I will ATTEMPT to save AJ's fingers. grin.gif

If you have a high-quality scope, there is no need for 50mm. If you go the cheaper route, may want to look into the 50mm. $150-$350 is a very broad range. I think you can get a Nikon Monarch for around $300.....nice glass IMO.

Leupold has some of their bottom-end scopes for around $300 as well. I think either of these scopes will get the job done wink.gif

I ain't AJ, but this is my view. I would rather spend a little extra dough and get the smaller objective.

Oh yeah....My buddy has a pair of Nikon Monarch binos....I have some $50 Bushnells. He has the 40mm while I have the 50mm, yet his is brighter in low-light conditions. His 40 really puts my 50 to shame!! Just thought you might like to know.....

I have and use Burris Fulfield II, 3X9X40. They are very clear and gather light very good. I also use the Pentax, Whitetail in 3X9X42. It is a very good scope and gathers light very good.

I will put either of these against a Leupold for clearity and light gathering.

Price range on these is from $150 to $300.

Personally, I hate 50mm objectives on scopes. Most of the affordable scopes with 50mm lenses are less than desirable anyhow. the main reason I dislike the 50mm lenses is they are too big. They have to be mounted with High or Ex-High rings and that can place my face too high on the gun, not allowing a good cheek weld to the stock for optimum shooting, specifically at moving targets. I like the 44mm lenses the best. They are the best compromise between large bell for light transmission and still able to use lower mounting than the biggins. A 40mm Leupold VX-III, Pentax, or Burris Signature, will be brighter than a 50mm Simmons. So size does not matter as much as quality.

For $350 you can get a Burris Signature 3-9x40, Doctor Optics 3-9x40, Pentax Whitetails Unlimited 3-9x50, Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 or the Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x40. Any of these will fit your needs well.

Sorry to tell you this Thundar7, but if you paid $100 for an 8pt. you got ripped. I got one at Walmart for $49 and it wasn't on sale. Also the light transmition isn't even close to a Nikon or Leupold. When hunting with the 8pt I left the woods 15 minutes befor the end of legal light because I didn't feel like any shot I made with that scope at that time would be ethical. On the other hand a week later using a Nikon pro-staff I sat on my stand until the last legal second. I could have easily taken a deer with confidence for another 20-30 minutes.

I love my Nikon pro staff, my next scope will be either a Nikon buckmaster or a Leupold.

Buy a Leupold & be done with it. The best scopes within your $$ range on the market as far as I am concerned. And Made in the good old USA!

I switched over to Leupold on almost all my rifles and have never regreted it. I have owned Burris(fullfields)........nice scopes but not as clear as my Leupolds and heavy. I have owned simmons (JUNK!).........and will NEVER make that mistake again. smirk.gif I have had good luck with old Redfields & stil own one on my Rem 7600, a 2-7x that has held up well so it stays. Not as bright as my Leupolds but it holds zero well so it stays. I have also owned varrious other scopes from Bushnell, swift and a few forgotten names. None of which are worth much for the long hall. If you buy cheap with scopes.........you get junk. Bottom line. smirk.gif I learned this the hard way.

I went out with intentions on buying a Nikon Monarch 4-12x for my 25-06 a few years back. But after comparring it side by side to the new Leupold VX-II 4-12............there was no comparrison. The Leupold was the brighter & better scope. So my Ruger No1 25-06 is topped with the Leupold.
