My weekend Buck... *pic*

I was in the attic doing some wiring on Saturday. My buddy was on my couch watching my new bigscreen... now thats a buddy.

My wife and her mom had ran to Chouteau and they came in as I was getting out of the attic. I was covered in cellulose insulation, wearing a pair of worn out Lucky Jeans, Nike's, and an Old Navy T-shirt. I looked pretty pitiful. I dropped a few hints about sneaking out for about an hour. She told me to have fun... grin.gif

This certain spot I hunt has a ton of activity about 30-45 minutes before dark. I loaded up my buddy and started booking it that way. It was roughly 4:45 when we approached from behind a heavy Cedar. Its dark at 5:30 so we were pushing the limit. Ive snuck in that way before and it works very well. We sat there in dismay, we didn't see a single deer.

I had been bragging this spot up so I felt pretty bad. Our Rifle season ended the next day (Sunday) and I had no way to get back out before it would end. This was realistically a desperate 45 minute hunt in which we had at lease hoped to see some does playing in the field..... but again, nothing.

It was getting close to dark-30 so we decided to walk back a different direction then we headed in. It was an easier walk. We had made it about 80 yards when we approached the edge of an old corral. I saw a decent sized body standing in the field roughly 80-100 yards away. At first I thought it was a calf but I realized there weren't any cows in the field. We quickly stepped back behind the corral. We really didn't have any cover but he didn't seem to notice us at first. I put my scope on him to see his size. I couldn't make out his rack. I knew it was of decent height but thats all I could tell.

Somehow he spotted us and he quickly raised his head. I got a small glimpse of his rack as he raised his head. His antlers blended into the timber behind him so I had no way of knowing his exact size. I knew he was a legal buck and it was the last of my rifle season so I made the decision to take him. My buddy was whispering, "Dude, I want some meat!" That was the clincher. I leaned against the corner post and centered the cross hairs on his chest...boom. He swaggered and flipped his tail. It looked as if he dropped behind the knoll he was standing on. We walked about 80-100 yard to where he was standing but we didn't see him.

I knew I had hit him hard but still, we didn't see him. My cell phone rang, it was my sister. I told her that I had shot a buck. We were hunting about 200 yards from her house and she heard the shot. A few minutes later my sister, brother-in-law, and their german sheppard came out to help. We hit the timberline with a spotlight but couldn't find anything. I was heading to my truck for extra light when my brother in law said. "Found him!"

Their German sheppard trailed him from the shot to where he was laying.... Handy dog! He ran a total of about 40 yards but it was really dark. If I would have had a better look at him I may have passed him but this has been a really dry season so I cant complain. This is only my second deer of the year.

The 180grn corelokt punched a clean hole through his heart and turned one of his lungs into Jello. Again, I completely avoided anything such as the bladder or stomach. It was a good clean kill. He's just a young 2 year old 7-point. He weighed in at roughly 120 so he's a very decent 2-year old for around here. I cant complain! His tarsal glands were still really strong. I think we may have a post rut coming.

We still have bow season until January 15th so now im excited.
