The_Kat
Whata ya think? I was thinking about doing a little rattling....not too loud or agressive, and some light calling today with the cold front coming in. Do you all think it's a bad idea or not? Jeramie
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? Nope, it will work fine if your populations (doe to buck ratio) are right. They are starting to rut but even before that bucks are sparing in anticipation. LIGHT (and I mean Light for seconds at a time) rattling is ok. As far as calling, I had an 8-point come in HOT to the True Talker this week. I never got a shot off but he sure was aggressive. They communicate all year long anyway so calling, but not overcalling, is pretty much acceptable any time of year. That doesnt mean they will respond but they wont bolt either. Im hearing they are starting to get hot everywhere so take a "Can" along. With all this cold air moving through, the reports of glands aready stinking, and the buck that was already acting hot it wouldnt surprise me if there werent a few rutting right now..... The_Kat
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? I don't think they're getting hot, but pre-rut signs are kicking in. It's way to early for the full blown rut....

Guest Rackrus
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? Calling is like fishing, some times they bite and somtimes they don't. Never a bad ideal to call anytime of the year, but keep it soft. I've rattled bucks in the first wekend before, it even surprised me. Good luck. Pick a spot. c_lou
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? After he left, the 10 pointer that came in, I heard him lightly fighting with another buck. Very light and very short. I would say it may work. Probably out of curiosity more than anything.

arrow32
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? Depends on the deer and your area really. I would wait a while longer.
Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? I have already had a doe come come in to investigate light rattling. I wonder if a buck was in the near distance just watching that night.
need2hunt
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? I watched 5 different buck fights this morning... don't think theres anything wrong with doing some rattling. As for calling I don't really know of a bad time to call. nutz4bucks
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? bucks are sparring lightly so go for it softly, and for calling use some social grunts and maybe a can call or two the ruts a comin..they probally won't be running right in but you might get there curiousity... Jodyslilbro
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? Well the "can" is a great idea. I mean 3rd week into the season and I called in some does followed by a couple bucks. I also brought in a spike from a light rattle
Stinger-Hunter
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? I brought in a small 1 1/2 6 pointer last week with a few calls from the CAN. He walked 10 yards from my stand. I may do some light rattling and use the CAN again.
Guest Danbo
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? I think its a little early yet. Wait just a little bit longer. Too aggressive and to early, you'll see lots of bucks tails.
ksdeerhunter03
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? Heck no, I rattled in 2 bucks last night, younger bucks but came in looking for the fight.
wtnhunt
Re: Is it too early to rattle and call? With the cooler weather kicking in I did a little calling with the grunt call yesterday. Had a little 4 pointer in one of our plots and let out a few grunts, he looked up then went right back to eating as he worked his way across the plot. Might try a little more calling and possibly light some light tickling of the antlers this afternoon down by the river.
