Nope, it will work fine if your populations (doe to buck ratio) are right. They are starting to rut but even before that bucks are sparing in anticipation. LIGHT (and I mean Light for seconds at a time) rattling is ok.

As far as calling, I had an 8-point come in HOT to the True Talker this week. I never got a shot off but he sure was aggressive. They communicate all year long anyway so calling, but not overcalling, is pretty much acceptable any time of year. That doesnt mean they will respond but they wont bolt either.

Im hearing they are starting to get hot everywhere so take a "Can" along. With all this cold air moving through, the reports of glands aready stinking, and the buck that was already acting hot it wouldnt surprise me if there werent a few rutting right now.....

Calling is like fishing, some times they bite and somtimes they don't. Never a bad ideal to call anytime of the year, but keep it soft. I've rattled bucks in the first wekend before, it even surprised me. Good luck. Pick a spot.

I have already had a doe come come in to investigate light rattling.

I wonder if a buck was in the near distance just watching that night.

With the cooler weather kicking in I did a little calling with the grunt call yesterday. Had a little 4 pointer in one of our plots and let out a few grunts, he looked up then went right back to eating as he worked his way across the plot.

Might try a little more calling and possibly light some light tickling of the antlers this afternoon down by the river.
