Tony
Re: Update - Team 14 - Double 7\'s congrats Roy on your deer. maybe a buck is in the future for you. spent all day on stand today. from 6:05am to 5:15 pm. man was it cold or what. that wind sure didnt help much. action was hot and almost right from daylight to just about dark. i saw 7 bucks, 6 does and 2 im not sure of, because i jumped them in the dark. no bucks even worth mentioning. a nice 8 point was chasing a doe around, but i think she had been bred already. i got to see my 3 point buddy beat up on a 5 point that thought he was bad. that little 3 point pushed and shoved the 5 point right into submission. they spent about 25 min at 25 yards pushing and shoving. what a show. then i had to laugh out loud at this poor little buck. he had a weird rack. his main beams went straight up and then forked. his brow tines were about 5 inches and they went straight up. but the funniest thing was he only had 3 inches of tail left .. im laughing so hard right now... he caught me moving and when he went to leave he whipped that little 3 inch tail up and i laughed so hard i thought i had spooked every deer in the county. other than the turkeys spooking deer and the crazy squirrels going nuts i had a fun day on stand. im back at it again tomorrow in a differant location about 1/2 a mile away. Tony
Re: Update - Team 14 - Double 7\'s i blew it this morning. i had a heavy wide 10 point coming right in and when he got about 60 yards out, he must have winded me. he stopped and sniffed around and then went back the way he came. this stand has produced my doe. since i hadnt been winded yet, i figured it was ok. i expect the bucks to come from either east or south east. when i set this stand i was more setting it for location to cover an area. i forgot to set it up for the predominant wind this time of the year which is north or north west. it made me pretty mad that i lost the opportunity on a 160 class buck simply becuase i didnt pay attention. so i moved the stand to the downwind side of the trail they use and now i have just one more morning to hunt before i go home to Ohio for all next week. the week after that i have to hunt, but our shotgun season starts dec 2nd and runs until the 17th. then i will be back at it during late season. i still might kill a good buck there yet. i think this will make a great late season stand. sorry if this is just ranting. does and small bucks you can get a way with a lot, big mature bucks you cant get away with anything. craig mack
Re: Update - Team 14 - Double 7\'s Well guys I just got back from my 2 week trip from the U.P. It was a fun trip as always. I shot a 6 point with my bow on the 10th. The activity was good at first and then it died down once rifle season started on the 15th. We have a pack of coyotes there that was messing everything up. I seen a coyote about 6 of the 11 days I hunted, spooking deer from my stand 2 of those times. The does were freaking out. My Dad and a friend of ours is still up there, I hope they can score. I will post some pics soon.
NiteRunner
Re: Update - Team 14 - Double 7\'s Sorry to hear about the Tony! Would have loved to see you get your hands on that guy! Craig, Congratulations!!! Can't wait to see the Pics! I Hate Coyotes, better get the shotgun for those. Here's how my Youth Season Went, First Day we didn't have much activity and didn't see a whole lot either. I Did have a button buck come past at 10 feet but I was hoping for something else. Sorry! Day 2, Chased 8 or so out of a woods but no shooters. So we did another part and had 4 come out, 2 bucks and 2 does. The biggest buck was a getting there 6-8 Point. Than we tried another spot and 2 Does had gone out to a little strip of woods so my Dad told me to get to the other side of it and he would come through it, but doubted anything would lay there. I made it to the other side and I see a big body standing 75-100 yards away. I crouched down and started slowing inching forward to get to the field. Whether they saw me or my Dad I'm not sure but 4 started breaking across the field. At Least 2 bucks and the one was nice. But no shot. Then aways down the field another Buck broke out across the field and I could see he had something up there, but how good I don't know. We tried to get after those 4 but no luck. After that it was pretty slow. I can't exactly Promise that I'll add points team, but Gun season comes in next week and I can get a Doe for sure and still be able to hunt for a buck. The reason I didn't shoot this Youth Season was because youth are only allowed one deer that week-end, so I made the choice to hold out. Tony
Re: Update - Team 14 - Double 7\'s been hunting a lot each day. wind has been just super bad and warm on monday and tuesday. then it got cold and windy. wed and thursday and today. i have been seeing lots of deer. thursday evening i saw 1 buck and 4 does and almost froze my butt. it was the coldest i have ever been. today i spent all day on stand. temp this morning was -2 with the wind chill. the wind died down and it actually got a little warmer the rest o fhte day. my gear i was weasring was greta and my toes got a little cold , but them larger hand warmers saved me. along with a little trail mix and some water and i was pretty warm all day. i cant believe my luck. a really nice 150 class 8 point came in today. he was on the north side of the creek. he came to the creek crossing and if they cross there they come right to the logging trail and right past my new stand location. but as luck has it he wouldnt cross that creek. the ice on it was cracking to loud and i guess it was to hard for him to jump it. he tried for 5 mins to try and cross , but then went up the bank and traveled 80 yards to a smaller spot for him to cross. guess where it lead to. right below where i had this stand before. if i had this stand in the old spot he would have walked right by at 23 yards. but i guess that the way it goes. i had a lot of deer walk by the rest of the day. saw 8 does and 5 bucks. a nice little 10 point bedded down not 60 yards away and gave me a chance to watch a buck for a long time. he was there for 6 hours. i was amazed at how he changed position as the sun was shining on him. it was like he was getting some sun, but he was always alert to any sound. i grunted a couple of times to gauge his reaction and he heard it and stared in my direction. but never saw me. this buck if he survives this season will be a dandy next year. he has a lot of mass and is probably a 130 class 2.5 year old. bow season is over until the 18th of dec. im going to buy some boot blankets and maybe one of the old time hand warmers that use fuel to keep warm with. looks like i have the whole week off for Xmas. so i will be hunting my butt off trying to fill me buck tag with bow. sasksheds
Re: Update - Team 14 - Double 7\'s I am done for the year.I shot a nice whitetail buck yesterday. We saw 2 bucks running a doe in a big slough bottom. We had a shot @ the one out about 400 yds broadside.Boom he went down & my buddy was done. Then we saw the bigger one break out with the doe. After we loaded my buddy's we went to look for the big guys tracks in the snow.We bumped into a muley doe & my other freind tagged her.Back again & we got on the big bucks line.It didnt take long & we found him bed down in a coulie. It was pretty cool to see him laying there.I had to be careful cause he was acting like a dumb muley buck.Confirmation came from the man behind the binocs & BOOM! Big Buck Down!!! The doe then bolted from the buck brush & went over the hill. Then the work started. We dragged her up the hill a bit then tied a 100ft rope to her & let the truck do the rest.It was -37'C here with the wind chill when I got home.I think it was colder when we left in the morning. We got stuck on our way home & had to get a tow-truck to get us out.I have pics but they are on my freinds camera.I will post them ASAP.He is a 5x5 with a split brow & a sticker coming out the back on the left side.So 5x7. NiteRunner
Team 14 - Double 7\'s - 140\" / 150\" Buck Congrats all on the Deer so far! The Week Long Ohio Gun Deer Season, was slow for me. Here's a Run Down of it. Day 1, It was still dark outside when my Dad came into the house to get me and say "Theres one in the yard!" Lol Yep there was! Little fawn hanging out by our Pine trees, Don't know where it got to though. Just myself and my Dad out hunting the first day and I was a stander while my Dad was driving. Fairly good sized woods for one person to drive but my Dad came through it anyway. Not long into the drive a small 6-8 Point came walking past at 25 yards, could have taken a shot but I didn't, let those little boys walk. Well, BOOM! BOOM! Someone behind me, which I didn't know they were there, shot. I don't know if they got him though. Well little later another little guy comes out, looked to be a different one with just main beams, again I don't shoot but this one was further out anyway. Well, BOOM! Someone else shoots from across the woods! And then someone else Let's out 3 Shots at him! Sheesh, got out of there. Pretty much took care of day 1 Day 2, Nothing for most of the day! So I drive out a swamp/brush spot of ours near closing time. Get almost done with it and I come across a bed, looked old though. But I wasn't thinking and should have felt it to see if it was warm or not. Lesson learned. Finished and still no shot from my Dad. Get out there and he tells me I pushed out a nice little buck, said he'll be a shooter if he makes it to next year. I was happy to hear that I was able to get something out at least. Day 3, It's early morning just light enough to see aways. There standing near a row of pines is a Buck. A Nice one too. I get the Binocs on him and wow what a nice one! 140"-150" of antler on top of close to 200 pounds. Your waiting for me to say that I have my sights on him and ready to trip the Trigger right? I Wanted to!!! But we seen this Beauty while driving to our spot, and unfortunately he was on A Golf Course, Which naturally doesn't allow hunting. Anyone have a Golf Bag I can barrow? : Went to a bigger block, and seen 2 Does out in the field. So my Dad tries hooking around to see if he can bring them to me through some Pines. Standing a while and okay here them come. Trotting along...But darn I just can't get a bead on them. Wait here comes one walking, much easier shot there. Gun Up... Coming into view at 20 yards, still walking. And Shoot! lol It was a Small pencil thick 3 point. Gun down and yep he just stands there, not knowing I'm there or nothing. Let him go passed. And that pretty much summed that up. Friday, High Winds blew in just after noon, but we went to the woods anyway. We pulled into our spot and I said "No Way, not in this wind". Trees were bending so much it was not funny. We drove around the block and it looked as if the wind died down some, so why not, after all you can't get'm if you don't go. We got about half way in and I couldn't take it no more, I was nervous. We left and on our way home there was a Pine Tree, the kind you seen on Bonanza...Snapped at the base. I mean you can't even wrap your hands around it, just snapped like that across the road. No one was hurt. We get home and yep Power is out, that Pine downed the wire, knocking out 200 something houses. Turns out the wind was up to 60 MPH! Fast Forward to Saturday, Plenty of aftermath from the storm in the woods. Trees down, etc. We seen deer behind our house in the field so my Dad takes me around and drops me off were they should come through. Waiting, Waiting, Finally I seen them, 6 looks like. One is a Buck too. But...their 75 Yards away from me, Suck! And they spook out toward the road. I wait for my Dad to come through and I see a small Doe coming at me. Gun up I take aim but she stops 30 yard out looking at me. Most of her shoulder is in front of a tree, I waited. All I needed was one more step. But she's getting nervous. Not the best shot but I take it. Nailed The TREE! So she takes off. And after she got away my Dad has me drive the same swamp that I got the buck out of. Which is right across the road, and we thought the 6 or so deer may have went that way. So a dogging I go. And wait I see something at the field edge. It's a Hunter, in Full CAMO! What the? Is he crazy or what? 300" of Blaze Orange is required in Ohio, I couldn't believe he'd be out there in Camo. But he left ASAP seeing me coming. I pushed the little Doe out, that I missed, to my Dad and he dropped her! Then later my Mom tagged one. Remember TED? The deer that escaped from the Neighbors deer pen? That would be her. Haven't heard from the neighbor... Last Day, First Drive I see a Fox or Coyote too far for a shot. Well so my Dad drives a small brush spot and here comes the Coyote... Coming right at me... I have waited ALL Year for this shot, and he comes to 30 Yards and stops to look at me. I wanted him to come closer but it doesn't appear that he will. So I take the shot. MISS! SUCK! He's trotting off now, Shot Again, MISS! I was So mad at myself, I wanted that coyote down so bad! Well then almost time to close the season my Dad tried one more drive. And I seen 3 Does coming my way. This is it, 30 yards out the big Doe passes into a opening and stops, I raise the gun, but one fawn steps in beside her. Drat! Well there's another lane I'll wait. And the Doe passes by quickly, but the fawn starts to move in it. I shoot. THe Fawn reacts with a High Kick of it's rear legs, bringing them to it's shoulder, before bounding off with momma. I see my Dad come through minutes later and walk straight to where I shot. Blood. There's also a Chunk of bone. I was pretty sure the shot was good from the fawns actions, but the blood didn't last long. We lost it in a field, but picked it back up in the woods on the other side. Few drops, little splatters, not much. We followed but light was fading, and so was the blood. It was looking like a good trail for a minute, but reduced to small drops. My Dad thinks I may have hit it in the leg. I felt bad for it, I don't know if it lived or not. We looked around in bedding spots and such, but no luck. There's still a extra week-end out there for me, 16-17th, I'll try then. And Muzzle loader. And the rest of Bow.... I'm trying to stay optimistic...! NiteRunner
Re: Double 7\'s - Got A Doe Thanks Sasksheds! We drug her 10 yards before my Dad said we were going to get the truck! Lol Never got her weighed though, she was a big ol' girl. Still have Muzzle Loader and the rest of Bow to find the Buck with my name on it. Here's the Story, Got her Sat. during the Extra Weekend Thanks to the ODNR. My Dad had left shortly before to make a drive down to me when I heard the dry leaves crunching, but I couldn’t place where the sound was coming from or see any movement in front of me. I heard it again and turned around to look behind me, it was a Doe and Fawn at 40 yards and still slowly coming my way, but they were cautious and looking around. They were coming up on my right so I waited until they started moving to turn for a shot. Finally after a couple minutes the Doe was in an opening, but passed through kind of quick so I moved to the next opening and she was in it in no time, so I pulled the trigger. She dropped in her tracks! Neck Shot, not what I had in mind, but it worked none the less... But talk about trying to make me feel guilty afterwards. The Fawn that was with it, ran right up to me and stopped at 15 yards and started bleating at me. It stood there for a couple minutes doing it too. In that time I noticed there were other deer coming up from behind me also. They must have been with the Doe I shot. It looked like another Big Doe, one from last year that we had seen, she has a White Spot on her side so she's pretty Identifiable. So her and 2-3 more Fawns took off back down into the woods and the one in front of me followed also, but came back afterwards.
