Remember your first hunt?

I can remember when I went on my very first hunt. I was SOOOO sure I'd get a deer.

It was Thanksgiving morning. Temps were in the 20's. crazy.gif

My husband had bought me a pop up blind and we had set it all up days before. I remember listening to the woods "wake up" and feeling like my hands and feet were going to freeze solid.

And EVERYTHING sounded like a deer walking to me. Those dang squirrels make a lot of racket!!!! mad.gifgrin.gif

I was also terrified to move even the slightest bit for fear that the deer would see me. So sitting completely still in the freezing cold turned out to be quite painful. crazy.gif ( I've since learned you can move around somewhat...LOL) Then the unavoidable "let down" of not getting a deer that day.

I had a LOT to learn. I didn't get a deer that year until the very last day of the season. smirk.gif

Re: Remember your first hunt?

I was 10 years old and I had gotten a 30-30 for my birthday.

We went out on opening morning and I was with my Dad. That was the first and only time I hunted with my Dad. We walked along the river and never say anything for about 1 mile. He said we should go back to the car, so we started back real slow. We were just about there and there stood this small buck about 50 yards from us!

I up and shot! It went down and that was it!

That was 55 years ago!!

I'll never forget it!

Re: Remember your first hunt?

That 1st deer hunt sure is memorable. I was 13 years old so that’s 39 years ago. I went with my father to my 2nd cousin’s house for the Thanksgiving holidays. Things were a little different back then. His wife got up before us and fixed us breakfast before we took off for about a 50 mile drive to where we hunted.

They dropped me off in the dark at a homemade treestand that had enough room in it to stretch out and take a nap but I never did. I was too keyed up in anticipation of what might unfold that day. About all I saw were squirrels and plenty of them. Like you said Andrea they made so much noise you just knew it had to be a bigger critter than that. I was told to stay put until they came back and got me. I did and never realized so much time went by while taking it all in. They came back at 2:30 in the afternoon expecting to find me asleep. I guess I surprised them being wide awake looking in their direction as they approached. As we were walking out my 2nd cousin made the comment that I’d be a hunter. When I asked what he meant my father told me the reason they left me on the stand so long was to see what I’d do. As it turned out they were hunting not too far from me at all.

That afternoon my father and I sat together on a power line sharing the hunt together. I must have asked him a 1,000 questions that afternoon. We never did see a deer but it sure was special spending that time togther with my father.

I killed my 1st deer the following season during the Thanksgiving holidays.

Yep Andrea…hard to forget that 1st day deer hunting no matter how much time goes by.

Re: Remember your first hunt?

Yep.

Squirrel: Dad bought me a 20-ga single shot. I had been out with him before but I was 13 and he told me I was plenty old enough to go out on my own. I had been handling guns all my life (we were taught well).

I went straight out to the woods where a poor little gray squirrel wasnt quite as smart as I was..... Close, but not quite. wink.gif He hid on the side of a tree about 15' off a fence line. I didnt know the range of my new gun so I walked to the fence line and have him a load of #6. He looked more like a strainer. Ive had a passionate love of hunting tree rats every since.

Deer: I turned roughly 14. I inherited my uncles 30-30. Once again, dad said youre a big boy. Use your head. I hit the fields. I knew where deer had been feeding so I slipped in a long draw up a steep hill. I crawled over the edge of a hill and sure enough there they were, feeding. A small buck (closest to me) noticed me. He blew and they all looked up. I knew it was now or never so I put him in the sights and missed horribly. To this day im not really sure why.... regardless, it was awesome.

Re: Remember your first hunt?

My first year deer hunting(18 years old) I hunted hard for three weeks to get a deer with no success. Was getting really discouraged and on the last day I shot my biggest buck to date. I was hooked from then on. I will always remember seeing that big buck running through the trees at me. I was shaking something fierce(from buck fever), I'll never now how I hit it(20 yards).

I then had a few years of learning ahead of me before I started shooting bucks consistently. I will always remember that cold December day for the rest of my life, and even if some day I shoot a bigger buck, that first one will always hold a special place in my heart!

Re: Remember your first hunt?

Yes i sure do and it was 45 years ago. It was opening day and i was hunting with my dad and older brother. We went early to get a hunting spot and parked there until daybreak. We walked in and just stopped short of an apple orchid and dad walked in to check it out and came back and said there was a buck under one of the trees so he told me to wait while he and my older brother tryed to sneak up on him to get a shot. I was dissapointed so i started to walk a small trail i found off to the right of the orchid. As luck would have it they spooked the deer out to me and we almost walked into each other. I shot and harvested my first buck about 15 min. of my first hunt. cool.gifOne week later i went with them to another location and got my second to fill my tags out for the year. smile.gif

Re: Remember your first hunt?

It was way back in 1999 I was a mear 31 years old. Yes I know you think that may be young, but I was confident. We had always been around guns and I was a pretty good shot, but we never really hunted. We were a fishing family and went pretty much every weekend that it wasn't snowing or raining. It was the year after my grandfather had died and my mom game me his old Marlin 30-30. Ledgend was that he got it the day he came back from WWII in San Fransisco. I dated it ealier this year and it was manufactured in 1951. It's not the same story, but it was still granpa's gun. He used to take us out and let us shoot it when we were kids and all of the boys wanted it, so it was a pretty big deal when mom gave it to me. I figured if I had a deer rifle, I might as well hunt. I got some army pants, a plad flannel shirt and a grunt call and climbed up in an old oak tree about 300 yard into the woods from one of my relitives places. I stayed out there all day honking that stupid thing and didn't see anything. With about 2 minutes of good light left one of my nepheus came to the base of the tree and started talking to me and I started down the tree. When I turned to go down the ladder I looked over and saw this monster doe about 100 yards away, I took carefull aim and pulled the trigger.

We didn't wait for a second to go recover her (didn't know any better) when I got to the spot where I shot her, I realized it was more like 25 yards away and she wasn't quite the monster I thought she was. She had run about 10 yards and dropped. We looked down at her and didn't have a clue what to do. So I picked her up by both hind feet an threw her over my shoulder and took her out of the woods.

She didn't have any spots left, but she sure was tender. blush.gif

Re: Remember your first hunt?

I will never forget my first hunt.

I was 7 and my brother was 9 years old.

My dad and neighbor took us out to hunt pheasant while we were living in Idaho.

My dad and the neighbor had both been drinking heavily and were both plastered.

They had my brother and I wait at one end of the cornfield until they got around to the other end and whistled at us.

Both of us, armed with our Red Ryder BB guns, slowly walked down the corn rows toward them.

They were using us as cheap dogs,

hoping we would flush some pheasants on our way down.

Thank God no pheasants flushed.

On the way home, my brother and I waited in the car for over two hours waiting for my dad and his buddy to have a cold one (or two, or more) in a roadside bar, before driving home.

My brother and I were very lucky to get home safely that evening.

I hope everyone else can also see what was wrong with this picture.

Re: Remember your first hunt?

I was 13 with an old recurve. The nocks back then didn't clip to the string, so my arrow was laying on the ground next to me. Somehow, a doe showed up 15 yards from me, then snorted when I went for my arrow.

Had never heard that before and it was nearly a long walk back home to clean my drawers. blush.gif

Re: Remember your first hunt?

I was 4 years old. I went back on the hill with the dogs. I tried to climb a tree and my foot got stuck. It was about 30mins later went my dads friend came along the hill and seen me. He took me home and my dad asked me where I had went. I told him I was hunting Green Bears. True story.

Anyway my first real hunt was squirrel hunting with my friend Sid. He asked me if I wanted to go with him one day after school. We didnt soot at anything that day but after that I was hooked. One week later I asked my mom if I could buy a .22. I got my first squirrel about a week after I got the gun.

Re: Remember your first hunt?

My first time to be in the stand i was about 6 and was in the stand with my dad he was the one hunting and killed a nice liittle 8 point.

My first time to hunt was when i was 10 with a 4-10 slug gun but we didnt have any luck.

Finally my first kill I was hunting on a pipeline by myself. My uncle let me hunt one of his stands and when he dropped me off that afternoon he told me the only rule was don't shoot the doe or her yearling that came to his feeder everyday. Well sure enough about 15 minutes after he dropped me off out popped a doe as soon as she got out of the woods i shot her, then out ran the yearling. He didn't get mad though because he found out it was my first deer so everything turned out ok
