Strutting.......Hen???

Hey everybody, went out this morning and as I was sitting there, I hear turkeys yelping and clucking, and they fly down about 60 yds from me. They all looked like hens and then I saw a beard. Now I know that there are such things as bearded hens, but the wierdest part was that the bird with the beard started trying to strut. It never got into a full strut, always a half or 3/4. I was just wondering if hens could strut or if I need to get my eyes checked because it really was a tom?

Re: Strutting.......Hen???

As I type this...I have 12 turkeys walking acrossed the yard.

1/2 of them at one time or another has puffed out their feathers (1/2-3/4 strut like) to dry out their feathers. I personally never witnessed a hen go into "full" strut...but I guess anything is posible.

Re: Strutting.......Hen???

Last spring my daughter and I were hunting in the Black Hills of South Dakota and had a hen come to us in FULL strut for over 70 yards. It was so unlike typical hen behavior that it may have fooled less experienced hunters into thinking it was a tom. It continued this full strut demostration for over 10 minutes and within 10 yards at times. Definitely a hen though.

One of the coolest things I've seen in the turkey woods. laugh.gif

Re: Strutting.......Hen???

Me and my Dad seen one strutting from the road the one day. We put the binocs up, but it wouldn't turn so we could see it, so we grab are gear and stuff. Look back out in the field no strutter. Just a hen standing in the same spot. Then she puffed up again. Pretty Cool, yet a little disappointing at the time. lol
