what is up with the IDNR's new tagging system..Last year we saw the check stations being eliminated....this year we dont even have real tags...I dont get it..Are they trying to make it easier for people to poach deer? At least last year with the old tags it was pretty much impossible to reuse tags because they stuck together...this year its just a peice of paper? i dont get it...It kinda seems like the state is wanting people to poach to start thinning more deer out...I hope this isnt the case and i wont that isnt the result...just makes me wonder...Whats everyone else think..

Also i know checking in your deer was kinda a hassill but it did help in keeping poaching to a minimum.

poachers are going to poach with or without a tag.i think the new tags are alot cheeper for the state. i dont like the call in sys. i rather go to a check station to hear the storys if nothing else. but things are changing and not much we can do about it. good lock this yr.

Yea,the new bow tags are a joke, as is the call in system.

I've heard a bunch of stories about people shooting bucks and calling them in as does. With Illinois 2 buck a year rule this still leaves them their buck tags and I guess they feel that since they called it in and got a verefication # it's not really poaching.

The poloticians said eliminating the check stations frees the Rangers and officers up to eliminate poaching, but our shotgun check stations were run by volunteers and not officers to begin with so I'm not sure how they can make that claim.

I guess the thing I miss most about the check stations is that it was part of the Illinois deer hunting tradition as far as I was concerned. I really miss going to the check stations and seeing everyone's deer and hearing the stories.

I do think that dishonest people are going to be dishonest no matter what, when it comes to checking in deer. Unfortunately, this systems just makes it easier for people to be dishonest.

I don't think they will ever change back to a check station format.

I agree with this. That was alot of the fun of my first kill. I really miss it. I think the new tags are a joke. I hope the shotgun tags don't go to the same.

I do agree that our governor has made dramatic changes within our state, especially in the DNR. I don't like Baloneyvich anymore than the next guy and probably dislike him more than most because until we get a new administration, I can't get my dream job as a DNR biologist. But remember, the state was left in shambles after Criminal Ryan left office.

I too liked the check station system. I worked the check station in Randolph Co. for two years while going to SIUC. I loved it. Awesome experience for someone wanting to be a biologist AND I got to see a lot of big deer. I was skeptical of the new system, but have found it very convenient for those who live a distance from the check station, especially if your county only has one like mine does.

I'm not a big fan of the archery tags this year because if you get your license, combo archery tag, and a archery turkey tag, it's like 2 feet long. And you've got to provide your own way of attaching the tag to the animal (but that not a big deal because the plastic zip-ties are pretty cheap and do a great job).

Like others have said, poachers will poach no matter what. Obviously the new check in system hasn't deterred many people from checking in their deer because if I remember correctly, we had a record harvest (archery I think) last year.

I've heard a rumor that in the future, firearm tags will be able to be purchased over the counter for in-state residents. Not sure about the validity of that.

I believe ilhunter1986 and I have discussed this subject in person just a few weeks ago.

The IDNR has a new call in tagging system too. It's even automated. Stupid politicians. I don't know how long we've had sticky transport tags but we still have them here.
