Guest Yooper
Well I've had my stand up for a week and have been hunting this whole week. Well I go out this afternoon, Saturday, and I'm sitting there and all of a sudden I hear someone walking then someone talking and then someone putting up stand 70 yrds from mine. They can't see me because there are still leaves on the trees so I thought about going over there and telling them where I was but I was so upset that I just got down and left. I don't know what to do now. I'm so frustrated. I might not even try anymore.

magnatecsteve
Re: I officially hate State Land Maybe you could put some signs out "hunter in area" or something? Nothing permanent of course, but just a thought. But of course they can "technically" go wherever they want, but it just might keep some others that have some morals from intruding on you. M00N
Re: I officially hate State Land We always whistled at people who'd get too close when hunting and wave an extra orange hat at them. Most hunters would look for the abnormal whistle and then see the orange and immediately go around us to find somewhere else to go instead of walk right through the hunting area. If it's still not fully light yet we would shine our flashlights at them and turn it off and on repeatedly until they got the point to find somewhere else. Always worked to keep hunters at least out of view distance of us.
Airman312
Re: I officially hate State Land never cared for the idea of hunting on public land with a bunch of people you don't know...there's another good reason

Tony
Re: I officially hate State Land its too late now, but you should have whistled at him. he probably would have moved his stand location. you will either have to move your stand or just stick with it. hunting state lands means you must be prepared for this kind of problem. its very common where there is a lot of pressure to hunt. heck who knows maybe this guy is only hanging a stand for gun season? you made a huge mistake in not talking to him. what you can do now is leave a note with your phone number on it and leave it in a zip lock bag at his stand. if hes any type of ethical hunter, he might work with you on this. heck maybe he just a weekend warrior and you will get to hunt during the weekdays without ever seeing him. you must stay postitive. saying your going to give up is just a defeatist attitude. there is always a logical solution to any problem and being a bowhunter its your job to solve these problems. a few years back i had the same thing heppen to me, what i did was move my stand. it worked out for the best, i shot my biggest buck ever and the other guy tagged out as well. get back in there and hunt. sskybnd
Re: I officially hate State Land i've hunted public land before and have had the same thing happen, to me it depends on the trail im watching, ive sat there not being able to see them and visaversa, and have shot a few deer that if i wasnt there they would have had the shot, realy gets there goat to know that you were so close to them and you shot the deer, but like moon said if i think there going to get in front of me i'l shine a light on them to let them know im there and hopefuly they will move on. BowJoe
Re: I officially hate State Land I say that if it upsets you that much then YOU should move because that's even more rude to be there and let the guy go through all of the trouble of setting up a stand and THEN you tell him you'd like for him to move when you could have said it long before he ever set up in the first place. I bet one of his thoughts was to get away from other hunters as well. I say if you don't move it then you have only your ego to blame. After all, it's public land like you said. Guest Yooper
Re: I officially hate State Land I wouldn't be as upset if he wouldn't have parked 100 feet from my truck that he drove by to park infront of me. I knew it was state land and this could happen. The state land around here is so small that I can't even walk a good 2-3 miles in to get away from anyone. They tracts are only a couple hundred acres which everyone knows where they are because there aren't many.........I plan on moving my stand, well actually just take it down and hunt from the ground somewhere. Next year I'm taking a week off and going back to the U.P. to bowhunt on private land.

Rem308
Re: I officially hate State Land I hunted public land a LOT 2 years ago. My worst story was when 2 squirrel hunters walked up on me during a great day for bow hunting. They walked on through, so I sat there debating what to do next...within 1 hour, another squirrel hunter came walking through. Needless to say, time was all I killed that day. Doc
Re: I officially hate State Land Public hunting ground can be very frustrating as you are finding out. By the way, it is never going to get any better. As more and more good hunting land continues to be built on or posted up, public hunting grounds are going to get more and more crowded with these kinds of inadvertant interferences happening more frequently. There is also another major factor at work these days too. With the growing health craze, there seems to be a whole lot of people other than hunters climbing around the public forests. Mountain bikers and hikers and other users of public lands are growing by leaps and bounds. Unless we can afford our own hunting lands (and that's getting more difficult every year too) we just have to learn how to adapt. We also have to somehow expand our tolerance level to frustration. Believe me, over the past 50 years of hunting the same state land, I have seen changes like you wouldn't believe. When I first started bowhunting, I would have swore that I was the only person on the hill, and I think in most cases I was. Those days have been long over and I really don't see anyway that I will ever hunt those areas without a certain percentage of those days being unavoidably wrecked by a much more pressured land. Most of my hunting is more than a mile from any road and can't be approached without a very long strenuous climb up a very steep hill. That doesn't seem to matter any more. It's a new situation out there these days and like I said, you just have to adapt. Doc

missouri hunter
Re: I officially hate State Land some of my friends and i hunt real close during bow season when we hunt certain spots because we like to watch the other shoot deer and watch how they handle things. i have shot and seen quite a few deer shot sitting just thirty or forty yards from people, don't give up. bowtech
Re: I officially hate State Land yea .the best thing to do on public land is to set up 2 or 3 stands and keep moving around.you never know when someone is going to put up a stand beside you .it happens .. Stinger-Hunter
Re: I officially hate State Land You gotta go to an area that no one hunts. Let the 99/50ers push them to you. 99/50ers = 99% of the time they are no futher than 50 yards from their cars. I don't care what anyone says, climbing stands are still heavy - dragging a deer out with all your gear is tough from a long distance, though. Doc
Re: I officially hate State Land Actually, as I mentioned before, hunting long distances from the road is no longer a guarantee. I still look in awe when I see the steep terrain that montain bikers will go up. Once they are on top, the trails run everywhere. Hikers are getting a whole lot more energetic too. You can find them just about any distance from the road. Many hunters are also getting into the "long distance from the road" philosophy. Last year I ran into a panting, sweating, bowhunter that was loaded down with what looked like a 100 lbs of gear who had just climbed straight up the hill (about 3/4 of a mile to the top and nearly straight up). He isn't the first one that I have seen do that. We also have herds of small game hunters that come out for the day and walk the whole time banging and shooting up every area on the hill. Yes, there may be a whole lot more of these people down in the valley near the parking lots and roads, but more and more of them are convinced that if they climb those hills and walk way back in, they will find all the deer. So, finding that mythical area where "nobody hunts" is getting to be just about impossible. Doc
