Ever sleep in your car

Have you ever slept in your vehicle before a hunt?

I am thinking of doing this for the late primitive season right after Christmas. I could rent a cabin, take my pop-up down there again and stay with a friend(he drinks tho and I dont).

So I am thinking of just driving down and sleeping in my van before hunting that day. But it made me wonder who has done this before.

Have you?

Re: Ever sleep in your car

A van should not be bad.....just pull out the back seats and throw a mattress back there....beats the tent!! grin.gif It could be interesting if you were 6'4" and drove a Nissan pickup like me. laugh.gif I have dozed when I got to my spot too early to hunt though......actually it is fun, just listening to the radio, dark outside, just close your eyes and relax....does that count? grin.gif

Re: Ever sleep in your car

van maybe lol. i have fallen asleep in a small car for a trip and man, does that ever kill the back. I am 6'4" tall so thats probably why, sitting in a small car is bad enough with my knees wrapped around my neck and i have to get on my hands and knees to get in the things LOL. depending how tall you are, go for it.

Re: Ever sleep in your car

I slept in my truck on the weekend of Sept 15th. I woke up to the police knocking on my window. They searched my truck, searched me, and asked what I was doing there. I told them I went to the hospital because my leg was messed up and they gave me some meds that made me drowsy so I pulled over to sleep for a couple of hours. (I was in a church parking lot).

They questioned me a few more times, called the hospital, called Walgreens, and basically tried to get me to admit to the two burgluries that had taken place in the neighborhood.

I don't nap in that neighborhood anymore.

The funny thing is that my bro-in-law was a cop in that town for 6 years. he moved two weeks before this happened and I knew two of the cops on the police force. They didn't care - because they are @#$%@#$^@#$^@#$%!#$%!#$%!#$%!@#%!@#%!@#%.

P.S. For the record, I've never committed a crime in my life. - I went hunting in Indianapolis and on the way home my leg got swollen and stuff from sliding into third base during a softball game a few days before. On the way back to Chicago, I couldn't stay on the road due to the meds. I lived within that neighborhood all through highschool so I knew it was safe. I just didn't think I'd be the one being accused of a crime. Those guys were total Jerks!!!

(Watch the language guys....and the attempts to get around the "auto edit")

Re: Ever sleep in your car

I've done it for years...... but this year I bought a fiberglass topper for my rig, and sawed 2x4s for cross members and installed a sheet of plywood for an elevated platform.....added a twin size mattress and I was in the lap of luxury, LOL

And it still allowed me room to stuff gear underneath......my bow goat and deer even fit under for the ride home..........gotta like that.....

Re: Ever sleep in your car

only when my wife kicks me out of the house and i'm too tight to go to a motel grin.gifgrin.gif

Acutally, i slept in a vehicle one night--I was camping in Alaska with my brother and his wife and didn't want to stay in the same tent with them. I was so exhausted from fishing for 24 hours straight I slept like a baby.

Re: Ever sleep in your car

Spent several nights sleeping in my truck last year while hunting in IL. A good air mattress, good sleeping bag, and a good fiberglass shell on the truck and you can sleep pretty darned well.

Re: Ever sleep in your car

Tried sleeping in the cab of my truck once and had a very poor nights sleep that left me sore and tired for the next days hunt. I have a topper on the back and have slept in total comfort there on many a hunt. Just throw in a mattress, and a good sleeping bag in colder weather (have spent a few nights at 20 below zero), and you will be just fine. I also tried the 2x4 and plywood idea and found that I was too close to the topper when a deer snorted just outside my truck and I set up quickly and almost knocked myself out when my head hit the topper. Only other drawback is that in colder weather your breath will condense (and sometimes freeze) on the ceiling (and drip on you), windows and such. I have also slept outside on the ground in warmer weather but, a word of warning here, wild animals will, no matter how bad you stink, come and check you out at night. I even had a mouse think that my sleeping bag was a good place to call home, even with me in it. Ah, many stories to tell, but back to the original question; if you can stretch out and be comfortable and warm, go for it.
