HarvDog
Re: Cold weather headcovers I just picked up one of the UA cold weather hats but haven't really used it yet. I'll have to let you know.
Mach1
Re: Cold weather headcovers My brother has a CamoSkins headcover he uses and likes it. I usually wear a ballcap with a wool or fleece stocking cap over it or just the stocking cap and a fleece neck gaiter I pull up over my face. It keeps me feeling warm. OUTSIDER
Re: Cold weather headcovers Before you even look this one up its expensive. Its a brand called Mountain Hardwear. They are a company that specializes in mountaineering and backpacking, they have a beanie thing you could get, its goretex and has some some of wind stopping stuff. They dont make camo, but if you are really talkin about cold weather and warm stuff, they have the stuff. They also have a great line of possible layers for your hunting clothes, fleese and stuff like that. Check em out, but hold on to your wallet. wtnhunt
Re: Cold weather headcovers My 3 in 1 super slam parka has a thinsulated hood, what I wear when it gets really cold. I like how warm it keeps my head, but dont like how it cuts down what I can hear.
buffett1
Re: Cold weather headcovers I just use a fleece neck gaitor that I can pull up over my nose and ears when that wind really starts to howl and it works pretty well. RangerClay
Re: Cold weather headcovers I have worn a Quaker Boy 3/4 cold weather mask for years and I love it. Unfortunately it is wearing out and they don't make it anymore. I bought THIS and I am going to try it out for the first time this fall. unioncountyslayer
Re: Cold weather headcovers Doesn't get too terribly cold down here, but I usually just wear a Carhartt tobogin (sp?) and a fleece gator.

The baclava is very warm and pretty resonable, I think I got mine for about $15.
toddyboman
Re: Cold weather headcovers i have the ua head cover made of their cold gear stuff. I really like it. It does fit tight but it stops the wind so it keeps ya warm.
hunterfisherman
Re: Cold weather headcovers I use the under armour head cover and when it gets really cold I put a fleece headcover over it. This setup always keep my head toasty

Hoosierbuck
Re: Cold weather headcovers I just can't stand to have my ears totally covered unless it's just so darn cold you have to, like single digits. I love my Stormy Kromer hats, they have a bill to keep snow and such off my glasses, a band that pulls down to cover the tops of your ears, and they are wool and very fashionable. Strut10
Re: Cold weather headcovers I have a fleece beanie and I'll just pull the hood (Walls Weather-Pruf) of my jacket up over it. That keeps me plenty warm down to the zero range. Below that, I have a polyester-knit balaclava. I still pull it off when a deer's coming. Messes up my anchor point. Ravin R10 man
Re: Cold weather headcovers I use my Scent Blocker hood, and if it's cold to where I need more, I wear a knit cap, and if its real cold, I will go to a fleece neck gaitor and a fleece baclava(sp)? craig mack
Re: Cold weather headcovers If you bow hunt, make sure you practice with the face mask you buy. I use a base layers face mask and a camo face mask over that. Both are thin and fit tight to my face. I got one that is a little thicker for when its really cold. GWSmith
Re: Cold weather headcovers I've got 2 large double layer nylon with thinsulate Knit Beanie style hats. The first day after they got home I cut the seam that runs acrossed on the top of one of them so it basically became a tube. I slide that one down over my neck area then put the other one on the ol'noggin. I can pull the bottom one up and the top one down in the back and cover my neck and ears completely. To me it does not make too much sense to leave my ears exposed so that I can hear slightly better(in that kind of weather) if I have to rub them to stay warm...it kinda defeats the purpose of standing still. Works like a charm for me! 17 degrees plus the wind chill last year and hunting the hills I was very warm...reached up and found that there was Ice formed on the outside of the rolled up brim on the top hat I never would have known it was there my head was that warm! Thats after having stopped and setup at a standsite for a couple hours!
yooperkenny
Re: Cold weather headcovers Here's what I do during late season up here in the cold of Michigan's UP - you really need the fleece neck gaitor for starters. Then I wear a fleece facemask, one with eye and nose openings like these guys make: http://www.reliableofmilwaukee.com/php/headwear.php Then some sort of knit or wool hat on top of your head over the facemask. If it's really cold, then the hood of my parka goes up - it really helps to hold the heat in. The Mountain Hardwear tip is good - I have a black "gorilla mask" from Outdoor Research that has windstopper - if it's below zero wind chill I sometimes wear that under the fleece facemask. This along with synthetic baselayers, layers of polartec and wool, a handwarmer muff, good socks and boots, and lots of heatpacks will allow you to stay out when everyone else has gone back to the cabin and you're out there alone with the DEER!
