Alaska - HELP!!!

Hi all. As most know (although I was missing on the forums for nearly a year) I am an accomplished bow hunter. I was on a self guided backpacking, sea kayaking, and salmon fishing trip on the Kenai Penninsula (For those who have never been GO you will never forget it!). While up there I became frineds with a guy who had just moved there (he had been there 3 weeks) well needless to say we keep in touch. I have decided to take him up on an invite to "come up whenever you want and I will fly you anywhere".

So next year I have decided to bow hunt Alaska. Now here is where I need help... HOW THE HECK DO YOU MAKE SENSE OF THE ADF&G WEBSITE?!?!?! Auction hunts, Tier II, Draw??? My friend being a Greenhorn is not quite sure. I got the hunting skills down, he owns a plane and is a seasoned pilot and outdoorsman... Can anyone recommend a resource(s) to help make this a little more understandable?

Or has anyone else been there? Here in NH it is pretty straight forward... you just buy an archery permit and you are all set to hunt anywhere in the state. I am simply looking to hunt moose/caribou and/or grizzly. Any experience or advise on how to make sense of the ADF&W website and getting a license would be apreciated.

Re: Alaska - HELP!!!

I'd call the Alaska div of wildlife and ask lots of questions that's what they get paid for.If your going to hunt bear nonresidents have to hire a guide.when doing a remote bowhunt I keep a 480 ruger in camp and when packing out meat.A dead carcus is like ringing a dinner bell for a bear.

We don't have auction's for tags in Alaska. Either over the counter or drawing. Tier I or II is subsistence or you prove you've hunted there before it became a Tier drawing. You must hire a guide to hunt Grizzly, Dahl Sheep or Goat. (Mainly because these are high alpine game and you could very easly be hurt or killed). Alaska is divided up into 26 unit's in each unit is sub units. With lot's of hunting oppertunity in just about all of them. If you'r interested in Moose LEARN TO CALL THEM.(Love Thunder and Bull 2 by Wayne Kubat is a good start)(Sportsmen's Warehouse)(www.alaskaremote.com) It will save you a lot of work because, it's easier to lure them to you than you pack it out. Our terrain is absolutley, brutial. (tundra heads, bogs) Especially if your using a bow. They are quite easy to call. The trick is to stay put. They can hear for a great distance and he's got to go through all those bogs, swim, creeks river's etc. to get to you. You have to beleive in the call's. Call fish and game, they are sitting around just waiting to answer questions. Unfortunetly, because of funding they do have limited info, yet they can be a great resourse. Be prepared, this place is unforgiving. I don't want to diswade anyone from comming here but you need to be in desent shape and good gear. Float trips are very popular and you can rent really good gear. We have great, knowledgable pilot's. (rent a satilite phone) just be prepared and above all enjoy our state. Bow hunter's that want to hunt Bou on the north slope. FLY TO FAIRBANKS. It's an 8 hour drive from Anchorage and another 10 hours to the slope. You can call F&G in Fairbanks and talk to Ritta she's our local Bou biologist. If you call F&G be spicific on what you want to hunt and it help's if you know were you want to hunt. Same with fishing. Are they in. Pick a mid to early date so you can plan your time here. If your interested in different hunts or fishing, questions you can e-mail me at [email protected] or alaskaatitsbest.com
