Good evening everyone. I am new to the Realtree forum and just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. This is my second season, no harvest so far but I hope to get one or two over Thanksgiving weekend in West Virginia.

I live in NJ and grew up with a grandfather and two uncles dedicated to hunting traditions, although I only learned fishing and shooting from my grandfather. He was awesome, he used to tie his own flies and could cast for trout all day with an old bamboo rod he had from childhood. He was a Czech immigrant, high-school dropout and skilled laborer who taught me more about life by the time I was 16 than most people figure out by 30. Can you tell I miss him?

I never had the chance to learn hunting as a girl, but last year I decided I would get my license and brush up on my shooting skills and get into the field. I spent several glorious winter afternoons in a ground blind waitng for deer that never showed, but I took away visions of lovely winter birds feeding at the base of 80-year old apple trees, that quiescent smell that is winter-air and the sound of snow crunching and squeaking beneath my boots as I made my way home. Hunting is so much more than harvesting game; it enlivens the senses and awakens primitive feelings that stir the soul in ways that few activities or experiences ever do.

My ultimate goal is to segue from rifle and shotgun hunting altogether and go all the way with traditional archery equipment. I am a bit of a Luddite in many aspects of my life, and overall, something just calls me to go as "native" as possible with my hunting experiences. For now, I am content with using a shotgun (in NJ only shotgun is allowed) or rifle (elsewhere I am not so restricted) to become accustomed to harvesting, gutting, skinning out and butchering game. I have all the time in the world to become expert with a stick-bow while I learn some of the fundamentals of harvesting and caring for meat post-kill.

I hope to be posting here often to seek advice and share stories. Thank you all for reading and I hope to be able to tell you all something good soon.

Welcome aboard, nice to see I'm not alone as a new member. This forum feels like an honest, trustworthy place to hunt,so good luck on the bow huntin.

I tried bow hunting for 4 years and almost starved to death,so had to go back to fire pole.We are lucky up here in N.S. we can pretty well hunt with anything.

Good luck and most of all "enjoy mother nature" thats what it all about. cool.gif

Hey sweetie I am new here too! I love the Realtree bunch so I had to join. I think we will like it here. I LOVE to bowhunt. In fact I rarely hunt any other way. I hope you enjoy it also. It's like nothing you have ever done before.

Thanks for the welcome, everyone. I am just a few weeks away from my first hunt this year, in West Virginia over Thanksgiving weekend.

Oh, and I found a bow! I was at Cabelas last weekend and browsed the archery section. It is very, very difficult to find a bow to test in any store, usually the pull weight is set 60# or higher, which is impossible for me. But I saw a nice economical Parker Bow package that was set to 50# and it drew back nice and easy. My BF, a very experienced bowhunter, agreed it would be a great bow to get me started. I am going to pick it up next spring. I'd love to have it now but with the holidays coming and money being tight, I have to wait a while to spend $$$ on myself. I am excited!

I am looking forward to sharing my WV stories. Wish me luck!
