Moving a stand this late in the game?

I think I need to put a stand up on this upper log road that covers 3 heavy trails. This trail system is starting to look like a favorite place to run if something goes amiss down lower.

4 deer now in the past 3 years have run up this one particular trail after being shot. It also seems to be a great path for evening deer travel to the lower fields.

Its fairly steep too.

I guess my deer have not read any of the magazines that profess path of least resistance theory. LOL

I have other stands around this location that cover the same trails down closer to feild level but they are all very wind picky and I have been busted recently by switching winds, etc.

This one spot is pretty high up and almost a corner on this hill side so just about all wind directions are good for it except a north wind.

I have NEVER moved or hung a stand during an open season on my property so I am very wary I will upset the deer if I do.

I know folks do this all the time but this stand move will require the use of my ATV. Way to many ladder stick sections to carry and my stand wieghts about 60#+ so its not a throw on your back fold up stand.

I use the winch to raise and lower my stands (home made all welded steel. Super DUPER heavy duty-LOL)

Do you feel an ATV will push the deer out of there for days or just that morning?

Do it man, no problem. I move stands all the time during the season, matter of fact I cant imagine NOT doing it at least once or twice during the coarse of a season.

There is a nice coldfront coming through the northeast, pick a rainy, windy day this week, sneak in there hang it and get out. Give it a few days, and then you should be good to go.

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

yeah, I've moved them too. Like BB11 said, just watch when you do it. Off weather days are good and I usually do it around noon when deer aren't moving.

that being said, don't go in there and make all kind of racket, but you'll be fine.

I've hunted a few new areas and I've had to move my stand to fine tune the spot I was in...its produced for me as well.

i owuld move it also. but you better wait a few days . it would be better to move it right before it rains. that way the rain will wash it down really well.

the ATV might spook some deer at first, but they will come back. just wait a few days before you hunt it.

i moved my stand last friday morning and hunted it friday afternoon. i shot a doe out of it that same day. but i forgot to use rubber boots while hanging the stand. those does smelled where i walked that morning and acted a little skittish, but they couldnt find me. i say go for it.

Shoot Strong

yeah i just moved one sunday as well. If your using permanent stands your going to have to do some adjusting to the time of year. I had this one stand set on the edge of a field they were hitting during summer pattern, well thats about shot so I moved to catch them coming out of the bedding zone in the evening. Hung it sunday plan to hunt it in the next few days. very good advice above

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

This is my main issue.

The ATV.

I swear folks, and some here can attest to this, my home made stands are crazy heavy. This is why I do 99% of all stand moves during August. I can use the atv at will and give the spot months to clean out or whatever.

I know the trails the deer use during the hunting season and during the summer. I have like 10 stands hanging everywhere and on the heaviest of the heavy trails they use this time of year.

The last minute movement does not bother me its how I have to do it. Plus I only get so many days off to hunt so I will be hunting the sasem day I move and hang it.

I Plan to hunt a stand about 150 yards away from this spot though. Maybe the ATV will redirect deer over there that would use this spot. (???)

Plus I will have my 5 yo daughter with me since I can not drop her off until noon. Luckily we are due in some rain on and off this last 1/2 week and I have 3 days off to hunt.

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

I say do it Shawn. Like Tony said you probably need to let it rest a few days first before you hunt it though since you have to use an ATV to get all that iron up to where you need it. No sense wondering what it might have been like to hunt there after the season is over. Get it in there now and you'll still have plenty of time to hunt the new stand position before the season is over even if you let it rest for a week before you hunt it the 1st time.

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

Oh trust me I am all about being proactive if the need calls for it.

I only have 75 acres to hunt and 40 of it is open feilds. So the woods portion is not huge.

I have many many stands hung and every single one of them are there due to heavily used trails, 2 or 3 in most cases, and deer are seen under these stands historically year after year.

I guess my main worry is blowing all the potential deer off my land doing this and ruining my 3 days off to hunt. LOL

Sucks not having or getting vacation.

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

Yep same here. I have already had to move my stand twice this season. During 2nd weekend I was out I moved it to a different tree on the deer trail because there was not enough cover in the one I was in before. Then 2 days later I moved it again because I found out that loggers were cutting trees down along the trail I was on so it was worthless to hunt from it.

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

How many times do you guys hunt a stand to know it's no good and needs to be moved. The reason I asked is I hung a stand sunday and hunted it this mournin(tues). The deer walked in the same way I did and all walked the other way. I think they smelled me. I was thinking about moving my stand above the trails they came in to the point where I would not have to cross paths. I am just worried I am doing it do early and might want to hunt a few more days but i figure this rain would be a perfect oppurtunity..

Any advice?

Re: Moving a stand this late in the game?

Shawn,

Just do it. I doubt that it will spook the deer, even for the evening hunt. Worse case, you will just have to hunt the stands on the east side of the property for a day.
