Youth Season

Our youth season opened a week ago.Austin, my 11 year old and I started off with high hopes, I knew where 3 huge bucks were at, gained permission for 3 properties, set up stands and blinds and started off focusing on them.3 days ago we learned another youth hunter had shot one of them and the other two had relocated to a 1100 acre slough west of us.The buck the youth shot was the smallest one of the 3, a big 9 pointer with a drop tine and a wieght of 240 lbs according to the scale at the elevator, they had to drag him out with an ATV.

Learning the other two werent on the property any longer and the fact that we were leaving this weekend limiting the days he had to hunt we switched gears and moved to a spot with more does. After having two seperate occassions where the does came within range but spotted us and never offered a shot Sunday morning I decided to try something different.I pulled out a grass matt used for waterfowl hunting I had bought last year at Walmart on clearance me and Austin spent the morning turning the 4ft by 4 ft matt into a lightwieght portable blind for hunting the edge of the switchgrass and cornfields we were using.

We went out Sunday afternoon, set it up and blended it in with some of the surrounding vegetation{thanks for the inspiration Buckee grin.gif}It worked almost to well, about 45 minutes before dark we heard branches breaking in the grove to our left.It quieted down again and I honestly thought a person was walking through it making the noise, I was on the verge of telling Austin we were going to have to leave when the grass to my left started rustling. Not 10 ft from us two does stepped out.I tapped Austin on the leg and he nodded that he saw them.Unfoutanately I was between Austin and the deer and he had no shot, being that close I figured we were going to be busted in a few seconds. The big doe lifted her head up and looked over at the blind, then went back to eating, she did that 2 or 3 times over the next couple minutes but apparently it blended in well enough she noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Finally they started moving off away from us and Austin was able to get his gun up on his bipod an get the barrel out the window I had cut in the mat.He aimed and aimed for what seemed like forever but they were facing away from us and offered him not shots. Finally at the top of the hill about 40 yards away they turned broadside and he got his gun on the bigger doe.The sun was setting directly behind them and made seeing very hard, from where we were at it appeared the small doe was in front of the bigger one, he pulled the trigger and the bigger doe wheeled around, ran back towards us and into the grove, the smaller one i didnt pay much attention to as she only ran about 10 yards and stopped to look around.I thought he had missed and was going to tell him that when the doe in front of us tipped over, he shot the wrong doe grin.gif

We decided to give her a few minutes and started getting things packed back up when I noticed movement in front of us.Again, the blind worked so well that the skunk directly on the other side of it about 3 ft from us never knew we were there, which was a very good thing. To make a long story short Austin had to sneak up and put another shot into her to finish her off after the skunk left but he did it quite well and kept his head when dealing with the wounded doe.Tonight were going to have fresh backstraps for supper grin.gifwink.gif
