lil hunter
I've never really payed that much attention to coyotes, but thats pretty neat. I didn't think they'd be all different colors/shades like that.

Guest shedhunter
Re: Coyote coloration? Yes coyotes have nice color variations. I like to shoot them and admire the pelt. It's interesting how one can be really light and the other can be really dark.
sureshot
Re: Coyote coloration? coyotes adapt there color to there area of living!! it usually takes abotu 3 generations but will adapt! Here when i shoot a coyote my fur buyer can tell what area I shot it in 80% of the tiem! The darker coyotes tend to be more of bush animals with thicker courser hair and tend to be courser to tend with all the burs ect of the bush, the med colored and "tawney" they call them are a kind of yellowy coyote are found more in the prairy grass and farmland, they are colored in accodence to there surroundings! Then there are the lighter ones, these have snow white bellies and really light pelts, they are the lake runners, they are suually found around big lakes and spand alot of time runnign the ice! The snow and glare has alot to do with the lighter color but it is amajing how the color varies from area to area! I have abotu 40 coyotes pelts hanging right now and htere are pretty well just the 3 color phases in them, the pale, tawny and dark, then of course there are black ones which are like albinos really rare and are not caused by the area they live! Soemtimes you will find different colors in a area but this is usually becosue of lone males movign in or soem being shot out, they say a coyote will travel up to 200 miles to find a mate, food ect!! Nice pics, thanks for sharing, they sure are a mazing animal that to many overlook!!

sureshot
Re: Coyote coloration? Personally its hard to tell with the eyes glowing but I suspect a female, the second pic looks more like a male by head structure, its really hard to tell on the light one!! By looking at the coyote It looke like just one of our lighter ones, its not a albino or anythign!! I am not saying every coyote follows what I said but it seems the majority have! She does not look like a pup really so probably been in the area for a while!! Look closly at your first pic, look behind the rear legs compared to the second pic, look at the body structure, look at the thick neck, and most of all look at the forehead, notice anything thta looks wierd? i would almost bet that is a cross or coydog like they call them!! my fur buyer had one last yearand [really rare up here] he showed me all the differences and the dog had curly hair behind the legs, under the belly, like that one does, it had different structure and has a different shaped head!Looks like you got a nother rare pic there to!! Thanks again for sharing!!
