tclubbs2
I had a situation the other night where I was about 60 yards from a small buck. I want to save him for a few years and did not have a shot anyway (he was straight on). He walked off and got about 85-100 yds away and stopped again. He was broadside then. I am new to the sport and am very comfortable to 40 yds with my bow. I only have 3 pins and 40 is the farthest I set it. My question is, is there anyone out there that would have shot the deer when he offered the shot at 85-100 if it were a bigger buck? I am wondering if I should buy a new sight with more pins and set one for a longer shot. I have always heard you shouldn't shoot one past 40 yds but reading some of the posts, it sounds like some of you take longer shots. Just curious. mo_hunter
Re: Just a question. I'd never take that shot. 40 yrds is as far as I'd shoot hunting. I practice out to 60 yrds.
M00N
Re: Just a question. The longer the distance between you and your target the more time they have to dodge the arrow and the more likely you are to have wounded deer due to them ducking and you hitting high, due to the wind catching the arrow and taking it off its path, or due to it just losing speed and not having a good enough impact strength. I'd have to agree with mo_hunter 40yards is a good hunting distance limit and 60yards is a good target distance for practice. The distances you listed I'd never shoot with my bow even at a target. preacherman
Re: Just a question. 40 yards is about my max........I, like some others, enjoy shooting at 60 yards in practice and even have a 60 yard pin; but I get tickled at myself.......I can hit the target at 60; but just don't know if it is ever going to be left, right, up or down. And it is because of this, that I would never shoot that far.
slughunter
Re: Just a question. 50 yards is my absolute max that I shoot, no farther than that. I dont think anyone shoud be shooting 85+ yards at a deer with their bow. -shane
Guest lobsterman
Re: Just a question. personally, my bow has one pin, set for 20 yards...i think 30 might be my max, definetly not any further...

magnatecsteve
Re: Just a question. My personal max is 40 as well. I don't think there are very many bows that will have the KE to get both lungs at 85 yards. There are just too many things that could go wrong with that far of a shot too. bigbucks
Re: Just a question. if u should at a deer with a bow at 85 yards im sorry but that just not right, your crazy and personaly ur taking the challenge out of trying to get the deer close to you! theres always rifle season for that. TOMSD5
Re: Just a question. 25 - 30 yards max for me ....it's ok to practice at greater distances as it will make you steadier on a close shot...
KyBucks
Re: Just a question. Nothing any farther than 35 for me. I honestly think it would be a very bad choice for anyone to try a shot beyond 50 yds.
VtBowhunter
Re: Just a question. I do all my hunting with a bow, and I limit myself to 40 yards........I can hit a target at 120 consistantly, but that's only for fun. Could I kill a deer at the distance? Absolutely. Will I try? NEVER!!! It doesn't take much for a deer to move while that arrow is in the air, and now your perfect shot is a gut shot or worse.
Pinwheel5
Re: Just a question. I practice out to 70 but my max hunting is 40. But then it has to be a perfectly clear shot.
Stinger-Hunter
Re: Just a question. Absolutely not!!!!! The furthest I'll shoot is 42 yards. That is the edge of my foodplot and my third pin is set for 42 yards and I practice out to 50. You have to suck it up and wait until they get minimally within your personal range that you've practiced and been successful at consistently. I heard a story of some guy in Minnesota that my friend knew that said he shot a deer at 100 yards and everyone was impressed, that's all I needed to hear to know the guy was an idiot. BowJoe
Re: Just a question. I can shoot at 50 yds but it all depends on how bad of the shakes I have. If I feel like I'm too shaky or nervous then I will just wait for a better shot. I don't ever want to be surprised I hit a deer. I want to know I will hit that deer and it was a good release. craig mack
Re: Just a question. 30 yards is my max while hunting. I have a 40 and 50 yard pins but I only use them in practice. Most my stands dont have shots past 30 yards anyways(I hunt in the thick stuff).
tclubbs2
Re: Just a question. I did not think I should, but after reading that some of you practiced at that distance I was wondering. Like I said, I am comfortable at 40yds. I would like my first to be closer though. Good luck to everyone that begins their hunts this weekend.
shockwave
Re: Just a question. it`s not worth the risk shotting that far, if you diddn`t spook that deer, chances are you can find a stand thats a lot closer to get a higher percentage shot at him. Tominator
Re: Just a question. 85-100!!! No freakin' way. Not a very responsible shot for many reasons. 40 is my max.
buckee
Re: Just a question. 85-100 yards would be a grossly irresponsible bow-shot on any living animal IMO. I don't care how good you think you are. (not you personally...just a statement ) I've been bow-hunting for over 13 years now and even though my personal max is 30 yards. in perfect conditions, I prefer them 20 yards or less. Tony
Re: Just a question. 85 to a 100 yards is just to far im my opinion. i shoot lots of competition shoots and i can make good shots out to 90 yards. me and some buddies shot at a paper plate at 90 yards and i hit it like 10 out of 13 times. but this was with competition gear where i can dial my sight for that exact distance. for hunting my max is 50 yards. but i will take a 15 yarder anyday of the week. i like to get them close. Know your max distance and stick to it. Shoot Strong Tony
johnf
Re: Just a question. I can keep most shots in a paper plate at 60 yards. I don't have a single stand with shot opportunities more than 25 yards, and that's what I prefer.
