preventing or muffling coughs

Any of you hard core deer hunters have any suggestions for preventing coughs or muffling them in the woods? I have trouble with this every fall, especially in archery season. When I get a tickle in the back of my throat, I'm in trouble. I have used Hall's cough drops, but I don't think they help much unless you have one in your mouth constantly. Maybe there is something better. There are liquid cough medicines...maybe I should take a swig of that before heading out (as long as it is alcohol free, etc.). Any ideas?

Re: preventing or muffling coughs

Have had some pretty irritating itches that could not be held back too many times to count. If I absolutely have to I always just try to either cough into my arm between my shoulder and elbow or into my parka. Kind of muffles it somewhat.

Try not to take any cough lozenges if I can help it, but have taken the ludens cherry flavored and still seen deer.

Re: preventing or muffling coughs

I pinch my nose and hold my fleece gloved hand tightly to my mouth.

Recently on a Bear hunting trip my friend was 80yds away in another treestand. I had a chest cold and was coughing like crazy all day(every 5-10 minutes).

He only heard me cough 3 times, probably when I had my hands in my pack getting something, so I would say thats fairly good since it was an all day hunt.

I have the same problem when I hunt. I was told by an old deer hunter in my family to gargle warm salt water before going out. For me it stops the tickle in the throat. Hope it helps...

Re: preventing or muffling coughs

I had a medical procedure a few years ago that involved the doctor inserting a cable through my nose and into my lungs. Every time he moved that thing I needed to cough. He told me that when I felt like that I should take very rapid, shallow breaths. It worked there and it works for me in the stand. It's almost like panting I guess.

I would just hold your glove tight on your mouth, works fine for me. You may go with a cough silencer, seems like a HUGE waste of money to me personally, hunting equipment is getting way out of hand nowadays. Good luck with it

Re: preventing or muffling coughs

I hate when you get that tickel in the back of your throat....I find that insted of trying to get rid of it with small little coughs....I just get it over with by covering my mouth the best I can and let out a big cough....seems to work for me.
