Nick
Well , I guess I take the award for this month. I went out opening morning of bow season and planned on taking the first mature deer I had come in. About 8:30am two 1 1/2 year old does and 2 larger does came in. I had a broadside 20 yard shot at one of the larger does and tried to slide my arrow a couple inches to the left of a small tree in between her and me. I released and my arrow caught the tree and took off sailing through the woods. I just took the shot as shooter error and moved on. Well this morning I get out in the woods with two arrows left in the quivver. Absolutely perfect early season morning....a cool 35-40 degrees, sun shining, very still and animals moving all around. Well the same 4 does were working their way down the edge of the woods and soy bean field around 7:30. Same scenario...One of the bigger does offered a broadside shot at 20 yards...only no brush or trees to slide the arrow around this time. I took my time and squeezed the trigger and watched my arrow sail just underneath her belly. Now I'm starting to get ticked...because I just dont miss and now I've missed twice! So I got right up (I was hunting off the ground) and pace off to where the doe was standing while they stood about 70 yards in the soy bean field watching me. My guess was correct...20(21 to be exact) yards. I go back to my stool and start looking over my bow, playing both shots through my head wonding what the heck is going on. I didnt have much time to figure it out because it wasnt 15 minutes later I look up and here come an even bigger doe down the same path! I mean, this doe must have been close to 200lbs on the hoof.....absolutely huge....no chance of missing that huge body. She steps up to the same spot the previous doe was standing and I already had my uncle on the phone to come help track because I knew she was dead. I take my time again....20 yard pin behind the shoulder and squeeeeeeeeeeezzzeeee.....off goes my last arrow through the soy bean field. Now I've absolutely had it......I picked up all my gear while vocalizing out loud every cuss word that came to mind and stomped out of there. I was done bow hunting for the year. So I get home and do a few things around the house but I just couldnt get that stupid bow off my mind. I go grab the bow and put a couple broadheads on a couple arrows, set out a target at 20 yards and let one rip. DOH..........that was a foot low and to the right!!!!! Next arrow...same results. After tweaking my sight pins and snugging all my bolts I guess I'll give the bow another try. Lesson learned: Always shoot your broadheads before you go hunting. The last two seasons I shot a Mathews Outback with Easton Excel 400's and a 100 grain G5 Montec.....That bow threw them arrows and broadheads the same as the field tips. This year I got a Switchback XT and continued shooting the same arrows and heads and just figured they would shoot the same since they did out of my old bow...WRONG!!!!! Its just a good thing I wasnt shooting at bucks because then I would really be sick!

MCH
Re: Moron of the Month Yep, you'd have my vote..... Hey, look at it this way: it could be worse, you could've wounded a deer.

Nick
Re: Moron of the Month [ QUOTE ] Hey, look at it this way: it could be worse, you could've wounded a deer [/ QUOTE ] And thank God I didnt. I think thats the only good thing that came out about the whole deal. Lost about $50 worth or arrows and broadheads, lost my confidence, lost my enthusiasm, educated 1/2 dozen deer...what do I do? Keep on huntin.

hutchies
Re: Moron of the Month Don't feel bad. My 05 Illusion was a tack driver with muzzy 4 blades. My 06 model won't group them well at all. Same setup just a year newer bow.

ruttinbuc
Re: Moron of the Month That is the perfect lesson for all bow hunters. You need to shoot the setup you are going to hunt with in hunting situations. All year! You need to keep your equipment and your head in the game. GWSmith
Re: Moron of the Month [ QUOTE ] You need to keep your equipment and your head in the game. [/ QUOTE ] Thats what I've been doing wrong right there Tuesday night left the quiver from the bow on the back bumper of the truck...and drove off It's going to be that picture perfect morning to hunt tommorrow around here... Left my bow at the shop tonight after sighting in the new arrows and broadheads I feel like it would have been better to keep my money in my pocket, not buy the ticket to ride, and just stay off this weeks ride through STUPIDVILLE...but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO People are starting to show up in my life just to see what will happen next
hoosierhunter
Re: Moron of the Month hehe..My buddy had a similar situation. He went the the bowshop and bought some new boradheads(eagle talons i believe) and those broadheads spin to the left and the guy fletched his arrows to the right or vice versa. Anyway he didn't catch this b/c he didn't practice with those broadheads. I videoed him Sunday night and he missed the first doe way left and then gut shot the next doe. He couldn't figure out what was going on and probably couldn't think for how much chatter I had in his ear.(esp since I smoked a doe that morning ..anyway he shot them today and found out the arrows are knuckling basically out of the bow, b/c the broadheads are trying to spin one way and the arrow the other.......So I'm giving the "here's your sign" award to him for not practiciing with his broadheads... Doc
Re: Moron of the Month [ QUOTE ] Lesson learned: Always shoot your broadheads before you go hunting. [/ QUOTE ] Yup. You learned the right lesson alright. Here's another one: always do some practice with your heavy clothes on before the cold weather sets in. That can give you an occasional surprise. At least some time should be spent shooting as realistically as you can to actual hunting conditions. Otherwise your hunt is left in the hands of Murphy.
