jbeck
This might have to go in the bow hunting room, I'll let the Mods decide. On Thursday night I went out and shined the light in the field after putting the baby to bed. As the light crossed the field I saw a white belly laying about 20 yards from the lawn. I was heart broken when I saw it was the buck I'd been watching all summer. To make a long story shorter, there was an arrow protruding from the rear end of the deer. I thought maybe one of the neighbors might have shot the deer and he ran into the field. I looked for most of the night to find the shooter, no luck. I didn't want the meat to go to waste, so I stayed up until 12:00 am, adn I skinned and boned the buck. The next morning a young man showed up at my house and asked my wife If we had found a buck. She gave him the head after he left me a voice mail with his name and address. I found out that the young man and his cousin had snuck onto the property, and as luck would have it this buck walked past them. He shot 45 yards at it with it quartering toward him hard, the arrow went in mid way back the ribs, and exited the rectum. He jumped this deer 3 times in trying to recover it, when it tried to cross the field at the house and didn't make it. I was sick, I was really looking forward to being able to hunt this buck. He seems like a nice kid, just did something stupid. I didn't press charges, God tells me to forgive. But I must admit, I had a tough time forgiving this one. I did mention the only reason I wasn't pressing charges was because the bible tells us to forgive sins against us if asked to. OH well, just thought I'd share my weekend. The great thing about this is I haven't lost any sleep with this. LOL I did let this young man know if he didn't show up at the first of the month to help pay for the ground, I didn't want to see him when it came time to hunt the ground. Here is the buck I was hoping to post in the archery forum, I was hoping to be telling you how I watched this buck, patterned him and finally took him. But I'll just show you what I got after passing him up 2 years, Boy would he have been good next year if I didn't catch up with him. By the way, this buck scored 118"
Newarcher
Re: Poached Deer Pic, He would be working that deer off......mowing my grass, waxing my truck or something else. As my Grandad always said to warn us of doing dumb stuff, "my forgiveness and your culpability under the law are two different things". Sorry he got wasted....... Jeramie
Re: Poached Deer Pic, Very Patient! I would have been very angry. Its sometimes hard to forgive and forget. Well played... To bad you didnt have the chance to put him in the freezer the right way.
Gator
Re: Poached Deer Pic, I'm sorry, but if you KNOWINGLY keep a poached buck, and don't notify the DEC, aren't you just as guilty as the individual who shot it? If not, could someone PLEASE explain to me how your not?
c_lou
Re: Poached Deer Pic, I agree with Gator. I think the authorities should have been contacted. Did you tag the deer? That young fellow needs to know his actions have consequences. I feel he is not going to feel the full reprecussions for his actions. OJR
Re: Poached Deer Pic, That is a very low thing for that kid to do! I would have pressed charges! I agree with Gator. Did he tag the deer? Did you tag the deer? If not, both of you have done an illegal act!
Guest Finn
Re: Poached Deer Pic, Sorry to hear this, Jbeck...that has to be the lowest thing I've heard of in sometime. How old is this kid? What did he say when he showed up...I trespassed and shot a buck on your land, did you find it? I would absolutely have pressed charges. The little bugger won't learn without paying a price. I'd go for restitution for all the time and money you spend on deer plus have him fined for trespassing. That's a buck of a lifetime! GWSmith
Re: Poached Deer Pic, So what your saying to this kid or anyone he knows is: "It's OK to poach deer and trespass on my land if all you want is the rack"???? He should not have gotten anything for Illegally Hunting except a visit from the DNR Officer. You set a dangerous precedent for the future. "I Forgive You"...fine...you wont hold it against him in any way in the future. What he did was Illegal...do you have the right to forgive that too??? 123 4/8 P&Y
Re: Poached Deer Pic, If it happened on my land, not only would the county court and local papers be publishing his full name, but they would also publish how much he paid in fines! jbeck, I am very sorry for your disappointment. Newarcher
Re: Poached Deer Pic, [ QUOTE ] No, he doesn't have permision to hunt my ground. He knew it was private ground, but hunted anyway. [/ QUOTE ] I think I would have imposed an either or penalty on him to give him a chance to work off his sins he perpetrated on me. He must not be really smart to go asking the very landowner whose propery he poached if he saw a buck come through here.... jbeck, I won't criticize your actions because I can tell you are all heart. But I am afraid that this punk didn't learn any lessons......oh he may look back when he is 40, 50, or 70 and think "that was a nice guy" but during his operable lifetime, I don't see that he learned anything. Sorry about your buck though.....that is hard to stomach right there. New

jbeck
Re: Poached Deer Pic, In the long run, I hope this boy learns not to do this again. But I also hope he learns forgiveness. If God can forgive me for some of the things I've done, I can frogive this young man. The only law that was broken in this instance was tresspassing. I do hope he learned a lesson though. wtnhunt
Re: Poached Deer Pic, That is a shame. Sure God tells us to forgive, but dont think that boy learned his lesson by you being too nice, and hope this does not lead way to him getting the wrong impression that he will get off and lead to more poaching. I would not have given him the head, and would have at least had the warden warn him.

"I Forgive You"...fine...you wont hold it against him in any way in the future. What he did was Illegal...do you have the right to forgive that too??? [/ QUOTE ] I agree with Gary here. One on one forgiveness is one thing, breaking the laws of the land is another. In my eyes the kid did a lot of things wrong, according to the law and ethics. He trespassed, he poached and he made an unethical 45 yrd shot on an illegal animal. You've just basically given him the proverbial pat on the back and said, all is good... [ QUOTE ] I would not have given him the head, and would have at least had the warden warn him. [/ QUOTE ] Me neither...no way, no how. As Christians, we are not to forget that forgiveness comes with a price. It's called repentance. There first has to be a sincere sorry and a changing of the heart to recieve it. Jesus said, if your brother comes to you and ask for forgiveness, to forgive him. He doesn't say, forgive your brother, even if he doesn't ask. It's one thing to have that forgiveness in your heart for what he has done, but don't be too quick at handing it out, when it's not asked for appropriately, otherwise, it's all for nothing. According to the law, you are now his accomplice.

AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Poached Deer Pic, he broke the law plain and simple, its not a forgive and forget in my book. Call the DNR, if you don't someone else should. That buck survived by sneaking around in the middle of the night, he did not deserve to be shot by someone poaching. If you let him get away with it you are letting a poacher get away with a lifetime of taking deer illegally. Good kid or not, a lesson should be learned, when a hunter puts his finger on the trigger or pulls back that bow they are responsible to follow all the rules with hunting. This kid did not!!! Turkeygirl
Re: Poached Deer Pic, How sad to have to find a buck you've watched come to an end like this. Good job though to stick to what God tells us we should do. I find it hard sometimes when we have neighbors for jerks like we do.
Tetro
Re: Poached Deer Pic, Donating the meat is a nice thing to do. But he hunted land that he didn't have permission for. I would've kept the head, and a few months down the road invite him in for coffee and show off a nice mount on the wall.
