Guest outdoor_adventurer
i have a major problem... opening day is sunday oct. 1st and i just checked the weather forecast for that day and the forecast is a high of 68 and partly sunny... and the low is 50. saturday night it is supposed to get down to 45....now to the question... is it worth my time going out and hunting the morning... or waiting till the afternoon.. or is it better to sit out all day and wait it out???? would blind calling and maybe a little rattling do any good in these conditions... i'm set up on 4 fresh rubs and a few pear trees... what should i do??????? any suggestions will be helpful!!! Guest Beehaw
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? I have a theory that I will NEVER kill a deer from home. The biggest deer I have ever seen was seen when every single conventional wisdom said "stay home." In short: If you have the opportunity, GO HUNTING!!! ruttinbuc
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? Bucks are sparring some here in NJ. Light tickling of rattling bag could bring in a curious buck looking to show his place in the pecking order. I 'd sit in the morning for a few hours and get back out in the evening. Get yourself some buck scent and pay attention.

VTbowman
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? Yes morning hunts in early season are very high % to see and harvest deer. As well as evening. Deer are still pretty much in there summer routines and feed in the evens and all night long and go back toi there beds in the mornings. I normallt sit dark to about 10 or 11am and then back out by 2pm until dark. I personally dont find it very advantagous to sit all day during our Oct season but do during the rut in Nov. Guest buckhunter87
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? alot of times when people call or rattle too early in the season, it will spook the deer. So this means that it depends on what the deer are doing at your spot. For instance, i live in nebraska, and where i hunt that is all im seeing with the bucks. But my friends place right across the river in iowa has no bucks fighting. But yes go out, i shot my buck on the second weekend and it was 72 degrees. Good luck
vagobbln
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? Major problem?!!!!!????? After reading the topic, I clicked on your thread to see how many bones you'd broken in the car wreck or how your bow blew up on you! Major problem? I think not. Get in the woods! I agree with some of the other guys, 90% of life is about just showing up.
hunterfisherman
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? I've killed way more deer in the morning than the evening. I always get out in the am. Besides, can't shoot one from home. Even if you don't shoot a deer in the am you may see something that will help you later
magnatecsteve
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? Hey there, Im from Northern Indiana as well!! Where you from? Starke County here. I have killed two nice bucks on opening day, just key in on food sources and hunt between food and bedding areas. The mornings are better when the weather is still warm, in my opinion. Think about it, it takes longer for the sun to warm things up in the mornings, but the afternoons can still be warm after the sun goes down. I have taken way more deer in the mornings. I would just remain quiet as far as calling, if you are on a travel route between food and bedding, they are going to come through regardless. Maybe a doe bleet wouldn't hurt to get a deers attention, they are very much still social this time of year. Good luck!!
Guest ILclimber
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? I agree with all the fella's man, It's OPENING DAY!!!! Get out there and enjoy it! 10acboy
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? It's opening day and you are think of staying home?!? I tell you what, it could be 100 with 100% humidity, pouring down the rain, mixed with hail and maybe a twister, with a mild earthquake, and the earth's crust cracking open with lava pouring out, and I know where I'll be on opening moring - in the woods! You will regret it if you don't.
Guest OhioHunt
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? They are calling for rain here in Ohio too but as long as it's not a major storm I will be in my treestand. If you get the opportunity to hunt I say do it. Like many have already said you can't get your deer by hitting the snooze button on the alarm. As far as rattling and calling I am set up on a few rubs as well but I am going to just wait it out until closer to "that time". I don't want to take the risk of spooking anything. Actually I don't even want them to know that anything has even been in there until one walks in my shooting lane of course. Good luck and good hunting. wtnhunt
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? I would go. Weather is always a big factor early on here in the archery seasons. Was warm and windy here for our opener this past Saturday, were actually under a tornado watch, but I still went. Went and saw nothing, did not try any calling, kind of early yet in my opinion here for that and was really too windy anyways. Did see a couple does Saturday afternoon late. Did hear a few mid tone light grunts Sunday afternoon kind of late. Watched a nice turkey for over an hour Sunday morning.
Guest outdoor_adventurer
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? i'm from Elkhart county, but i hunt in Wabash county. thanks for the advice i think i will stay away from calling for a few weeks... and i have the new buck growl so bout rutting season (or the first of Nov) i will break that out and see what it brings me... i hunt just inside public land on my grandpa's and his friends hay field... it is within 25 yards of my stand... i'm facing the field... i hope everything goes well and everyone has a safe and successful opening day..and year! 123 4/8 P&Y
Re: Major problem?!!!!!????? Just go man. Maybe try a decoy. I've read a few articles on decoying bucks in the early season. It sounds like they will come check out other bucks they see in their home area, even before the pre-rut.
