Crossbow hunting was legalized last year in Virginia and I went out and puchaced a Horton XL150 this year.I have caught a lot of grief and negative comments about this did I do something wrong by puchasing a crossbow.Lots of hardcore bowhunters have said I should of just bought another gun because thats all a crossbow is.I just wanted to enjoy another type of hunting.I would like some positive feedback for once.Is my crossbow evil???

Re: Is my crossbow EVIL???

Crossbow is legal as archery equipment in TN now too. Been some pretty heated debates over crossbow use as traditional archery gear in here over the past. I personally will not use one so long as I am able to use my compound, but hey if it is what you want to shoot, go for it. When we were at the local proshop last week looking at some bows for my wife, three different people who came in during the short time we were there looking for crossbow bolts or were having crossbow bolts fletched, so there are obviously guys out there who are using them.

Re: Is my crossbow EVIL???

Crossbow evil? No. Evil might be a good description of the negative attitudes you're getting though. I'll bet some of those same guys are shooting compounds with 80% or better letoffs. A lot of traditional bowhunters still refer to compounds as string guns. These so called hard core bowhunters should have been around when compounds were 1st introduced. As far as I'm concerned if they are legal I don't have a problem with it.

I personally prefer a compound over a crossbow because from the crossbows I've seen, I can shoot a compound as good as a guy with a crossbow and crossbows are somewhat limited in range. The bolts slow down too much for accurate shots over 30 yards to suit me and loose too much energy since the bolts are so much lighter. I have shot better groups beyond 30 yards shooting targets with 2 other crossbow hunters before. As you know, crossbows are real heavy too compared to a compound. The only advatange I can see is you don't have to draw it. Of course compounds with high letoffs allow you to draw and hold those suckers at full draw for a long time. Plenty of time to draw before a deer approaching is in range and you can pick your times to draw when the deer is behind cover. You sure can't do that with traditional archery equipment. There are positives and negatives to both but as long as I can shoot either my compound and/or recurve, I'll stick to hunting with them rather than lugging around a heavy crossbow.

Evil ?no. Chosen by me? No

A way for the state and companies to generate/ spread the current share of money around? Sure. Could that be a bad thing? Absolutely!!

Who in business would turn down money right?

It's your thing and that is ok. Hunt with it. It's legal

Don't worry about that some others say. I guess.

Is that positive enough?? LMBO

It is a great tool to harvest game animals with and has kept many in the sport of throwing arrows.

Re: Is my crossbow EVIL???

Understand, I've got a real hard time with folks who bad mouth crossbows. I've got a disabled friend whose car was destroyed while she hunted because she was hunting with a crossbow. Yep, these "ETHICS HEROES" destroyed the car of a disabled female. Her tires were slashed, windows broken, fenders dented and "CHEATER", "CROSSBOW HUNTER" was spray painted on the car.

If they bowhunt during gun season, (and I do). They shouldn't feel threatened in the least bit by a crossbow. Crossbows aren't rifles. Not even close.

Bow hunt because you like to. Not because it gives you some perceived advantage or a special season. The folks that toute it as "the only challenging way" also tick me off. As far as I'm concerned they are just bowhunting because it gives them an excuse to FAIL!

I just got back from Africa. Four of the eight hunters in our group were bowhunters. The rest were rifle hunters. The Kudu I got, came off a heavily gun hunted concession and I took him with a bow. I had hunted, bow hunting only concessions for days and not seen a decent bull. I know plenty of "purist" bowhunters who would have never tried to compete with the rifle hunters. Heck, the sign looked good, I decided to go for it. It paid off, big time.

I shot a gemsbok with a rifle and still enjoyed the hunt immensely. I rifle hunt too. I've got little patience for those who have the "One Way Only" mentality. Hunting is supposed to be fun, not a contest between who does it the more challenging way.

I really wish some folks would stop pissing and moaning about these kind of things and JUST HUNT!! If they'd spend as much time looking for deer as they do excuses they'd actually kill something!

I love my Horton bow. It's not a gun, doesn't shoot like a gun and shouldn't be associated with a gun. Those who do are obviously ignorant to the limitations and drawback to a crossbow. Know your bow, know it's limitations, practice and have fun shooting newly legal archery equiptment.

Re: Is my crossbow EVIL???

There are a number of people that seem to think if you use a cross bow your not an archer. Let me disagree, there is also a group of people that think compounds are unfair, release aids unfair. You still need to get close. I hunted with a man in Maine that used a long bow, cedar shaft arrows, with flint broad heads bought out of Texas. Hey to each his own, I'll stick with my carbons, compound release aid shooting gismo. LOL Good luck

Re: Is my crossbow EVIL???

Don't listen to them bud. Up here crossbows are more common than compounds! I use both. They're both archery, but different kinds of archery. That's like guns. Shotguns, Muzzleloaders, Rifles... they all go bang, they all shoot a projectile using gunpowder and they're all classified as firearms.

Nothing different then archery. Crossbows, compounds, longbows... they all shoot arrows using a string under pressure. Therefore they're all classified as archery weapons.

If it's legal, go for it. Don't let people put you down over owning and using a crossbow. wink.gif

Re: Is my crossbow EVIL???

Here in NC crossbow hunting is illegal unless you have a handicap that prevents you from pulling back a compound or recurve. That being said, if they legalized it here across the board, I would be one of the first to buy one.

On a side note, NC requires you to provide a valid handgun purchase permit to purchase a crossbow. A little backwards in IMHO, but this is NC. crazy.gif
