Jeramie
Every year I try and start a thread about tips and tricks for newbies or for anyone to learn from. It typically goes well. Ill start this thread with one tip and everyone follow suit with things you've learned through sweat, tears, and rolling out of bed hours before sane people..... (btw, im running late this year) Tip #1: Deer are very weary and look for movement to help keep them alive. Any little movement they see that is out of place will send a doe blowing through the woods or a buck slipping into the shadows and ruin the hunt. and possibly the spot. Keep in mind while hunting that even the slightest movement of your arms, legs, etc could give you away. Everyone moves in the stand, blind, or ground. Just keep in mind that deer are looking for more than your head. An ill timed nose scratch for foot stomp to wake a sleeping foot will send you to the truck early. jbeck
Re: Tips and Tricks! Tip, if you grunt to a deer to stop it. You should aim a little low for the shot. It is better to hit a deer low in the heart than have one drop at the sound of the string and only get 1 lung or worse enter no mans land above the lungs. I don't know of many deer shot at 20 yards or under that are hit low. Good luck
whitetailkiller
Re: Tips and Tricks! use the wind to your advantage , never use a stand when the wind will blow your scent out to where you are expecting the deer to be when you take your shot.i have a few different ste-ups to allow me to adjust my location based on the wind!!!!!!!!!!! if the wind is very gentle and you can't tell how it's blowing, i use wind checkers (it's a scentfree powder that you squeeze out of the bottle in a cloud)!!! good luck this season!! jbeck
Re: Tips and Tricks! Make sure your grunt tube isn't wrapped around your string before shooting. It only takes once for this to happen to remember it the rest of you life. LOL
hutchies
Re: Tips and Tricks! #1...........Don't try to pull more weight than you can pull back sitting down. Nothing worse than sitting in a tree for 5 hours and go to pull back on a monster and can't draw. 2. This is a follow up to Jeramie's post that started this thread. If it is a windy day you can get away with small movements but if there is no wind you have to be twice as still as normal. If you do have to move go as slow as possible. Guest Finn
Re: Tips and Tricks! Practice with the same clothes you'll be hunting with. You can correct bulky clothes before it costs you a deer.

Stinger-Hunter
Re: Tips and Tricks! If a deer is looking right at you, don't make eye contact, divert your eyes to the ground but still trying to see the deer. When a doe stomps, don't move. She is trying to get you to do something like move, or blink, or see your breath. If a deer looks down and then up again very quickly, they are trying to get you to move. Stay still!!. After a few minutes of this, they will relax a little bit. Only when they are looking away or have walked past you just a bit are you able to get your gun or bow up to take a shot. Also, this works in firearms season better than archery, but if a deer blows at you, blow back. They will usually stop about 50 yards away. Keep them interested. If they blow twice, you blow twice. They will likely be hiding behind a bush or near a tree for safe cover, which is why it works better in firearms than archery season. Take your shot when you have a good one. I've done this numerous times for up to 10 minutes, only it was archery season and the shot opportunity wasn't there - If only I had a shotgun or rifle. Guest KY_Coal_Miner
Re: Tips and Tricks! When deer feel preassure from hunters like the opening day of a season thier first choice for defense is to bed down and look for danger. These deer will stay put until forced to move. One of the best tactics I have found to overcome this is to stay in the tree all day. When the rest of the hunters get into that mid morning lull and decide to to home for lunch they will push these deer most of the time with out knowing it. By staying in the stand even if the deer do not pass by when pushed will start looking for another place to bed. The same holds true for hunters returning in the afternoon. This has helped me to see and kill more deer thatn any other trick I know. Remeber this works best on opening days of a season when the shock of the the hunters is overwhealming the deer. Nothing short of a deer on the ground can get me out of my stand on KY's opening day of modern gun, I pack a lunch and enjoy the show. Smitteken
Re: Tips and Tricks! Get up extra early. This way you can take your time. Rushing makes you forget things and take shortcuts. The extra time allows you to take a slow walk to your spot to avoid working up a sweat. [ QUOTE ] a woman's tampon, the ones with the string, work great for adding scent too and hanging off a limb. Just ask the wife first!!!! [/ QUOTE ] I hear that. last year I used one for that purpose and my fiance (wife now) noticed. She said "Honey, I see you started today" I explained to her what I used it for, thats when she realized what she was getting into.
