...cut up your tag if you shoot a deer and cannot recover it??

i was reading this on another forums...the initial post was a kid who had shot a deer and couldn't find it that night and was originaly asking if the meat would still be good...well it quickly turned into people telling him that if he didn't find it then to cut up his tag and learn from it...which then turned into a debate over that.

do any of you do that?? it seems like a waste to me...yeah it sucks that you would shoot an animal and not find it...but it don't see what cutting up your tag would teach you confused.gif of course this is just my opinion...what you choose to do with your tags is up to you

Re: how many of you....

Sounds like a bunch of older people trying to rattle a kids confidence. Hope that young kid didn't listen, thats why so many kids shy away from hunting, because of idoits like that.

I would never ever tear up my tag.... everyone makes a bad shot, or doesn't recover it for other reasons, that doesn't make you a bad hunter, just crappy luck. So no it dont make sense to tear up the tag... move on and go hunt.

Re: how many of you....

reading that kind oof put me in a bad mood....its times like this i am glad i belong to at least one good place that has a POSITIVE influence on kids

someone over there had replied to that topic...and told the kid he should not have been hunting since #1. the forecast called for rain over night and he should have been out there trying to dhoot a deer knowing this and not having enough "hours logged" in the woods...since when do you have to be in the woods a certain amount of time before shootign a deer?? and #2. he also told him that he should not have been hunting knowing he had to be at school the next morning...c'mon...now a kid shouldn't be in the woods on a school night, how many adults go hunting after work knowing they have to get up in the morning?....they wonder why so many kids are turned off of hunting...

Those things happen all the time! frown.gif

If those people are telling that youngster that it never happened to them, I certainly wouldn't have any respect for them!! frown.gifmad.giffrown.gif

I have never heard of anything so stupid in my life to "cut up your tag"!! frown.gif

Re: how many of you....

Definitely not. You try your best to recover the animal, no matter what it takes. Then and only then do you move on. I helped a friend look for a deer for two days and we never did find the animal unfortunately. But I have never heard of anyone cutting up a tag just because they lost a deer. Like some of the forum members why waste a tag, that is senseless.

Re: how many of you....

think i'd just cut up a $20 bill before i cut up a tag.. at least save you a trip of going to get another one. or is that part of 'learning your lesson' also? that's ridiculous. from what i've seen, most guys that really don't care if they recover that animal or not usually don't have tags in the first place.

Now lets not point the finger at one age group, of which I'm a part of. I've heard some ridiculous statements like the ones referenced in this topic before from so called high and mighty hunters of all age groups.

As far as the topic goes there were obviously some ridiculous post slamming this young hunter for no reason at all in my opinion. The fact is at some point most hunters experience times when they loose a deer. That’s just an unfortunate part of hunting. Deer die for many reasons besides being killed by a hunter. Are we going to cut up tags for every deer that dies. I think not!!

I’m glad I’m not a part of the forum where that topic was posted with the responses that resulted from it. It probably would have gotten real ugly between myself and the high and mighty hunters telling this young man to cut up his tag and slamming him for hunting when they thought he shouldn’t.

Re: how many of you....

I did that once on a buck I shot in 2000.

I was on my lease on a Saturday evening when I shot a very nice heavy 9pt. I shot the deer a little back. We trailed that deer for over 3 hours on our hands and knees until it jumped a creek where we finally lost the blood trail. I had to teach Sunday school the next day, so there was no way I could have spent the night, so we drove the 3 hours home.

The shot I put on that deer was lethal I knew, but I didn't know how far it would go.

My buddy found my deer 2 weeks later during gun season. I got the rack, but obviously no meat, so I decided not to tag another buck that year, even though I could have.

In hindsight, I should have gone back down to the lease after church to find him. frown.gif

Re: how many of you....

Coyotes have to eat, same as worms...(my Clint Eastwood impression of Buzzards got to eat, same as worms)

It is a fact that some deer do not get recovered. Its also a fact that some wounded deer do recover. I keep hunting. I have only lost 2 my whole 22 years of big game hunting and I consider that pretty darn lucky.

Re: how many of you....

nobody like to wound a deer, we are all ethical, whether buck fever takes over or equipment failure plays a part or risky shot placement. I would never cut up my tag, hunting is learning and next time you will remember to be more patient and do your best.

We learn by our mistakes and with hunting things happen that are sometimes out of our control, the ones we can control we must try to do our best!

Re: how many of you....

I would never cut up a tag. Learn from your mistake and move on. This happens to all bow hunters I'm sure in there lifetime. It stinks but it happens.

If I cut up a tag without getting any meat, I'd be wasting the money for the tag and a lot of money on beef for the next year. Vension lasts me all year and saves a lot of money.
