Guest MarylandQDMA
hi all, I just thought I would post this and see what you all havee to say. I have been shooting Precision Rifle qt bullets now for a few months, in 195gr. 40cal. for my 50 cal encore with 100 grs. of pyrodex pellets. at the range using only a bipod wile in prone possion, I was able to get a 1" group at 100 yards. so I'm good to go. take it into the woods and shoot at 3 deer two at 50 yards and one at 100/120. out of the 3 I had one drop where it stood (1 of the 50 yarder's) the others ran off. chaulked it up to a miss. however I was talking to a guy at PR today, about the qt's he told me that they are designed not to pass thru. this said if a deer was not hit well or high, I would assume there would be little or no blood. or does the bullet create one mother of an opening that you would get good blood regardless. or regardless of where you hit then (vitals) the shock wave drops them where they stand. also he was telling me that the dead centers are designed to "exit" I had him send me a pack of them to try out as well. what would you prefer, a pass thru (dead center) or mass shock (qt's) when hunting deer? me personely would like the pass thru. I want to see as much blood as possible. that way I know if the hit was good or not. you? Frank
lonewolf5347
Re: Precision Rifle bullets mdqc01: I had the same problem last year in PA. opening gun season QT"S 45 350 grain blue poly tip in 54 cal. The big 8 pointer shot about 75 yards ,I did hit it high broadside and caught the 3 and 4 rib ,deer did a 180 tail down and was gone after the smoke cleared.I was using 80 grains of triple 777 with the qt's,no snow on the ground ,went to the spot the deer stood and found a couple drops of blood .Make a long storie short the deer went another 75 yards before it went down ,took a good tracking job to locate the deer using the kick up leaves ,the QT 45 did relesase all it energy inside the chest area and never did exit, that was the reason for the poor blood trail. Now early in the season I used the silver light 300 green tip on a big doe at the same distance same powder load ,the exit hole was like a soft ball the deer took two steps and was down.I called precision and they stated the same remarks the bullet is design not to exit ,the silver lighting will exit .I think a bullet that will punch two holes would be easy to recover.I like the silver lighting but there prices are getting a little out of hand. tedicast
Re: Precision Rifle bullets Personally, I prefer a pass thru for the good blood trail. No matter what you put into the heart/lung area of a deer, you have a dead deer. I prefer an exit wound for an easier tracking job.
DannoBoone1
Re: Precision Rifle bullets Are you sure you don't have two more dead deer out there somewhere? The last time I "assumed" a miss, I went ahead and shot another deer. Something told me later to go check the trail the "missed" deer took. It had gone 50 yards and died. However, she had not acted as though hit right after taking a hit from a .45 195gr Sierra HP. I have shot several deer with the 200gr DC. The only non pass-through shot was one hit length-wise into the deer (recovered bullet had mushroomed perfectly). Last year, I shot a small doe with the .40 235gr QT, and it DID pass through -- she dropped in her tracks. Since no two field situations are identical, bullets do not ALWAYS do as designed - but a good bullet along with a well-placed shot will rarely let ya down! No pure lead saboted bullet is "designed" for it. They are quite lethal bullets however.
