nowhere a nice 8 point appears at 22 yards. Not one of the beasts I wanted, but no dink either, a well deserved trophy on a day like yesterday if you ask me. He steps behind 2 trees, I draw and anchor focusing to the right of the tree where I will get my shot.......2 more steps......... 2 more steps that he never takes. Instead of heading straight, he veers up the hill in to some thick crap and out of my life lol. On my way back to my car I kicked up 2 doe bedded about 50 yards from where I parked. On another note, the season ended exactly how it began, me sitting in a down pour looking forward to things to come. I'm not done with the bow yet this year, I'm a get us some points
lil hunter
Re: The Lucky #13 anyone have any luck this weekend? I passed on a couple small bucks. I about shot one this morning, but his rack was all messed up so I didn't shoot. I will probably shoot him if he comes by again though. I also saw some does, but they were all really small. I think I saw 5 different does this morning, and I know none would have been over 80-90 pounds.
Bow Hunter Derek
Re: The Lucky #13 I guided a buddy to a good one. I really did not hunt that much. I'm in kind of a state of depression now that it is gun season. I just enjoy bow season. I'm out to get my daughter on a deer now. I'll start hunting for myself again in a few days. Bow Hunter Derek
Re: The Lucky #13 How's it going team. Big bucks have become scarce here since the gun season opened. I shot another doe the other day, but I've not seen a good buck in two weeks. Lots of little ones. Still holding out for a big one and I won't compromise. How's everyone else doing? Guest cornbread
Re: The Lucky #13 Congrats on the doe. I'm back in Illinois for the second shotgun season. I'm hunting right now and have seen 6 deer with one of them being a monster but was way out of range of my Encore. I could have killer a 120" 8 point this morning about 15 mineuts after daylight but he is just to small. It is sleeting right now and supposed to turn to snow and snow about a foot tonight. For a southern boy like me its cold. Well I will keep yall updated on what's going on and good luck yall. Cornbread
lil hunter
Re: The Lucky #13 I have seen 4-5 different bucks so far this season. My dad missed a pretty nice 8 pointer, and he is still around too. I should have a decent chance at shooting an ok buck this year, or at least a doe. I could've killed a little 5 pointer today, but passed on him and several does. I will be back out tomorrow though.
RDNKHNTR77
Re: The Lucky #13 heres my doe from the second day of shotgun. i must have seen 20 opening day, but got no good shots. about 8:00 the second day i was on stand and three doe came wandering straight up the hill towards me. the biggest one stepped into a clearing at about 50 yds and i dropped her with one booming shot from the ol 870. hopefully ill have an upgrade come muzzleloading

Bow Hunter Derek
Re: The Lucky #13 Congrats guys. Lil, I saw your post over at the Refuge, congrats. Too bad others had to use your thread to wage a war against each other. I shot another doe this weekend. Makes 3 for the year. No antlers that I want to shoot yet, but I'm doing my QDM part on the does.

Guest cornbread
Re: The Lucky #13 Congrats lil and derek on the deer. Well I ate a tag sandwitch so the second season in Illinois. After about 14 inches of snow the deer hearded up and went to standing food sources. I guess they didn't want to stick there nose in the snow. I couldn't blame them. I know that you northern fellas are used to the cold but for a southern redneck like me it was way to cold. It was 3 degrees one morning and 1 another. I'm sorry that I have not checked in lately but I finally had to get back to reality and go back to work. I was off for about 3 1/2 weeks. And never had the oppertunity at the huge buck that I was after. Dekek it is sure fun wacking does. It is one of my favorite things to do. I have been hunting some with my girlfriends 7 year old son. It is more fun to just watch him experiance it all for the first time. The first morning that we went we saw 14 deer and a little buck chaseing a doe. It was an awesome morning and I think he is hooked for life. Well our season ends on january first and I don't know if I will make it out again this year with christmas and new years just around the corner. Well I have really enjoyed being on yalls team and I wish yall the best of luck for the rest of the season. Later. Cornbread
