Witnessed a fight this evening!!!!!!!

I went hunting this evening after work. I slipped into my stand about 6:15.

About 7:15 a 6 pointer came into a soybean field & grazed alone for about 20 minutes. All of a sudden another 6 pointer with a bigger body deliberately walked out of the woods without hesitation & started a fight with the smaller deer. I was in shock at how fast they started fighting. It was very little posturing, they just went at it. It lasted between 5-6 minutes until the smaller deer trotted off about 50 yards.

The bigger of the 2 deer just stood there until the smaller buck left the field all together. After that the bigger deer walked over to a scrape 75 yards from my stand, worked a licking branch then urinated in the scrape. I thought it was pretty amazing, I've never seen a buck pee in a scrape in the wild before.

I guess with the cool weather the pre rut is just around the corner. grin.gif

Was it a full blown, knock em down fight to the death or were they sparring. I saw 2 little bucks spar for about 5 minutes last night but I've never seen a serious fight.

I wouldn't say it was a fight to the death. I've seen bucks playfully spar in past seasons & it was always at the beginning of Sept when they are in bachelor groups. They weren't sparring, they were fighting. I'm talking about locked horns & major pushing back & forth. The bigger deer was clearly trying to establish his dominance. Usually when they playfully spar they gently tap horns then they'll go back to eating together or something. This was a fight.

Here is a question. Let's say you see a decent sized buck fighting with a smaller buck. Is is ok to take the shot? or will one be available after the fight?

I think it would be okay to take the shot after they quit fighting. Its nearly impossible to cleanly shoot a deer when he's fighting with another deer.

Usually after they quit fighting the dominant deer will just stand their while the other one leaves the area.

I could have shot either of these deer last night, but I've got photos of a bigger 9 pointer that grazes in the same field & works the same scrapes.

Just seeing them go at it was awesome though.

Re: Witnessed a fight this evening!!!!!!!

Great when you see that out in the wild. I seen my first hot doe experience last year, she had 4 bucks after her and the bigger one would chase the other 3 off but they would only go a short distance. That bigger buck and doe had their tongues hanging out as this chase seemed to be taking its toll. Never did see him breed her but when she got enough energy she ran from my stand area over the ridge and I lost sight of all of them. This all happened within 17 yards of my stand. Was awesome to see these deer doing this!

Have seen some fights too, awesome to witness! Thanks for sharing your experience!

Re: Witnessed a fight this evening!!!!!!!

Last year I was in a ground blind right off my food plot and I heard two bucks going at it in the thick cutover. After they stopped i started blowing on my grunt call a nice eight point came out all bowed up looking for another fight.. he found it at the end of my Weatherby grin.gif I don't know if it was because he had just stopped fighting but the meat was the most gamey I've ever tasted. I ended up throwing most of it away. I had bled it out like i always do in ice water for almost a week before I processed it and tried soaking it in milk but still couldn't eat it. I've yet to see it happen though I bet it was cool to witness in person congrats on the experence

You know the deer my daughter shot last year had been fighting, it never bled after she shot it with a .243. Ended up not finding the deer right away, due to no blood whatsoever. Actually ended up after the wife helped me look she convinced me it must have been a miss, but I did later find the deer. I kind of figured the deer was so tense and the muscles were so tight when she shot it that was maybe why it did not bleed. Pretty sure I read somewhere that shooting a relaxed deer will yield the best meat.

Re: Witnessed a fight this evening!!!!!!!

That's pretty cool, I've heard them fighting before but never actually seen it.

A few years ago during our early blackpowder season

I watched a bigger buck run two 4pts out of his territory, It was a little out of muzzleloader range so I just watched with the binos. It was like he had a gun on them, kinda funny.......they were in front of him and would stop every few yards and then he would lower his head like he was getting ready to charge and they would move on a little further.......I ended up getting him "the bigger one" in rifle season.
