NYBUCK'S 2006 6-POINT

Sunday October 15th AM -

Decided to go to a stand where I always used the climber, but this year I put a baby grand lock-on in the tree. This is a nice spot where I have killed a couple bucks and it is in the middle of some real nice hardwoods. I got to the stand about 6:45. It was still real dark and foggy, it rained all night. At about 8:20 I saw my first deer. I could tell it was a buck, a small one and he was heading away from me. I decided to play with him. I hit the grunt tube a couple times but he didn't care. I reached in my pocket and pulled out the can and flipped it over a couple times and he turned right around and came in. 20 yards perfect but I let him walk. Only a four point. About 10 minutes later I heard something and turned around to see another buck coming right at me. By the time I got ready he was 5 yds from the base of my tree. I grabbed the bow and thought about taking him but he was a small 6 and decided to let him grow. He walked off, made a rub and I agained played with him with the can. I don't think he was intersted but I think the can may have brought in the next buck. He came from the opposite way and when I first saw him I could see he was a bigger deer. I grabbed the bow and got ready. I had a huge shooting lane at 25 yds about 8 feet wide. But he looked my way and I couldn't draw. He started moving again and my next lane was only about 2 feet wide and 20 yds away. I drew back and when he stepped into the opening I let the axis 400 with the 100 grain muzzy fly. As I released and watched, I saw the arrow hit a small branch and watched in horror as the arrow hit the deer back from where I wanted. He jumped about 4 times and then just started walking off a little haunched up. I knew I had gut shot him and felt sick to my stomach. I watched him walk away from me and stand for 10 minutes not offering a second shot. Then he laid down and I thought maybe he was hit better than I thought. I watched him for over an hour 50 yds away and was completely helpless and sick. He then got up and started walking toward me. I thought ok here we go. But he stopped after only 5 yds and layed down looking right at me. Luckily there was enough cover from the leaves that he couldn't see me. It is now 10:45. He layed there for 2 1/2 hours. Meanwhile, I am trying to stay motionless as possible. Now at this point the coffee is kicking in real bad and I have to pee like you wouldn't believe. I fight it for another 1/2 hour and he gets up. I thought maybe he would come closer but he takes one step and lays back down, but this time he is facing away from me almost broadside. I figure here is my chance, to relieve myself, so I do watching him the whole time. I sit and watch him for another 1/2 hour and now I am starting to get real cold. I start to shake and know I have to do something. I tie my bow to the string and attatch my arrow quiver and slowly let it down. I sneak around the tree and try and get down as slowly and quietly as possible. My stand squeaks and I get nevous. The last thing I want is to jump this deer out of his bed. I finally make it down and now must decide what to do. Do I sneak out of there or try and put on a stalk. It is about 2 pm right now and it has been 5 hours since I first shot the deer. I am cold and my legs are weak and I am drained, mentally. But somewhere this inner voice said finish this and put this boy out of his misery. I decide to stalk. It takes me 45 minutes to walk 25 yds one small step at a time. And don't you know it, the wind that had been blowing all morning stopped and you could have heard a mouse toot. Never the less, slowly I make it to 30 yds. He is quartering away slightly and I say it is now or never. I adjust my sight to 30 and tell myself I have to end this. The shot has to be perfect. I slowly draw back and settle the pin behind the shoulder. I shoot and know its good, he jumps up and runs right at me and drops 10 yds away. I just dropped to my knees and sighed. He is not the biggest racked buck I have ever shot but definately was one of the hardest and most satisfying.

Finally back to my brother-in-laws house at 3:30. I decide to take him to enter him in a local contest. I get up there and we throw him on the scale. I knew he was big, figured around 170 lbs but when they had to add more weight I knew he was bigger. Dressed out, he tipped the scales at 197 LBS. He is only a 6 point but he has a 16 3/4 in spread and a hoss of body for our area.

What a day, what a week-end. In total, I saw 7 bucks and no does. I do think this was the same buck that I saw the evening before from the other stand.
