Re: Team 24

Cold here in Illinois this week. I had frost again this morning when I headed out to work. Won't get a chance to hunt again until Sat though.

I've been trying some out of the way places, hoping to find where one of the big boys lives. No luck so far. I have seen a number of smaller bucks and does. I'll whack one soon I hope.

Good luck all!

Re: Team 24

Should have been a perfect afternoon here yesterday, temps were falling and the sky cleared. Got out late after going to the kids pt conferences at the schools, and had a 4 pointer come in just perfect within about 10 minutes of me getting up and settled in my stand.

He walked the trail I had expected the deer to use, fed across our winter food plot stopped at 38 yards and then made his way through the brush pile off into the field where our bigger plot is at.

Kept hoping a better buck would come through and follow behind him, right at last shooting light heard a crash in the woods after hearing a deer blow just within maybe a minute or so earlier off to my southwest off on another property. Pretty sure it was the same 4 pointer came running out through the plot at full speed and rounded the brush pile. Not sure what had this deer spooked, wind was barely blowing and was from the southwest, was perfect for this stand. Every once in a while when the wind would stop would hear some guys talking in the direction from where I heard the deer blow from. Guessing they bumped him or maybe possibly shot at him.

Hoping things will be a little better this weekend.

Re: Team 24

Popped a doe Sat. evening right at last light around 30 yards. Hit the liver and one lung and she was tough to find a blood trail for the first 50 yards. The arrow had a cloudy blood look, so I figured I had hit the liver. It took me an hour to track her the first 50 yards, the last 30 yards about 15 seconds. If I would have had a regular AA flasthlight, I'm not sure If I would have found her.

I did pass on a very small 5 ptr. in the morning at 15 steps as there are better bucks in the area...Now if it was in Dec. I would have smoked him lol....

Re: Team 24

Had a yearling doe with bow in hand release clipped on ready to draw with a perfect quartering away shot at 46 yards Sunday morning. A little too far, and just not really what I am after.

Saw two 1.5 year old bucks Saturday morning and had them both well within range. Have only had opportunities on 4 different 1.5 year old bucks so far this season, but have not seen any other bucks yet. Not even getting any pics of any on better bucks our cams right now.

Saturday afternoon had a group of 4 does come through, closest one a good mature was about 15 yards away to my right, could not get drawn out of my ladder stand across my body. They eventually worked on around in front of me two of them within 20 yards, but was too dark to see my pins by then, and probably beyond legal shooting hours.

Cannot complain I dont guess, at least I am seeing deer.

Re: Team 24

Way to go Broncho and 13..

I thought my weekend would have been a bit better with this cold front coming in. The only deer I seen this weekend was driving to the back of the property at lunch Saturday to check a Trail cam.. Since the acorns have started to drop these guys are not moving out of the heavy woods to the feeders or water..I will try again next weekend...

At least we did get some badly needed rain wink.gif

Its bad around here still...It can rain for a week and it wont help the area lakes..

The main lake that Dallas and most of the surrounding cities get there water is Lake Lavon, 2 weeks ago it was 65% depleted..thats over 18' below normal level..

Re: Team 24

Well I have good news and bad news, on the opening day of muzzleloader season I shot a nice doe, the bad news is by the time I thought of it I did not get any pictures of the deer and tag. There is no need to worry though we do a real strict doe take on our property and I have plenty of does and more tags to fill with the riffle so I will make sure to take pictures with the next doe that I get. Congrats to everyone else that has gotten deer. Riffle season starts here this saturday so hopefully that goes well. grin.gif

Re: Team 24

Well guys I blew it this morning. Kicking myself in the hind end right now. He was either an 8 or a 10. Not sure if he had brows or not, but had 4 points for sure on his right side not counting the brow.

Had 2 shooter bucks, 3 youngs bucks come in late this morning, I was about to get down. The first two out were 1.5 year olds. Had the good 3.5 year old buck with probably an 18 inch outside spread at about 26 yards waiting for him to step into an opening, and had my bow drawn and the pin settled in right behind the shoulder with him broadside and the 1.5 year old 4 pointer standing in the wide open in front of him must have spotted me. Will post the full story in the bowhunting forums sometime later when I get a chance.

Think I will try the same spot this afternoon, wind is supposed to be abou the same as this morning.

Re: 24 - Antler Addicts

Ole slughunter is Hot...

Passed on that 5ptr. agiain Sat. evening.

Hit a doe this morning and shot low on her, but it looked like a great shot when it hit ......NOT!

The Blood didn't look right on my arrow but she was leaving a great blood trail so I moved on....As I am trailing her (70 yrds.) I could tell the blood was clotting, then all of a sudden it all starts to look fresh..... thinking utoh..... I look 100 yards down the ridge and there is a deer standing on top... up goes the white flag with some high bounces down the hill, she stops at the creek, wiggles her tail and goes up a 100 foot steep hill... I was thinking, no way that was the deer I shot, she looked to happy..... So I followed the trail and sure enough it was.... Stopped took an hour nap and moved on.. She went down another big hill up another with a drop every 10 yards, think she will be ok....

I must have hit her just behind the front shoulder and very low as she was quartering away not hitting any vitals..

And all that practice I did this year...Good Grief!

Re: Team 24

Yesterday, Oct -21-2006, the story

I went out to my grandpas early. We decided to drive out some of the small woods in my area. my grandpa drove 2 woods to me and nothing came out then I drove 2 woods out to him with only a couple of does running past him, he decided to let them go. So after those drives there was about half an hour of shooting time left. He drove to the area where out platform stand was but I was soaking wet and told him I was gonna walk the rest of the way home. (only half a mile). I decided to walk on the edge of a soy bean feild by a pinetree woods. as Im walking on the edge I notice some new rubs and scrapes that werent there 3 hours ago when we drove by. so I keep walking then I look back in the woods and notice a buck looking at me. so I raise my sluggun, aim, and fire. The buck goes down, and I am cheering like crazy. I walk up behind him and poke him with my gun, but he wasnt done, he lifted his head and tried to get his footing, it scared the daylights out of me, so I shot him again to finish him off. I then called my grandpa and he was over there in no time giving me high fives and hugs. I am so happy I got him, havent got a buck since 2004.

here are pics of the rack, sorry I dont have pics of the whole deer, there on our other digital camera, those will come soon:
