Ruff
Bear hunting this year was uneventfull for me. Missed most of the training season due to house hunting and moving and them during the kill season I had to work many of the weekends. So I did'nt get out much but my dog/s got out quite a bit thanks the the "Soggy Bottom Bear Hunters" Group name of the families that I have gotten to know and hunt with the last few years. My Boss and good friend before he became my boss called me last weekend and said he has one weekend to get a bear and the tag was mine and he said I had this weekend off. So I gave one of the guys in the SBBH a call and asked them how they were sitting for tags yet and he said they needed tags or they couldn't hunt this weekend so I told him I had a tag for them and met them at camp about 5:30am and we promtly left to go check baits. Ricky one of the guys told me to go down a couple roads and check the baits there as I know where they are and were in the same place as last year. So Steve and I checked them but they were clean with no hits so we went to the meeting hill and waited for the others when "HillBilly" said the stick bait has been hit and looks to be a good bear. So by time Steve and I got there it was day light and they were turning two strike dogs out to see if they can get the bear jumped. After about 15 minutes the dogs really opened up and had the bear going so we put two more dogs in and they made their way in to and caught up to the others and the race was on. Never thinking that this would take up most of the day. After about a little more than a hour the bear was heading to a road and Steve and I flew to get where they were going and get ahead of the bear and hounds. Got out and loaded up the rifle and gave it to steve and said we need to get in there fast lets go. We got in there about 60 yards and there was the bear and dogs right with him. The bear cleared the dogs and we had a shot but the bear was now between us and the road. No shot as we had trucks and people on the road. Told steve to run up and get behind the bear and get a going away shot if he could but again dogs where there and he pulled the gun down and soon they were out of site again and heading back into the swamp. They stayed deep for a quite a while and then headed for a stub road and we were on our way again. Got to the end of the road and with rifle in hand we were off again trying to get in front of the bear and try to get a shot but in this area it was just to thick and we would never get a good shot and the bear made it past us before we could get there anyway so we took off on a 90 to try and cut them off again as it sounded like they were looping back and again we missed them and they were gone. But we did catch up to two of the dogs and one was injured bad enough that I pulled it and got it out of the woods and to the owner and radio'ed Ricky to get a couple more dogs in as I pulled one. So to get more in here to get pressure on the bear because it's just on a lope, fighting the dogs and not treeing. Now the dogs were out of ear shot from us because the block of woods we're in is about a 3 x 5 mile block. "Snow Shoe" got his tracker out and found where a few of the hounds were so we went to another road and tracked them again and they were closer now from where we were and soon we could hear them again and heading our way. So with rifle in hand once more off we go into the bush over the ridge and down into the swamp "HillBilly" radio'ed Steve and I we needed to get in there as the hounds had the bear bayed up or tree'ed as they were staying put. So I'm pushing Steve through the tangles to get there and Ricky was also on his way in when we got to a river we could here the dogs fighting and ricky got to the river between us and the fight and was yelling to get here he's going to kill the dogs. He (the bear) was in the shallows of the river and had his butt backed up to the steep bank and had the dogs in deeper water where they could'nt move fast or get out of the way and had already swatted a couple of them when we rounded the corner the bear was on it's hind legs hunched over and swatting and biteing at the dogs. We crossed the river to get onto the same side and Steve put a shot into the chest and it raised up taller then droped to all fours and plowed through the dogs and died just as it hit the other bank almost at Rickies feet. After almost 6 hours we had our bear. Never tree'd once the whole time. We checked the other dogs while getting them off the bear and most had bites or cuts from this hunt but nothing serious that would need a Vet. After a few high fives and attaboys we took a few pictures on the river and then cleaned out the bear with three of us on it pulled it out and finaly by late afternoon we had it out and back at camp. It was one of the most if not most exciting hunts I have been on and exhausted to say the least after the adrenaline subsided. Thanks Steve for all the fun!! Now if I could have just pulled the trigger! LOL!!

Ruff
Re: Bear Hunt 2006 [ QUOTE ] Cool. How long did it take you to get your kill permit? Which zone do you hunt? [/ QUOTE ] It took six or seven years for Zone A. This was our fifth kill for the season. We kept waiting for a real big one but with it being the last weekend we took this one as it was a pritty good bear and was to ruff on the dogs and the dogs were in trouble facing that bear in the river to let the hunt go much longer.
