Guest deadeye270
This is a two part question: 1. I will have an opportunity to take my first real "out of state" hunting trip next year. We have an opportunity to hunt the milk river in montana. What is the best time to hunt this area. Ex. Early season - still on summer feeding, pre rut, rut,???? 2. When you guys have killed trophys out of state how do you get the cape or mount back home? Do you ship it with dry ice?
HoosierDaddy28
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? Question 1. Can't answer Question 2. If I am going to get it mounted I use whatever taxidermist that the outfitter suggests. That way the outfitter handles all the grunt work. Rhino
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? Question 1. Depends on if you're bowhunting or hunting with a firearm. Question 2. You have 2 choices. Either have a local taxidermist do it from recomendations of either the outfitter or someone in the area......or......have a local taxidermist tan the hide and send it to the taxidermist you prefer. bghunter777
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? WOW you are truly going to have one of the best trips of you life. trust me. A good rule of thumb your best odds of taking a big buck are always when they are out chasing does/looking searching for does to chase. begining of Nov is prob a great time. but with the proper set up early season can be productive also. Hoyt03
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? Best time to go to Milk River is when you have enough money floating around to take a trip. Usually the outfitter will take care of getting your trophy mounted then ship it to you when its done.

Guest deadeye270
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? will will not be using an outfitter. We just got an invitation from a landowner. In that situation how do you get the cape back home. I would feel weird checking in a cape at the airport
coles
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? Definitly go during the rut. It gets crazy. This year the bucks were chasin does real hard and then we had a big snow storm. Which was good and bad. the bad part was that it was snowin soo hard you couldnt see 50 yards but when it let up there was bucks runnin all over the place. So if you are lucky enough to hunt the rut and get a big storm you are in for alot of excitement. But i would recommend the rut which starts around the 1st of november and goes right through the end of rifle season. so i thing that would be your best bet. Guest sheald
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? Hey Deadeye, I took that trip last year, and several of the local towns have taxidermist there. I shot a buck that grossed 168". I got a recommendation from the guide, but I did some checking on my own too. I stopped at the local sporting good shop, and there were several nice mounts. He recommended somebody other than the outfitter, and I choose him. Awesome job and very quick. I was there in Nov the start of the second week and saw a lot of quality bucks. The mount got shipped back to Maine in May of the following year.
Guest deadeye270
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? TTT - Here is some of the problems I am having with deciding on a date to go. There will be a full during the first week of rifle and with most of the deer keying in on ag fields in the afternoon I don't think the hunting will be quite as good. option 1 - 1st-2nd week of nov.... new moon, can use a rifle, will probably catch the rut, but will be REAL COLD option 2 - 2nd week of october.... new moon, still on feeding patterns, nicer temps, must use a bow, big boys may not have showed up during daylight hours yet What do you think? The cooler it is the better it gets em' on their feet it seems.
Guest deadeye270
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? Swamphunter - that true. But I'm a southern boy used to hunting in much milder temps, its no big deal though I can always wear more clothes.
Guest Danbo
Re: Best time to hunt the Milk River??? have the landowner freeze the cape. Bring an insulated box, well packaged on the outside with cardboard. Buy 1lb of dry ice and ship it by FedEx home. The cape will be fine.
