Checking in Deer?

Re: Checking in Deer?

Yep, I agree with arrowman, last year opening day of archery season in IL sounded like opening day of shotgun. Correct me if I'm wrong but also in IL, you are to call your deer in the day of right? Not too easy since there are about 2 spots out on the property that we can get a cell signal. Heck, I really liked going to the check-in stations and looking at all the other deer, and showing off mine!

Re: Checking in Deer?

Here in AR you can check them in at a check station, phone them in, or use the Internet.

I like using the Internet system better than phoning it in because I get a confirmation e-mail to prove it was checked. We do have a paper tag attached to our license that we must affix before moving the animal.

Very handy.

wow...interesting....no personal interaction??!!, do you think there is anyhting unethical involved as far as lying about being a buck or doe and the type of tag that is used,

[/ QUOTE ]

That's exactly one reason I don't like it.It makes it way too easy for someone to kill a buck and call it in as a doe on a doe tag, especially with Illinois 2 buck a year rule.I much prefereed check stations. When I go up north for weekend hunts,we don't have electricity or phone service and I have to almost drive to where the check stations used to be to get a signal on my cell phone.

Same here, just have to have the tag on the animal, and signed, and dated. if you get caught then you are in big trouble.

Don't forget in some areas in Ont, we do have a Hat for Hides program, and places to drop off the bottom jaws for succesful hunter crests. Both of these are optional for the hunter to do.

Re: Checking in Deer?

Missouri has the same thing as Arkansas with the internet and all. I know that agents like the internet system better here. Our local agents said that helps him concentrate more on poaching then sitting at the check stations. He said he caught several poachers last year just by following up on some that did the internet checking.

Yea,that's what they claimed an advantage for Illinois DNR officers, the problem here is that DNR officers didn't run the check stations I've been to anyways, they were run by volunteers and students.

Re: Checking in Deer?

So far we don't have to check whitetail in down Texas way. Heck for that matter, nothing gets checked in but you must document your license with location, date, county and have the right tag for the species. Many have tagged their deer and entered the correct information on the tag with the animal in transit but forgot to enter this information on their license. Depending on the Game Warden, this can be a very costly mistake.

Typically all the ranches in Texas that practice QDM require all harvested deer taken from their property be carried to a check in location. Some ranches require the animal to not be field dressed and their weighed live, gutted, dead weight, aged and if it's a buck scored B&C. The practicing landowners participating in these programs are screened by Game folks to help them determine deer harvests within the respective county. It's working and whitetail down here are getting better (free range).

Re: Checking in Deer?

Check in deer? Never have had to here. Heck we don't even have deer tags here. Just the total honor system.

Several years back they were talking about doing a mandatory telecheck system but it's never gotten past the voluntary stage. It sure would have been nice to be able to gather data on the county level but a madatory telecheck never happened. All of the deer data the state gets comes from voluntary groups that participate in programs like DMAP that turns in specific data along with the state biologist aging DMAP praticipants deer from jaw bones along with the few hunters that call in to the voluntary telecheck system.

Re: Checking in Deer?

Same here Hoot. We've been on DMAP for 16 years. I just wish we could get some kind of reporting system even if we don't have tags. We have one of the best state wildlife web sites around for ease of accessing deer data but only a limited amount of data that goes into it. smirk.gif
