Re: Pick your 3 rifle set.....caliber and gun

Well, for squirrel and other small game similar to squirrels I like to hunt with shotguns, not rifles. I also would never hunt any of the big african game species as it doesn't interest me. African antelopes, yes, but zebras/giraffe/elephants/rhinos, no. Biggest game animal I'd ever find myself interested in hunting would be a Moose, Elk, and Grizzly Bear. Here are my three rifle choices below. I'd use them to hunt anything from Groundhogs up to Grizzly Bears.

1. Remington Model Seven SS in .243 Win

2. Remington Model Seven CDL Magnum in .270 WSM

3. Remington Model 700 SPS in .300 WSM

I can play by the rules.

My small game rifle is the Ruger 10/22 for sure. It's not my favorite but you can strip it down in the field with ease.

My next would be the 30-30 and one that was maunifactured by Winchester. Kinda hard to kill these and the caliber fits the medium range. It's not ultra high velocity nor caliber but it works well. Plus, when I get really old it will fit my old small waek hands.

And then I would choose the Ruger M77 (notice I did not say Mark II) Pre "1970" preferred! Chambered in the .270 caliber. It Does not kick like a mule. Ammo is available everywhere and to top it all off it has all the gusto of those flat shooting abilities that the mag calibers have.

As far as killing "big game" Head shots would be all I would take.

I currently own all these rifles as well for the reasons I have given. grin.gif Anal or what?

Re: Pick your 3 rifle set.....caliber and gun

1) Ruger 77/22 w/ Leupold 2-7 rimfire scope

2) Winchester 70 classic SS/SY .270 WSM w/ Leupold 4.5-14x40 B&C

3) Winchester 70 Classic SS/SY .338 w/ Leupold 3.5-10x40

Alternate #2, however, due to living in a slug gun/muzzleloader deer state: Knight Disc Extreme .45 w/ Leupold 2-7 ML scope or the new Encore Pro-hunter 12 ga. slug gun with Leupold 3.5-10x40.

Have them, love them.

22-250 Ruger M77 MkII

30-06 Ruger M77 Mk II UL (already have just needs a trigger job...)

325WSM Kimber classic (Ruger doesn't chamber it's M77 MkII in 325 WSM yet as far as I can tell.)

crazy.gifsmirk.gifgrin.gif

As a reloader I can tone the 22-250 down in velocity for the smallest game or up for long range varmints and even small dee species where legal...the 06 can take nearly every game species on the planet in its own right...but I would add the 325 for extra "insurance" on the largest of North American game...ie Moose, big bears, buffalo, as well most larger African game. Technicaly none of the above is Apropriate for Elephant...but since I never intend to hunt elephant, I don't think that is an issue...

Were I to have a "complete" battery mouse to elephant...I would add one more rifle to each end of the spectrum...ruger 10/22 for most small game and a double rifle in either 416 Rigby or 458 Lott for "dangerous" game... smirk.gif

Kimber or Anchutz bolt 22 lr for little critters and plinking.

Kimber 243 Win for varmints to deer.

Something in 375 H&H or 375 Wby for everything bigger. Maybe a Sako, Rem 700 Custom build, or Model 70.

Ruger 10/22WMR for small to Med game. Solid tips for small game and hollow point for med sized game.

Remington 700 Mountain Rifle in a 30-06. Light gun with enough range, bullet weights/options, and knock down power for all NA game. Best bullet availability of all the calibers.

Ruger #1 Tropical in a 458 Win Mag. Can be loaded light (down to 45-70 specs. with 300 grain bullets) or heavy (up to 2100 fps and 5000 fp lbs of energy with a 500 grain bullet) depending on the game you are hunting or how much recoil you can take and it will kill any legal game animal on earth. I would also want the extra knock down power for dangerous game. Single shot may not be the best choice, but I love my #1.

To the guys with .270's, .308's, .338's etc as their "big gun".............

Have you ever seen a Cape buffalo or a rhino or an elephant up close or even in a picture?? grin.gifsmirk.gifgrin.gif

Just curious.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sure have and I wouldn't be hunting those critters anyway, so why would I need a cannon for them??

That had to be a PA girl. grin.gif

I was just jabbing the guys who made their own rules for the list. wink.gif I specified "from squirrels to elephants". Guess some people can't dream as big as others. grin.gif
