The 2 Minute Hunt **Pics**

gun season here in Ohio opened up last monday. every year people here at school come up to me and say things like "you going out?" "i thought you'd be hunting today" and "did you get one yet?" and my answer is always the same "i'm not a gun hunter. sometimes i'll push my field after the deer have been pressured, but i prefer to bowhunt." and then they all say the same thing. "oh, that's right" tongue.gif

anyway, one of my buddies here at school who owns a 10 acre field where we dove, rabbit and pheasant hunt comes up to me and says "so, you going out this week?" smirk.gif and i said my usual response, then i said, "you know, i'll bet you have deer laying in your field towards the end of the week." and he said "yeah, we saw some beds when we hunted the field over Thanksgiving Day weekend, you're welcome to push it if you want." and i said "ok, maybe i'll do that, i'll bring you some slugs so you can help me." (he's never hunted deer before) so Ed says "sounds good!"

Friday rolls around and he came to me and says "you still want to push my field?" and i said "sure, i brought my gun." so off we went.

when i got to his house and got out of the truck we had the worst possible wind, it was blowing our scent right into his field. so we sat and strategized a bit and he came up with an idea. (funny how non-deer hunters think), and i said "no, that won't work. here's what we need to do....." so we got the plan all set and basically quick stepped it out to the field. (i told him you have to go fast, if you sneak, the deer see you a long way off and run too far out for a shot). we got into position for the push Ed to the west, me to the east, we were about 50 yards apart. 30 yards into the push i heard a shot and looked over to ed. sure enough a decent buck was laying in there and it was running straight away from ed. his first shot missed, i got my gun 1/2 way up, made a mental note of the house 300 yards distant noting that i had no shot until if and when the buck would clear the house. well, it didn't matter because Ed's second shot rang out and the deer went down like a ton of bricks. it looked like a shoulder or heart shot to me. Ed started celebrating "i got it, i got it!!!" i yelled over to him "check your safety and get up on him!" i've seen too many deer get up and run off after a supposed "kill" shot.

When Ed got to the deer he yells "it's a 10 point!" by the time i got over to him he's standing astonished, in total shock. the deer gave one final kick, and was done. the slug entered 2" below the right ear and exited out the left ear (wonder what he was aiming at? grin.gif)

anyway, i was pretty happy for him, believe it or not. grin.gif

funny how things go sometimes eh?

here's the pics. i taped him with a carpenter's tape measure and came up with 139 typical. the deer is a typical 10 with a split left brow tine and a little sticker at the base of the right main beam. here's the rest of the scores, left, then right:

main beams are 23"

inside spread 16"

G-1s = 6" and 4"

G-2s = 7"

G-3s = 10 and 10 1/2"

G-4s = 4" and 2" (the right was busted off) frown.gif

circumferences both left and right are 6", 5", 4" and 3"

very symmetrical buck except for the brows and the busted G-4 on the right.

congratulations again Ed, couldn't happen to a better guy (unless it was me) grin.gif

Hey it has happened to some of us too. The 2nd rack buck I ever killed (I was a teenager) was, 1st shot through the edge of the ear, 2nd shot though the head. I was looking at the same thing Ed was looking at.

You made that look waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too easy Chris.

Congrats to Ed. Very nice buck. Congrats to you for bringing another deer hunter in the ranks and helping him drag too. grin.gif

BTW, If you were wondering, there was color TV back in my teenager days too but no video games. wink.gif

Boy, you got some kind of luck! Take a guy hunting (even if it is his land) and they kill a good'n. I'm sure Ed was happy, and I know you're just as happy for him. One of these days you'll get your buck and I hope it's a big'n!

Congratulations to Ed! Was that his first deer?

Congrats to you also for "showing him the ropes"!

yep, first deer. first time ever hunting them, for that matter.

like i said, i'm very happy for him. he kept saying "can you believe it?" and i kept saying, "yeah, i can believe it, i told you they'd be in here."

now, if i didn't already have a couple Popes on the wall, i might not be so happy. wink.gif

BTW--this morning he asked me "what kind of supplemental minerals or food should i set out for them next year." tongue.gif

can you say "hooked?"
