Missed160
I'm just curious, who here hunts with a 30.30? My dad has given up hunting, so he gave me & my brothers his guns. One gun I got is a Marlin 30.30. My dad never shot a deer with it. I decided to put away the A-bolt & use it this year. I put a Baush & Laumb 1.5 x 6 scope on it & it really shoots well out to 150 yards. I can't wait to hunt with it this year.
OJR
Re: 30 - 30 ?? Used one 55 years ago and haven't used one since! I shot a small buck with it!
Stinger-Hunter
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I use my winchester model 94 only when hunting in fairly thick woods. Otherwise I use the ol' trusty 30-06. I wouldn't shoot at a deer past 100 yards with a .30-30. I know I know there are die hard .30-30 fans here. I don't care. I've seen the results first hand. wtnhunt
Re: 30 - 30 ?? Have shot a 30 30, but dont own one and have never hunted with one. Supposed to make great brush guns for deer. A lot of deer have fallen to a 30 30, but I personally prefer my .270.
shockwave
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I think more deer have been killed with a .30 30 than any other cartridge. I have killed a few deer with a .30 30 without any negative results. Everyone i shot dropped in their tracks, and i have shot a few with my 06 and had them run like i never touched them, every caliber has their positives and negatives, use whatever you feel comfortable with...Thats why there are so many calibers, lots of choices to make everyone happy
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I have killed many with one back in my youth, but it's certainly not my first choice today. Keep your shots close and do your part and the gun will get you a deer. Good luck.
Guest hoytcrazy
Re: 30 - 30 ?? if its legal, then it'll kill a deer. my dad hunts with one and loves it...he hasnt missed one in about 10 years and only had 2 not fall in their tracks. try it and see if you like it or not. its all about preference, and you cant know if you like it till you try it. WIwhitetailhunter
Re: 30 - 30 ?? First deer gun I bought was a 30-30. I've shot a few deer with it. My oldest daughter used it her first year out and shot a deer with it.
GWSmith
Re: 30 - 30 ?? Bottom Rifle...Marlin 336A This is my 5th... Though I've sold the others I have never had one give me a single problem!!! My favorite thing about them is they are light. Like any other rifle or bow for that matter....practice with them enough to know what Your Effective range is with them. Not what the rifle is capable of...but what you are capable of with it and Hunt Ethically
buckbuster11
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I hunt in pretty thick stuff where shots over 100 yards are extremely rare, and I use a .30-30. I've probably killed in the neighborhood of 10-15 deer with that gun over the years. Wouldnt trade it in for anything.
ODH
Re: 30 - 30 ?? nope, never used one. The seem like good guns though, but I'll stick using my .270 Win. when I go to PA.
VTbowman
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I shot my 2nd buck with one manynyears ago. I had borrowed it and shot it only a few time to check the scope and then once at my deer at about 80 yards. Did the job IMHO. I prefer other calibers but that will kill deer dead. Tom2008
Re: 30 - 30 ?? Yep I have a Marlin 30-30 Winchester also. I have shot all 3 of my deer with it. By far my most favorite gun to shoot too! Great accuracy on it too. My shots always go where they are supposed too! The farthest I have had a deer go is 10 yards or none at all. unioncountyslayer
Re: 30 - 30 ?? 30-30 is a great rifle to start hunting with. Especially if your not sure if hunting is going to be for you or not and you have one to use. Shot my first buck with a 30-30 and it hooked me. Now I shoot a 7MM and a .270. Good luck this year! buckee
Re: 30 - 30 ?? Yep, haven't used mine for a few years, but that's all I ever used in my younger days. Like others have said, it's a close range rifle. 100 - 125 yrds max for me. If you want to reach out and touch something further, I'd suggest stepping up. A 30/30 is a great bush rifle. Guest HaDeRonDa
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I have a Win 30-30 that is a shooter. I mean a real shooter. Taking 200 yd shots is a breeze. I shoot subs with mine and not sandwiches either. LMBO Longest kill was 230 yds. The 170 gr Win CXP2 stopped just under the hide on the other side of the whitetail. She took two steps and dropped. Never lifting her head again. I've never had a deer shot with my 30-30 run any farther than 50 yds or so. Isn't that dead enough? LOL This year I'm not hunting with mine but I am offering it to my father-in-law to hunt with due to him not owning a rifle. It will give him the extra range that he might need over his shotgun. Bullet selection and shot placement is everything.
HitRmisS
Re: 30 - 30 ?? never shot a deer with one, but i did carry one in tractors and trucks when i worked on a cattle ranch and rolled up a few hogs with them
doughboy1956
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I use a 30-30 for deer hunting and also black bear. Got my last 5 bear with it and they dropped on the spot. Got over 30 deer with it also and a few were over 100 yards. Would not use any other gun but this one. Just be sure of your shot placement and the way the animal is standing. My brother on the other hand can,t stand 30-30s and lost many deer with his before changing to a larger caliber.

njbowhntr
Re: 30 - 30 ?? I have hunted the last few seasons with my Marlin 336C .30-30. I have yet to harvest an animal with it, but it shoots very well at the range. This season I have switched to the Hornady Lever-evolution ammo. It is a 160gr Pointed Rubber tipped bullet. I sighted in 2 in. high at 100yards and she falls in at 1 inch low at 200yards. At 200 I can put 5 shots in a 3 inch orange dot. In the promo video Hornady has a guy shot a Muley at 309yards with the ammo and the deer dropped in his tracks. Here is the link for the ammo: http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=
RangerClay
Re: 30 - 30 ?? NJ is absolutely correct!!!!!!!!! I tried the Lever Revolution bullets for the first this year and they are simply awesome!!! I have carried my little sweetheart every since I moved to rifle country. I have thought about buying newer and fancier rifles but I get the same answer everytime..... "why?" Me and my sweetheart

[/ QUOTE ] I do - my Win 94 30-30 has killed many deer. Practice and you'll do the same. It likes the Federal Premium 150 grain bullets - they expand well and do a good job on whitetails. Good Luck!
