muggs
I'm looking at muzzleloaders but since I'll only be using it a few times a year I don't need a top of the line gun and I don't want to spend a fortune. Any suggestions?
jerdanmagic
Re: a decent startup gun Check out the lower end Thompson ML's. I want to say that they have an Omega that starts around $250.
wtnhunt
Re: a decent startup gun Dont know if wal mart still carries them or not, but the tc black diamonds are great muzzleloaders for the money.
WABS
Re: a decent startup gun Right now you could order a top end gun "Austin Halleck" for the same price. They are having a going out of business sale -- something to consider. See the thread posted Austin Halleck!!
Jeramie
Re: a decent startup gun Look at the break overs. They are ten times easier to clean. Trust me on this one. Ive had several inlines and for the cheaper rifles youve got to work to clean them. The breakovers are like cleaning a single shot shotgun. Personally id say take a look at the NEF (New England Firearms) ML. They are awesome accurate and great guns. You can also look at CVA Optima. Youre looking at roughly $200 for either one. (give or take a little). If that is still to rich for your blood try the CVA Wolf. The triggers are junk but they are plenty accurate. They too have a 1/28 twist rate. It basically is a cheaper model of the Optima from what I can tell. They are just over $120.

If it wasnt one of those it would have to be a break over.
Hoyt03
Re: a decent startup gun Simple: Get a TC Omega and you will not be disappointed. You can get the stainless barrel camo stock thumbhole for 399.00 right now. Awesome gun, do a search for Omega and see all the great reviews
WGumz
Re: a decent startup gun Muggs, Reward has one for sale in the classified sectioin, 45 cal. Knight disc elite for 100.00. Seems like a heck of deal for that gun, and to me, a 45 cal is not that much different than a 50 cal if you are going to only use it a couple of times a year. Might want to take a look at it. billkay
Re: a decent startup gun There is a used Knight .45 cal for sale in the classifieds for $100. Top of the line gun at a rock bottom price.

Jeramie
Re: a decent startup gun Hey Muggs.... Here are the two I would strongly suggest for a cheap price. Personally I would take the H&R (NEF) first. H&R Sidekick $170 at Bass Pro Click Here $209 At Bass Pro (CVA Optima) Click Here
Hoosierbuck
Re: a decent startup gun I'd jump all over the Knight .45 in the classifieds. Heck, I might anyway, and I have four ML's already! I have that gun in stainless, and it's a bit more of a pain to clean than a break open, but it's a shooter!!!! I am using 3-50 grain Pyro pellets and a powerbelt and have outstanding groups out past 150... HB

johnf
Re: a decent startup gun If I didn't get that knight, I would probibly go with the nef. They are very reliable, my 3 are very accurate, and the price is great. Also, if you need/want another caliber I would go ahead and get the NEF Rifle and then get the ML barrel for it. They are only $85 and you can have the trigger adjusted to 3lbs for free when you send the reciever in to havethe barrel fitted.
Jeramie
Re: a decent startup gun John is right. What you would have to do with the NEF (or H&R) is buy a rifle. NEF will sale other barrels but they have to fit for them inhouse. They will only step down too meaning if you want a ML and a rifle combo you have to buy a Rifle and have the ML barrel fitted for it. You cant go from a .223 to a .30-06 but if you buy teh .30-06 you can have it fitted for a .223. Buy a fun round like a .25-06, .243, .22-50 and then get the ML'er barrel for it..... Btw, my next NEF purchace will probably be the .204.
