30 - 30 ??

I'm just curious, who here hunts with a 30.30?

My dad has given up hunting, so he gave me & my brothers his guns.

One gun I got is a Marlin 30.30. My dad never shot a deer with it.

I decided to put away the A-bolt & use it this year.

I put a Baush & Laumb 1.5 x 6 scope on it & it really shoots well out to 150 yards.

I can't wait to hunt with it this year.

Re: 30 - 30 ??

I think more deer have been killed with a .30 30 than any other cartridge. I have killed a few deer with a .30 30 without any negative results. Everyone i shot dropped in their tracks, and i have shot a few with my 06 and had them run like i never touched them, every caliber has their positives and negatives, use whatever you feel comfortable with...Thats why there are so many calibers, lots of choices to make everyone happy

if its legal, then it'll kill a deer. my dad hunts with one and loves it...he hasnt missed one in about 10 years and only had 2 not fall in their tracks. try it and see if you like it or not. its all about preference, and you cant know if you like it till you try it.

Bottom Rifle...Marlin 336A

This is my 5th...

Though I've sold the others I have never had one give me a single problem!!!

My favorite thing about them is they are light.

Like any other rifle or bow for that matter....practice with them enough to know what Your Effective range is with them. Not what the rifle is capable of...but what you are capable of with it and Hunt Ethically wink.gif

I use my winchester model 94 only when hunting in fairly thick woods. Otherwise I use the ol' trusty 30-06.

I wouldn't shoot at a deer past 100 yards with a .30-30.

I know I know there are die hard .30-30 fans here. I don't care. I've seen the results first hand.

I have shot many deer over 100 yards with my old 30-30, and never had a problem. But then again, i am pretty accurate with it. Those are the results i have seen first hand. grin.gif

Re: 30 - 30 ??

Yep, haven't used mine for a few years, but that's all I ever used in my younger days. Like others have said, it's a close range rifle. 100 - 125 yrds max for me. wink.gif

If you want to reach out and touch something further, I'd suggest stepping up. A 30/30 is a great bush rifle.

Re: 30 - 30 ??

I have a Win 30-30 that is a shooter. I mean a real shooter. Taking 200 yd shots is a breeze. I shoot subs with mine and not sandwiches either. LMBO

Longest kill was 230 yds. The 170 gr Win CXP2 stopped just under the hide on the other side of the whitetail. She took two steps and dropped. Never lifting her head again. I've never had a deer shot with my 30-30 run any farther than 50 yds or so. Isn't that dead enough? LOL

This year I'm not hunting with mine but I am offering it to my father-in-law to hunt with due to him not owning a rifle. It will give him the extra range that he might need over his shotgun.

Bullet selection and shot placement is everything.

Re: 30 - 30 ??

I use a 30-30 for deer hunting and also black bear. Got my last 5 bear with it and they dropped on the spot. Got over 30 deer with it also and a few were over 100 yards. Would not use any other gun but this one. Just be sure of your shot placement and the way the animal is standing. My brother on the other hand can,t stand 30-30s and lost many deer with his before changing to a larger caliber. confused.gif

LOL...has nothing to do with the caliber! wink.gif

No, but a bigger caliber can send a bigger shock wave.

I guess some guys need the extra help. LMBO tongue.gif

Re: 30 - 30 ??

I have hunted the last few seasons with my Marlin 336C .30-30. I have yet to harvest an animal with it, but it shoots very well at the range. This season I have switched to the Hornady Lever-evolution ammo. It is a 160gr Pointed Rubber tipped bullet. I sighted in 2 in. high at 100yards and she falls in at 1 inch low at 200yards. At 200 I can put 5 shots in a 3 inch orange dot. In the promo video Hornady has a guy shot a Muley at 309yards with the ammo and the deer dropped in his tracks.

Here is the link for the ammo: http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=198

Re: 30 - 30 ??

NJ is absolutely correct!!!!!!!!! I tried the Lever Revolution bullets for the first this year and they are simply awesome!!!

I have carried my little sweetheart every since I moved to rifle country. I have thought about buying newer and fancier rifles but I get the same answer everytime..... "why?"

Me and my sweetheart
